NHK STRL will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2020. Over the years, it has been contributing to the progress and devel-opment of a variety of broadcast technologies, including HDTV, satellite broadcasting, and UHDTV. For three years from FY2018 to 2020, we are conducting R&D to create new broadcast technologies and services under the three main themes of “reality imaging,” “connected media,” and “smart production,” looking toward 2030 to 2040.
Find out more about our R&D plan at https://www.nhk.or.jp/strl/pdf/3kanen_e.pdf
The NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories (NHK STRL) is the sole research facility in Japan specializing in broadcasting technology, and as part of the public broadcaster, its role is to lead Japan in developing new broadcasting technology and contributing to a rich broadcasting culture.

Media Technologies Around 2030-2040 Envisioned by STRLBy around 2030 to 2040, we expect that we will be able to enjoy a wide variety of content using various formats, includ-
ing three-dimensional (3D) TV, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), along with the familiar two-dimensional (2D) video content in conventional TVs. We are conducting R&D on future media technology—Diverse Vision—which can cater to many different viewing styles.
Future media technology that extends the presentation dimensions
Until now, TV broadcasting has evolved in the twin directions of higher quality and higher functionality of 2D video services. Diverse Vision is a future me-dia technology that expands the borders of evolution through technologies such as 3D TV, AR and VR, to provide services extending the presentation dimen-sions.
New, convenient and delightful media experience
Diverse Vision provides new, convenient and delightful media experience. Experience a world that you have never yet seen
Example: The sensation of being in a place you have never been with high definition VR images Deepen bonds
Example: Virtually sharing space with TV performers and faraway people with AR or 3D TV Security, peace of mind, and trust
Example: Get timely and reliable information that you need from wearable devices.

R&D toward this goal
Along with 2D video content, we are conducting R&D on stu-dio technologies for producing a wide variety of content for 3D TV, AR and VR, transmission technologies for delivering this content to a variety of devices, and component technologies for display devices, etc., for making various viewing styles possible.
