Paul & Joyce Baird

Paul and Joyce Baird have volunteered for NHFP almost 2 years. When they go to the site, the dogs get so excited because they know that Paul will walk them and afterwards they will get a treat from Joyce's apron. They have a daughter Andrea and a son named Jeremy and one grandson, Brendan. Joyce also spends a lot of time volunteering at the Fort Polk Thrift Shop in Leesville. Congratulations Paul and Joyce and thanks for your service!

Holiday Safety Tips Poisonous Plants

We all like making our homes more festive for the holidays. We enjoy the green foliage and colorful flowers of plants. Unfortunately, many of the plants we have in our homes during the holidays can be poisonous to pets. If ingested, holly (leaves and berries) causes stomach upset and can be potentially fatal to both dogs and cats. Mistletoe upsets stomachs and can cause heart collapse, while hibiscus may cause diarrhea. Poinsettias have an irritating sap that can cause blistering in the mouth and stomach upset. So when you brighten up your home, place these plants well out of your dog's reach, or use imitation holiday plants.

Decorations and Wrappings

All that glitters is not gold – it could be dangerous for your pet. Ribbons, yarn, and string can cause intestinal obstruction and bunching of the intestine along the length of the string. These conditions require surgery and can be fatal. Ribbons around your dog's neck may be cute, but

they can also be dangerous. Adhesives and glues can be toxic and are often attractive to animals. Potpourri contains oils that can be toxic to dogs if eaten. We may not think of eating it, but some curious pets may. Candles can cause burns and fires. Never leave lighted candles unattended or within reach of your pet. Few things are more tempting to a playful dog than a game of tug. This is not a good game, however, to play with the end of a tablecloth. Try to keep items such as tablecloths, table runners, etc., from hanging too low to the floor, and tempting happy dogs running by to grab an end and pull!

Gifts Under the Tree

Rawhide or other edible items left under the tree can be very tempting, and remember that companies (even Drs. Foster & Smith!) often package rawhide or other pet gifts wrapped in

ribbon. Make sure to remove ribbons or ties before you present gifts to your dog. If played with and swallowed, yarn, ribbon, or string on gifts can cause intestinal obstruction, requiring surgery. Perfumes and after-shaves contain ethanol (alcohol) and perfume also contains essential oils which can be very toxic to dogs if ingested. Batteries for toys or other gifts can be toxic and cause intestinal obstruction. Keep in a safe place until they are ready to be inserted in the gift.

From the directors desk... Wishing all of our dedicated volunteers a happy holiday. Natchitoches Hope for Paws

has finished 2012 with another remarkable year of rescues and adoptions. And most

importantly we have increased our spay and neuter numbers over the last year! Our

next fundraiser is our annual January Rummage Sale. We will need all hands on deck for this

project. As 2012 comes to an end, we thank all of our supporters who have given time and money to

our organization. Our rescues depend on your kind and generous contributions. Wishing each of you a

ADOPTABLE DOG OF THE MONTH: HUDSON

Natchitoches Hope for Paws Annual Rummage Sale is

approaching! Clean out and start fresh with 2013 and let

us take the rummage off your hands! We will accept

furniture, household items, baby clothes, shoes, purses,

books, toys, kitchen and all working electrical items,

tools, lawn equipment etc. All proceeds will go towards

the daily care of our rescues! If you need help hauling,

give us a call at 318-332-2969.

Hudson was found on 3rd Street. He was roaming around for about a week and taken in by employees of the Rick Hudson Agency. He is a small boy, under 20 lbs. Everyone is guessing about his breed. He looks like a Border Collie mix or Australian Shepherd mix with one blue eye and long hair, but he is very small. One Vet said he may even be a Papillon mix. He is about 7 months old, up to date on all vaccinations. He is neutered. He is Heartworm negative. He has a great personality! Wants to be petted. Very playful with people and other dogs. He has been taken to work by a volunteer so he is very social.

Buddy’s Grocery Helps Raise Funds for Charities

Buddy’s Grocery on Hwy. 504 in Oak Grove is raffling three prize packages to benefit D.O.V.E.S. and Hope for Paws.

The money raised will be split between the two organizations. Tickets for each prize are $2.00. The prize packages

are a crawfish boil pot, fishing prize and tailgate party prize. The drawing will be at noon on December 24th. There is

no limit to the number of tickets that someone can purchase and you need not be present to win.

The crawfish boil pot package contains a table

cloth, set of roasting rods, flavored peanuts,

bourbon flavored pecan pralines, a six-pack of

international beers, two free inspections at

Smith’s garage, and LED light set, jaw harp,

S’mores fixins, S’mores roaster, hot sauce,

stapler, two Buddy’s hats, two Buddy’s t-shirts

and a pocket knife.

The fishing prize package is a basket

containing a fish finder, shiner bucket

with tackle, two rods and reels, socket

set, kazoo, tackle box full of tackle, table-

cloth, Slim Jim’s, Zapp’s potato chips and

two Buddy’s t-shirts.

The tailgate package consists of two

Dr. Pepper coolers, a Dr. Pepper grill,

an LSU table with carrying case and a

fold up chair.
