Members of the Igbos tribe of Nige-ria who live in Southern Connecticut at-tended their annual picnic at Wharton Brook State Park in North Haven Aug. 9. They grilled corn, ate fresh coconut and the kids played soccer.

When a reporter queried adults about the threat of the ebola virus in their home country, they were concerned but not alarmed.

Mark Anaeto, a Bridgeport resident who works as an analyst for the city, has a brother and sister in Nigeria. “I called them and everyone’s okay,” he said. “They’re being careful about what they eat and where they go.”

Joseph Anyafulu, who also lives in Bridgeport, said, “Everyone’s careful and the problem is not as rampant as it is in other countries.”

The virus has spread through Sierra Le-one, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria, where at least 1,779 people have contracted the virus. Nigerian president Goodluck Jon-athan has approved more than 1.9 billion naira (£6.6 million) to fight the disease.

Anselm Anyoha, a pediatrician who lives in Sandy Hook, said the Igbo tribe lives in eastern Nigeria and the ebola vi-rus may be prevalent in southwest Nige-ria near Lagos.

Polycarp Okeke, who lives in Hamden and has a brother in Nigeria, said, “It’s not a threat in Nigeria. People are more worried about poverty and security.”

North Haven’s high rank-ing among towns throughout America may receive a boost now that consumer advo-cacy site NerdWallet ranked it among the top 10 towns in Con-necticut for homeownership.

Drawing from U.S. census data over a five-year period, through 2012, North Haven boasted a high ownership rate of 84.9 percent.

The median home value of a North Haven home is $311,600,

which exceeds the value of other top 10 Connecticut towns, including Glastonbury and Simsbury.

North Haven monthly home-owner costs, which include utilities and mortgage are $2,271, and monthly household income is $6,924.

The ranking follows North Haven’s citation as the 86th best place to live in the entire United States by Money Mag-azine based on the town’s top notch schools, safe streets, economic strength and things to do.

North Haven animal control officer Dave Carney has seen it all. From rabid bats flying in homeowner attics to wild-life hit by cars, Carney and his staff are on call 24 hours a day to handle any kind of animal emergency.

He said rabies has been bad this year but isn’t sure why. “It’s like the stock market, no one is in control of it,” he said.

But he warned pet owners to get ra-bies shots for dogs and cats. “It’s the law and it will save you heartache. If your animal tangles with an animal that tests positive you have two options. You can euthanize the animal or put it in quar-antine for six months,” he said.

Milling and paving of North Haven roads will be completed for this year on Aug. 15. Tilcon Connecticut, the state contractor for pav-ing services, worked 7 a.m.

to 5 p.m. shifts on town roads for the past few weeks and paved 17 roads and 4.25 miles of roadway.

Evelyn Fracasso, a Moun-tain Valley Terrace resident, looked on Aug. 7 as the Til-con crew paved in front of her home. Fracasso has lived on Mountain View Terrace for 53 years and said this is the first repaving that has been done in 20 years. “They patched up the road a bit af-ter the two big storms, but there were holes in the road and it was bumpy. I want an even ride,” she said. She spoke with a member of the crew about the way the new pavement connected to her driveway. “I’m pleased the way they smoothed it out,” she said.

The town paid approxi-mately $131,000 for milling and $750,000 for paving, the money coming from the $4.2 million bond that was autho-rized by residents in 2012 and ran out in August.

“We have 44 more miles

of road to be done and it will require another bonding package that I’ll present to residents next spring,” First Selectman Mike Freda said.

Freda said North Haven’s AAA bond rating will ease the debt burden. “We can borrow at record low rates. Seventy-three percent of our debt will be retired within 10 years. There’s an escala-tion of debt with the middle school but we are retiring debt with higher rates and replacing it with lower inter-est rates.”

This year’s paving has been completed on Beach Street Extension, North Frontage Road, Fallon Drive, Hilltop Terrace, Kent Drive, Lance-lot Drive, Lenora Avenue, Moulthrop Street, Ridge-wood Avenue, Rustic Lane, Salem Road, Meadowbrook Road, Mountain View Ter-race, Short Hill Road, Van Rose Drive, Westview Road, Windsor Road and the rail-road crossing adjacent to Mill Road ACES School.

Connecticut Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumen-thal and Rep. Rosa DeLauro appeared at KTT Enterprises in Hamden on Aug. 5 to ap-plaud its owner, Nancy Cof-

fey, for winning a contract to provide latex foam for seats in the House of Representatives.

Coffey said the company’s latex will be used on the seat cushions on 480 seats in the House, including the seats, seat backs and arms. “They are a comfortable surface

made from high end materi-als,” she said.

When asked how she got the contract, she said, “The House buys American prod-ucts and it’s a woman-owned business, so they gave us the purchase order. It’s one of the biggest orders we’ve ever

had.”The contract, won by a fe-

Square Foot Theatre per-formances of “Les Misera-bles”, the musical based on the novel by the French poet and novelist Victor Hugo, be-gan Tuesday at Congregation Mishkan Israel in Hamden and continue this weekend with performances Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.

Square Foot Theater moved to Wallingford last year, from North Haven, where it operated a studio on Broadway for nine years. Les Miz is the biggest production the company ever produced, with a cast of 75 and 15 mu-sicians, according to one of the directors, Jared Aaron Brown.

North Haven resident Joey Abate, a junior at the Coop-erative Arts and Humanities High School in New Haven, plays the bishop.

“A 16-year-old plays the bishop, which is normally played by an older man,” said Marissa Gandelman, another director. “The wisdom that comes from a younger bishop moved us to tears.”

Abate said he began acting in 2009 and has performed in 35 Square Foot Theater shows. “I was recently intro-duced to Les Miz,” he said. “I love the character and how the story relies on an en-semble that comes together to make a really awesome performance.”

The ensemble cast features actors from five to 70 years old. “It’s a community theater and we find places for every-body,” Brown said. “No one is turned away.”

“It’s a family affair,” said Dennis Richardson, from Wallingford, who performs alongside his wife, Kristen and 17-year-old daughter Maggie. “My daughter has been in shows before and she said, ‘Dad, you’ve got to do this,’” he said.

Steve Belli, who plays the lead, Jean Valjean, performs with his son, Steve Belli, Jr. “I started in ’84 with the U.S. Air Force, singing and per-forming with them,” the el-der Belli said.

The family affair isn’t lim-ited to the cast. Costume de-signers Lisa Rebeschi and Jutta Klomburg have chil-dren performing. “We’ve been building costumes for the past month and want them to look like the period. We’ve done a lot of dying and staining,” Rebeschi said.

The cast began rehearsing in mid-June and moved to Mishkan Israel on July 28.

Tickets for the weekend performances are $15 for adults and $12 for children and seniors. They are avail-able at the door. Congrega-tion Mishkan Israel is located at 785 Ridge Road, Hamden.

businesses more opportuni-ties to win federal contracts.

The Senate bill will pro-vide sole source authority to provide parity with other small business contracting programs for women-owned businesses.

The legislation follows the Women’s Equity in Con-tracting Act of 2000 and the Women Owned Small Busi-ness procurement program in 2011 that have sought to level the playing field for wom-en-owned businesses but have failed to meet the goal of awarding 5 percent of con-tracts to WOSBs.

WOSBs have received only $237 million in federal con-tracts since 2011, 0.01 percent of the $1.7 trillion that has been awarded government wide.

The meeting in Hamden, held to support the legisla-tion, was sponsored by the Women’s Business Devel-opment Council, which pro-vides workshops and training programs to support women entrepreneurs.

Fran Pastore, president/CEO or WBDC, said she met with Murphy and Blumenthal and asked them to co-spon-sor the bill that was intro-duced by Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA).

“Both senators signed and Rosa is working on a similar bill in the House,” she said.

Murphy, who joked, “It’s sad I moved over to the Sen-ate, because now I won’t be

able to enjoy the seats you provided,” said the legisla-tion will help erase the bar-rier to federal contracts and make sure women-owned businesses get them.

Blumenthal, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said small con-tracts for the defense de-partment go for hundreds of millions of dollars and it’s possible to award them to companies owned by women.

The legislation would lead

to job creation that will assist women, men and veterans be-cause small businesses are leading job creators, he said.

DeLauro said she is work-ing on a counterpart bill in the House. “We will harmo-nize it with the Senate so we’re all speaking from the same page,” she said. “It’s not about women. It’s not about men. It’s about economic growth. An equitable partner-ship is needed or this econ-omy won’t grow.”

Animal

The animal shelter on Uni-versal Drive holds stray dogs and cats. “We hold them for seven days to give owners the chance to come forward,” Carney said.

Carney said North Haven had a dog warden before he was named animal control officer 21 years ago. “Once ra-bies came in it was changed and now we deal with wild-life. You never know what you’re going to come across.”

When asked whether North Haven residents have unusual pets, he said, “You don’t know what they have behind their doors but we don’t see anything unusual.”

The wildlife Carney nor-mally deals with are rac-

coons, possums, woodchucks and fisher weasels.

“It’s a busy job. You never know what you’ll come across every day. It’s an adventure.”

If residents encounter an animal emergency with their

own pets or outside animals, call the animal control office immediately or the police department.

“If you think it’s an emer-gency it doesn’t hurt to call. We can handle it right away,” Carney said.

The Town of North Ha-ven, due to reconstruction improvements, plans for full closure of the Spring Road Bridge over the Muddy River in late August, according to First Selectman Michael J. Freda.

The Spring Road Bridge is located between Potter and Mill Roads and will be closed to accommodate reconstruc-tion efforts.

A bid opening was held at the Town’s Department of Fi-nance for the reconstruction of the Spring Road Bridge in

March. Dewberry Engineers of New Haven worked closely with the State of Connecticut Department of Transporta-tion to secure the necessary permits and design approvals related to the project.

The project was awarded to Nagy Brothers Construc-tion of Monroe for $393,507, which is less than the original estimated price of $600,000. Materials have been ordered and construction is expected to commence during the week of Aug. 25. The bridge will remain closed for up to

four months. Total reimburs-able costs by the DOT will be approximately 30 percent.

North Haven school buses will be re-routed and appro-priate detours and signage will be provided.

For more information, con-tact the Department of Public Works’ Engineering Depart-ment at (203) 239-5321, ext. 430.

“For three years we ap-plied for a grant, and this year we received it,” Sado-sky said. “The work is state-funded and there will be no town match.”

Capital Studio, an East Hartford architectural firm, will design the site and it will be put out for bid after the design is completed. Sadosky said the work should be com-pleted by next spring.

Published every Friday by the Record-Journal Publishing Co. Delivered by mail to all homes and businesses in North Haven.

In the second part of this se-ries reporter Charles Kreutz-kamp visits towns served by Record-Journal Weeklies to search for Geocaches. SPOILER ALERT: specific details ahead. For last week’s story, visit http://tinyurl.com/RJCache1.

North Haven holds a spe-cial place for me – my first as-signments as a reporter were

for The North Haven Citi-zen – so I was eager to re-turn to search for caches.

The same day we vis-ited North Haven, a new Geocache was published ti-

tled “Beat the Heat – Lolli-pop” on a residential front lawn. This cache, a “park and grab” or “P&G” (Geocachers seem to love their abbrevia-tions) was found by three peo-ple the same day it went live. This cache was praised by its seekers, and sounded like a fun find.

Meanwhile, HisGirlFriday and Your Friendly Neighbor-hood Reporter (the Geocach-ing names of this reporter and his fiancée, Kate) were driving in circles, failing to find “mi-cro” sized caches, and walking into poison ivy.

If there’s one thing we learned this week, it’s that preparation is key: When we head out for next week’s col-umn, we’ll be sure to plan which caches to seek in ad-vance, with plenty of time to consider difficulty and route. One limitation of the free Geocaching app is that it only shows caches near you, but the website has no such limitations.

After our failed attempt at a micro near the center of town, we scoped out North Haven for a good hiking trail. That is what brought us to the lovely Quinnipiac River State Park – eventually. When we first asked the GPS to bring us to the park, it instructed us to

drive up 15. We complied, and a couple miles out of North Haven and nowhere near any sort of legal parking, the phone proudly declared, “You have arrived.”

After turning around in Wallingford, we finally found our way to the trailhead using good old-fashioned map-read-ing. The trailhead, as it turns out, is nestled behind a rest stop right off of 15. As Geo-cacher ctvalleygirl put it, “Who knew there’s a trail (paved no less) in the back of the rest stop?”

We quickly set off to start finding caches. The first one we went for gave us an excel-lent hint: we would find the cache hidden “in the crotch of

a three-trunk tree.”Once our GPS made clear

that the cache laid off the trail and into the underbrush, I found myself hesitating, try-

ing to call to mind an image of a specific leaf.

I should have thought to

Thomas Foley won the Republican primary for governor Tuesday and will face Democratic gov-ernor Dannel Malloy in a November rematch, but North Haven Republicans favored John McKinney, who received 359 votes to Foley’s 269.

Tuesday’s voting, which took place in all five dis-tricts at the Recreation Center and the four ele-mentary schools, saw 629 registered voters, includ-ing 14 absentees, take part. At the end of the day, 17.4 percent of the town’s 3,608 registered Republicans had voted.

Foley, a Greenwich

businessman and former ambassador to Ireland, de-feated McKinney, the State Senate minority leader, with 56 percent of the vote to McKinney’s 44 percent state wide.

In the lieutenant gov-ernor’s race, three candi-dates vied to join Foley on the GOP ticket in No-vember, but, at press time, the race was too close to call. Heather Somers had a slight lead over state Rep. Penny Bacchiochi, with David Walker trail-ing them.

In North Haven, Somers received 240 votes to 206 for Walker and 169 for Bacchiochi.

voice my concern before Kate, wearing shorts, walked straight into a patch of poison ivy, which I successfully rec-ognized moments later. Being from Indianapolis, my fiancée had never even seen a poi-son ivy rash in person before, much less the plant.

A quick read of some of the comments on the Geocache might have warned us of the presence of the poison ivy as well – again, preparation was the lesson of the day.

With that ship sailed, we fig-ured we may as well go after our quarry – so we tramped through a sea of the stuff, eyes peeled for a three-trunked tree.

This Geocache is the first

one I spotted before Kate did: several sticks and pieces of bark were piled against a tree, but a tiny bit of green and blue shown through the debris.

With this cache found and the logbook signed, we rushed back to the car and went roar-ing back home. There are con-flicting ideas out there about how long it takes poison ivy to set in – so we kept our fin-gers crossed that we would get home in time.

Unfortunately I must report that my fiancée is now inti-mately familiar with the poi-son ivy rash. We live and learn!

Thanks to our awesome readers for all their excellent advice and kind feedback!

We asked our Facebook fans a back-to-school ques-tion July 28, noting that Day 1 was just one month away. We wanted to know what sorts of trends to expect in our lo-cal towns and asked parents to tell us “What’s involved in getting your student back in the routine?”

Not surprisingly, people baulked at the idea of even considering the specter of summer coming to a close. We explained that as a weekly publication we needed to prepare stories ahead — and school doesn’t start after La-bor Day like in the good old days.

But it was fun to see how fiercely we want to hold onto

those all-too-fleeting lazy days.

However, a couple of folks did weigh in on the process of getting their students school-ready. Read on for the comments, thumbs up and thumbs down.

Thumbs downFan: Stop, some of us are

still doing summer school. Please let us have a summer...

Fan: You just lost all of the

teachers...it is still July!Fan: Too early to talk about

this, lol!!Thumbs up Bedtime routines were the

top concern of those parents who offered advice on re-insi-tuting student readiness.

Fan: Bed times, making their beds (we let bed mak-ing slide in the summer.)

Fan: We slowly push their bedtime back to their school bedtime. A few weeks before school starts, we push bed-time back by 30 minutes at a time (so from 9:30 to 9 one week, then 9 to 8:30 the next week, then 8:30 to 8 the week before school). This way, they aren’tshocked by a sudden change in bedtime.

‘Challenge’ has its flaws, but is making a difference

I was challenged on Sunday.

I can’t lie; I was a little taken aback by it. I can’t re-member the last time I was challenged for anything, in-cluding a one-on-one basket-ball matchup, an epic dance battle, or a rousing game of “Go Fish.”

But I was called out by a close friend to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge (IBC), a social media sensa-tion that is spreading across New England and sweeping throughout the country like wildfire.

The concept of the Chal-lenge is simple: you have 24 hours to dump a bucket of ice water on your head. Should you choose to accept this challenge, you douse your-self with the aforementioned ice water. Should you opt to remain warm and dry, you’re supposed to instead donate $100 to a branch of the ALS Association. Upon complet-ing the IBC, the participant is then supposed to nominate

five new individuals to keep the movement going.

This challenge came to fru-ition a few short weeks ago in support of Pete Frates, a for-mer Boston College baseball player who was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) back in 2012.

Since the IBC began, count-less celebrities have taken part, and just about every other post in my Facebook news feed has featured some-one drenching themselves for the cause.

Even Frates’ wife, Julie, has seen the benefits of the challenge begin to unfold. In a recent interview with Sally Holmes of Elle.com, Julie stated that “since Pete was diagnosed, his whole mission has been to spread awareness of the disease.”

They are raising awareness for a horrible disease, which is all well and good. But is the Challenge going about raising awareness the right way?

There are three parts to this trend that don’t quite make sense to me, and ulti-mately bring my list of con-cerns full circle.

First and foremost is the actual awareness the Ice Bucket Challenge is raising. For the common man, ALS may not be the most famil-iar disease in the world, yet certain sports fanbases across the country are already aware of the illness.

Former New York Yankee and baseball great Lou Geh-rig suffered from ALS, and his name is used as a popu-lar nickname for the disease. Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling gar-nered awareness for the dis-ease in 2004 when he wrote “K ALS” on his cleats during the team’s postseason run. Also, former New Orleans

Saints safety Steve Gleason was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, bringing further public-ity to the ailment.

Yet apart from those fan bases, and now the Boston College Eagles family, what do people really know about ALS, and what has the Ice Bucket Challenge taught me directly? Unfortunately, not

much.Video after video, people

say they’re bringing aware-ness to ALS. Based off the Merriam-Webster definition of the word “aware,” it shows they’re not.

“Aware” is defined as “hav-ing or showing realization, perception, or knowledge,” but 95-percent of the videos I’ve seen have only shown me that all anyone accepting the

Challenge

challenge knows about ALS is the name of the disease.

Instead of telling me the name, tell me something I don’t know. Give me a fact or piece of information about the disease prior to soaking yourself.

I want to know who ALS can affect (Answer: everyone).

I want to know what part of the body ALS affects (Nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord, better known by their medical name of “motor neurons.”)

I want to know how many are battling this disease (Roughly 30,000 Americans at any given time, with ap-proximately 5,600 new diag-noses each year.)

Telling somebody some-thing about the illness would seem to increase one’s aware-ness much more than saying “you’re next.”

Which brings me to my next point: the word “or.”

Left or right. North Caro-lina Tar Heels or Duke Blue Devils. Soccer or futbol.

You can’t have both, so clearly you must choose. The same seemingly applies for the Challenge. This word “or” that so many people have at-tached with their videos puts nominees in an odd conun-drum; do you choose to raise awareness or donate to the cause?

Frankly, I’d rather help raise awareness and donate.

So many videos I’ve seen don’t tell me that; it’s one or the other.

There have been a few that have altered the parameters of the Challenge: a smaller donation and ice water or a $100 donation, which I find to be a nice adjustment.

Speaking of the challenge itself, it brings me to my final rebuttal…

The idea of challenging others seems slightly juve-nile to me. I’m not saying that people’s hearts aren’t in the right place. It’s not as though I’m being presented with a college fraternity-type challenge that could have me wind up in a hospital. How-ever, it does seem a bit child-ish to call out your peers in front of others to either soak up or pay up.

I get it. People are taking

part and daring others to try to spread knowledge about ALS, which I respect. Yet, cy-cling back to my first point, how much awareness is actu-ally being raised?

According to www.MyFox-Boston.com, the ALS Associa-tion raised $1.35 million over a two week stretch from Tues-day, July 29 to Monday, Aug. 11. A spokesperson from the orga-nization said they only raised $22,000 in the same time pe-riod last year.

As for answering the chal-lenge myself? I plan to stay dry and make a donation to the ALS Association. Not be-cause I was challenged, but because I choose to help out a good cause.

As for challenging other in-

dividuals, I choose to abstain. Instead, I encourage those reading to do what they feel is right.

Should somebody read what I’ve written and choose to challenge their friends, or donate to the ALSA (or any charity of their choice for that matter), that’s fine by me.

If someone reads what I’ve written and has come away from it more informed about ALS, I feel like I’ve made just as big a difference.

So I encourage you all: Do what you feel is right.

The clock is ticking. Your 24 hours start now.
