By Lynn L. MartinThis very important security caution
piece was sent to me by former Alva res-ident Richard Miller. This has some very good information in avoiding theft.Long Term Parking
Some people left their car in the long-term parking at San Jose while away, and someone broke into the car. Using the in-
formation on the car's registration in the glove compartment, they drove the car to the people's home in Pebble Beach and robbed it. So I guess if we are going to leave the car in long-term parking, we should not leave the registration/insur-ance cards in it, nor the remote garage door opener. This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology.
Lynn Says
Not all thieves are stupidGPS
Someone had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green, which was adjacent to the football stadium and spe-cially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS, which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. Something to con-sider if you have a GPS: don't put your home address in it. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen. (When we’re away from home, sometimes I use the GPS to find out how long it’s going to take to get home. But the “Favorites” list entry isn’t “Home.” It’s “Cal.”)
Cell PhonesI never thought of this. This lady
has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her cell phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet, etc., was stolen. Twenty minutes later when she called her hub-by from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says, “I received
your text asking about our PIN num-ber and I've replied a little while ago.” When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actu-ally used the stolen cell phone to text “hubby” in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.
Moral of the lesson:• Do not disclose the relationship
between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad or Mom.
• When sensitive info is being asked through texts, confirm by calling back.
• When texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet “family and friends” who text you.
Purse in the Grocery Cart ScamA lady went grocery shopping at a
local mall and left her purse sitting in the children's seat of the cart while she reached something off a shelf. Her wal-let was stolen, and she reported it to the store personnel. After returning home, she received a phone call from mall se-curity to say that they had her wallet and that although there was no money in it, it did still hold her personal papers. She immediately went to pick up her wallet, only to be told by mall security that they had not called her. By the time she re-turned home again, her house had been broken into and burglarized. The thieves knew that by calling and saying they were mall security, they could lure her out of her house long enough for them to burglarize it.

By Laura Scott The Waynoka school board held its
regular meeting on Monday evening. All members were present and the meeting began promptly at 7:30 p.m.
The board approved the financial reports. “Gross production was up this month. August is one of the highest we have had,” said Superintendent Loren Tackett. “We just set our budget from what we did last year. We moved money around a little bit. Our payroll and everything is under what we did last year. There is nothing out of line

going into the 2014-15 school year.” All remaining items of the consent agenda were also approved.
In the superintendent’s report, Tackett announced that homecoming this year will be on Friday, Sept. 19. The Waynoka superintendent was excited to share that the district will receive a small rural schools achievement grant. This will be the sixth year for Waynoka to receive this grant. Said Tackett, “It’s one of the best grants. There are not a lot of rules tied to it.”
In other news, health insurance will
Waynoka School Board members, pictured left to right, are Clint Olson, Board Clerk Lori Adair, Andy Ferguson, Mindy Zook, Rick George and Superintendent Loren Tackett
go up in January and the new activity bus has arrived.
Principal Michael Meriwether reported that the new notification system has been used. “We’ve had a lot of parents call just to let us know that they received an email or text. Our parents are really watching grades, late work, detention, and knowing what’s going on at school.”
All members voted in favor to approve the lease agreement of the baseball field from the City of Waynoka for $1,000.
Members also voted to approve the fundraiser requests for the 2014-2015 school year. This year's fundraiser requests are similar to those in past years.
The district has obtained four quotes for purchasing new vehicles. The total cost for two Suburbans and one Malibu is $95,644. All voted in favor of purchasing the new vehicles.
Board members voted to approve the items listed for disposal. The items included a Ford Taurus, Excursion and Suburban. These vehicles will be traded in to purchase the new vehicles.
Motion failed for the school district to adopt a self-evaluation plan.
The next meeting of the Waynoka Board of Education will be held Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

This past week the Timberlake FFA and 4-H competed at the Alfalfa County Fair. Every FFA student out of the 44 students enrolled in agricultural education classes had a project entered at the county fair. Whether they participated in the livestock show, horse show, competed in the livestock judging contest or created a native range board, every FFA member worked hard on their projects to place well at the county level. In the livestock show, the students were tough competitors with their animals. We had many class winners, breed champions, grand champions and even champion showmen.
The Timberlake FFA and 4-H livestock show team results from the Alfalfa County Fair:

By Yvonne MillerIf you love your country, the troops,
veterans, and guns, mark your calendar for November 8 and plan to be in Kiowa, Kan.
If helping wounded warriors and families of fallen American heroes is high on your priority list, you've got to attend this event that raises funds to do just that. Instead of only having tears well in your eyes when you hear individual soldiers moving stories of heroism, this is your opportunity to actually do something to help those brave individuals or at least their families.
The Harriman-Miller Green Beret Organization, Inc., is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that helps the wounded and fallen who were toughest of the tough – the special forces.
Eric Reed is one of those Green Berets who spent nine years in the Army Special Forces. He is a 1997 graduate of South Barber High School in Kiowa and the son of Rory and Gayla Reed. Now a defense contractor, Reed is giving back to his injured and fallen friends by his affiliation with the Harriman-Miller Green Beret Organization which was formed about two years ago in North Carolina.
“I have multiple friends who are missing arms and legs (wounded in combat) and are still going overseas,” Reed said. “You see the sacrifice these people make and you want to help take some of the stress off their plate.”
Reed is organizing the November 8 fundraiser at the Kiowa Community Building, at 7 p.m., that features a brisket dinner and beer for $25 per ticket. A silent

The main auction items include multiple firearms, ammunition and tactical accessories. Reed said some area bakers volunteered to make some of their highly sought baked goods that should bring a handsome price for the auction. Wounded Special Forces Green Beret Makes Rifle
for Event Drawing The most prized
possession of the event will be a “5 Toes” custom .308 rifle. Donations can be made for tickets that will be put in a drawing for that handmade gun. What makes the gun invaluable is its maker.
The rifle is made by SFC John Wayne Walding, a Green Beret and recipient of the Silver Star who served combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. Reed said Walding lost his right leg from the knee down in combat. Watch for a future story in the Newsgram about Walding and the unique story of his opening “5 Toes Custom Gun Shop” in Dallas.
“5 Toes'” mission is to build the finest hand-crafted, custom rifles by employing great Americans that have fought and bled for their country. Employment there is given to the veterans because of their service and sacrifice, as they seek a new direction in life.
Reed said this past Fourth of July Walding was featured on FOX News. Within the year of losing his leg he
competed in the Boston Marathon and placed in his division.
Reed hopes to have Walding and a few other wounded warriors from special forces attend the dinner and auction in Kiowa.

Child abuse prevention semi in Alva WednesdayBy Ladye Hobson
Those interested in stopping child abuse should stop by the Woods County Courthouse on Wednesday, Sept. 17, to visit the “Protect Kids” semi truck and trailer around noon.
Rodney Timms, an author of books describing the abuse he suffered as a child, hopes to meet with local law en-forcement, child advocates and anyone else who is interested in raising aware-ness of this cause.
Timms, now an owner of a nation-wide trucking firm, is making a 77-coun-ty tour in Oklahoma to raise awareness against child abuse.
For the next two weeks, each customer who orders a “helping” of Blue & Gold and DJ’$ products will also be “helping” the Timberlake FFA chapter. Members of Timberlake FFA will be out and about Sept. 15 through Sept. 25 taking orders for Blue & Gold sausage, chicken tenderloin fritters, thick slice bacon and more.
Timberlake FFA is raising money
for its chapter to increase their activity fund. With the money raised the chapter will be able to put the funds towards traveling and expenses to the state FFA convention, classroom, greenhouse and shop projects, and monthly chapter meetings.
To place an order contact a local FFA member, or call 580-852-3281 or send an e-mail to [email protected].
Timberlake FFA to sell Blue & Gold and DJ’$ products to raise funds for chapterProducts may be purchased Sept. 15 through Sept. 25

South Barber homecoming date changed to Oct. 3By Yvonne Miller
Don't plan on attending South Barber High School's (SBHS) football homecoming Friday night. It's not happening as originally scheduled.
The SBHS Chieftains were to host Cunningham for homecoming. However, Cunningham does not have enough kids to play due to injuries, so there will be no game in Kiowa Friday night.
SBHS Principal Brent Shaffer said they've rescheduled the Chieftains' homecoming for Friday, Oct. 3, when SBHS hosts South Haven.
By Yvonne MillerKiowa Mayor Brandon Farney
called the regular September city council meeting to order with all members present including Bill Watson, R.L. Simpson, Russel Molz, Tom Wells and Mark Lambert. Also seated at the council table were: City Administrator Nathan Law, City Attorney Laurel McClellan and City Clerk Marlo Rugg.
The meeting opened with Paul Howard Tilley, resident at 601 Miller, speaking during the public agenda. He set up a camera to film while he spoke to the council. He complained to the council about their inaction regarding a tree that fell on his house, causing damage to the house and also taking out a power line. There's a question as to whether the tree was on city property, in the city right-of-way.
This event happened several years ago, and Tilley expressed his frustration with the response from the city. In fact, he requested the immediate resignation of Law, McClellan and Watson (who is the agent who provides the city insurance.) He gave each councilman a questionnaire to complete and mail back to him.
When Watson called the tree blowing over “an act of God,” Tilley disagreed and called it “an act of gravity.”
McClellan said Tilley's claim will be submitted to the insurance company.
Burn and Trash Days, More City Business
Bi-annual trash days for fall bulk waste pickup were set for Oct. 2 and 9. The fall burn period is set for Nov.
Kiowa City Council sets burn period, bi-annualtrash days, hears complaint
14 to Dec. 14, excluding Thanksgiving weekend.
Last month Watson asked why certain utilities are tied together for billing. Sewer is based on water use. Current ordinance language says multi-family dwellings are based on water consumption and may be prorated based on number of “occupied” units. Occupancy is in that grey area in question. After much discussion, council voted to leave the ordinance as is.
A water use/billing inquiry was brought to council's attention last month. A homeowner had the water to a vacated house turned off and then received a large water bill. The homeowner swears they did not tamper with the meter. The city employee directed to turn the water off said it was done in October. Upon inspection the service valve had clearly been moved, Law said the city employee told him.
Law said the city uses a water leak forgiveness policy, which will be used.
Ordinance No. 417 was approved requiring arborist license insurance. This requires someone trimming trees in the city to pay any damages they might cause.
The council approved Resolution No. 263, which updates fees.
Regarding a water leak at Seventh and Miller streets, the council approved hiring Bill's Repair at a cost of $3,800.
For the fire department, the council approved firefighters to seek out a

$20,000 truck to replace two old trucks. They will offer those trucks to smaller area departments for $1. The cost of the new truck and the expense to bring it to Kiowa will come from the fire department equipment fund and from their budget.
In Law's administrator report, he requested a speed study from KDOT along Fourth Street in front of the new hospital. The speed limit on Fourth Street, which is the highway going south out of Kiowa in front of the new hospital, is 60 mph.
The council will donate the $50 rental fee for the community building in Kiowa for a county-wide firefighter appreciation event, which will be sometime in October.
In council items, Molz said the alley behind his house is constantly blocked and he hears complaints from residents who cannot access their property. Lambert questioned a liability issue when personal equipment is damaged by something owned by the city. Mayor Farney said a broken air conditioning unit at the community building was turned in to insurance.

KiowaFriday, Oct. 10, is the last day to
apply for voter registration in order to be eligible to vote in the Nov. 4 general election, Alfalfa County Election Board Secretary Kelly Stein said today.
Stein said that people who are United States citizens, residents of Oklahoma and at least 18 years old may apply to become registered voters.
Those who have never been registered to vote before or who are not currently registered in the county of their residence and people who are registered but who need to change their registration information may apply by filling out and mailing an Oklahoma voter registration application form in time for it to be postmarked no later than midnight Friday,
Voter registration deadline is Oct. 10
Oct. 10.Stein explained that applications
postmarked after that time still will be accepted and processed; however, the applications will not be approved until after the Nov. 4 general election.
The county election board responds in writing to every person who submits an application for voter registration. The response is either a voter identification card listing the new voter's precinct number and polling place location or a letter that explains the reason or reasons the application for voter registration was not approved. Stein said that anyone who has submitted a voter registration application and who has not received a response within 30 days should contact the county election board office.

When Mike was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage in the Kiowa ER on June 12th, it was with very scared and heavy hearts that our family met him at St. Francis Hospital's Neuro ICU after he was transported there by helicopter. Not knowing what to expect when we arrived, his doctors explained that it was one of the worst hemorrhages they had ever seen, his condition was critical, and prognosis unknown. One of his nurses even told us that it was good to be hopeful, but that we also needed to be realistic. .. and so with God, our friends, and community at our side, we chose to be hopeful.
Our family has pretty much "walked by faith" throughout this journey and we are in awe of how many of you have joined us on that journey through your prayers, donations. cards, support, and words of strength and encouragement. We would especially like to thank everyone who put so much time and effort into the benefit for our family, as well as everyone who attended the event to support Mike. What a beautiful example and living expression of what it truly means to be from a small town. Our little communities are so special, and we are beyond blessed to call South Barber our home.
We cannot begin to express how grateful, humbled, and appreciative we are for the many acts of kindness shown to us over these last few months. After two months of hospitalization and rehab in Wichita, and several weeks of therapy in Hutchinson, Mike continues to improve daily. There is no slowing him down, as many of you have seen! Please accept our sincerest thanks and heartfelt gratitude. God is so good.

100 of the Special Forces Association and 3rd Group Command and staff. Both Walding and Reed were 3rd Special Forces Green Beret soldiers.
The organization provides timely assistance to soldiers and their families in their time of need.
With the help of corporate and individual sponsors, they coordinate Wounded Warrior Hunts, Fishing Expeditions and VIP attendance at sporting events throughout the year across the nation.
Reed said the organization works closely with Gold Star families (those who lost a son or husband), giving immediate financial help and manpower as needed.
“We look at it like a big family,” Reed said. “We like to spread Christmas cheer – help get some gifts under the tree.” They provide turkeys and other food items at Thanksgiving. The group also provides headstones for a special forces group that are displayed in North Carolina.
“We will never forget,” Reed said. One of the heroes for which this
organization is named is Stanley L. Harriman. He received the Silver Star (posthumously). A Chief Warrant Officer Two, Harriman died March 2, 2002 during Operation ANACONDA in Afghanistan in the face of overwhelming odds and direct hostile aggression.. He was honored for his “exceptional courage, dedication to mission and personal sacrifice which directly contributed to his men surviving the battle.”
The organization has a scholarship program in Harriman's name.
The other man whose name is honored by this organization is Staff Sergeant Robert J. Miller who received the Medal of Honor for his service during Operation Enduring Freedom.. He died performing
extraordinary acts of heroism during combat operations against an armed enemy in Konar Province, Afghanistan. A harrowing story tells how his small squad was caught in an ambush. As point man he selflessly called for his men to quickly move back to covered positions. He then charged the enemy, exposing himself to enemy fire to provide protective fire for his team.
Miller's “extraordinary valor ultimately saved the lives of seven members of his own team and 15 Afghanistan National Army soldiers.”
Reed said he and Miller worked across the hall from each other. Of both Miller and Harriman, Reed said, “They were both exemplary guys. You couldn't find someone who didn't love them.”
A typical kid from rural Kansas, Reed said after high school he went to college a while and then welding school. When the September 11 terrorists attacks hit, he was age 22 and signed up a few days after the nightmare. “That's why I went in (to the military),” he said. “I was happy to go. No one made me go – I volunteered.”
He wanted to try out for special operations, and after an assessment course, he made it. “I've traveled all over the Middle East. My primary focus was on Afghanistan,” Reed said. “I did lots of missions. We (special forces) work in small groups.” Sharing no more details of those missions, he said, “In special forces we make it our business to be quiet.”
In his current job as a contractor, Reed travels overseas a few times a year. “My job is not that dangerous now, compared to what I did then.”
Reed hopes to have a big turnout for the Nov. 8 dinner and auction in Kiowa. “When you raise money to help multiple individuals, it disappears fast.”
