Goal of NGSS: Develop standards that will be rich in content and practice, arranged in a coherent manner across

disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally benchmarked science education.

NGSS Conceptual Shifts1. K–12 science education should reflect the interconnected nature of science as it is practiced and experienced in the real world.2. The NGSS are student performance expectations – not curriculum.3. The science concepts in the NGSS build coherently from K through 12.4. The NGSS focus on deeper understanding of content as well as application of content.

5. Science and engineering are integrated in the NGSS, from K–12.6. The NGSS are designed to prepare students for college, career, and citizenship.7. The NGSS and Common Core State Standards (English Language Arts and Mathematics) are aligned.

Less emphasis on: More emphasis on:

Discrete Facts Conceptual understanding with a focus on depth over breadth

Isolated investigation and experimentation process skills

Integration of science and engineering practices with content

Student acquisition of information

Student understanding and use of scientific knowledge within and across science disciplines, and science and engineering practices

Numerous Standards Limited number of disciplinary Core Ideas and Cross-Cutting Concepts that unify the study of science and engineering

Uneven articulation throughout grade levels

Learning progressions that develop K-12

Moving from Current CA standards

to NGSS-CA

Example: Kindergarten ESS-2: Earth’s Systems

Here are the 3 core ideas for Kindergarten students to learn about under Earth Systems.

Reflect: How different are these core ideas to what you have taught in the past? How are they the same?

Cross Cutting Concepts

Cross Cutting Concepts are large, overarching ideas that can be found in all subjects. They are the same in all grades K-12.

1. Patterns2. Cause and Effect3. Scale, Proportion, and Quantity4. Systems/System Models5. Energy and Matter6. Structure and Function7. Stability and Change Click on photo to watch a video

about this dimension.

Crosscutting Concepts:Example: Kindergarten ESS-2: Earth’s Systems

Here are the Cross Cutting Concepts for Earth Systems.

Reflect: What kinds of patterns can be found in Weather and Climate?

How would describe what a “system” is to your grade level in relation to the content?

Science & Engineering Practices

Main Ideas for Practices Section:

How do students come to an understanding?

How will students learn about it?

Practices are the same for everyone in K-12.

1. Go through to see how the same Performance Expectation (Earth Systems) is your grade or how it progresses in different grades. What are your observations?

OR

2. Look at the grade level standards in general. What are your observations?

Implementing the Practice Standards

Using what you know of the Science and Engineering Practices:1. Think of the next unit or lesson that you will teach. What

practices will be addressed?

2. With a group of 2-4, share your lessons.

3. Brainstorm: How can you modify your lessons to integrate more practice standards?

You may want to refer to the “Modifying Labs” and “ Less of this/More of this” handouts.
