Storm and cyclone resistance glass has beendesigned and tested to reduce the devastating
eects o extreme winds and ying debris that
impact upon people and buildings. Ordinary
glass & window rames can ail under these
extreme wind pressures and airborne projectiles.
It must be noted that this glass may still break
upon impact, but will prevent penetration o an
object into the building. The glass should be an
integral part o the raming system designed to
prevent the rame and glass rom blowing in orout when impacted.
Security glazing can be broadly defned as
products and systems designed to protect
people and property. Security glazing in the
case o criminal actions should be considered
as just one component in the overall security
system. Factors aecting which level o security
glazing to choose include police response time,
protection o people, protection o goods andthe availability o other orms o security such
as alarms and electronic surveillance.

cyclone/storm resistantglass
A range o products are now available that have been tested
to withstand extreme wind pressures and penetration o
objects when subjected to impact rom objects. i.e., 4kg, 50mm
x 100mm timber piece on its end, traveling at 15metres per
second. These products use either conventional or specially
ormulated interlayers.
It must be noted that this glass may still break upon impact,
but will prevent penetration o the object. The glass should be
an integral part o the raming system designed to prevent the
rame and glass rom blowing in or out when impacted.
stormguard
Grade A laminated saety glass specically designed or
buildings in Australia or the South Pacic cyclone prone regions
described by both AS/NZS1170.2 or wherever buildings require
protection rom strong winds and airborne debris. Available in
thicknesses o 12.28mm 13.88mm laminated. This glass needs
to be incorporated into a window rame capable o retaining
the glass in positive and negative wind cycles.
stormshield
Incorporating a specially ormulated polyacrylic laminate,
StormShield is a Grade A saety glass designed to resist
penetration rom fying debris and excessive wind speeds.
Available in a thicknesses 7.88, 9.88, 11.88 and 13.88mm. The
glass should be an integral part o the raming system designed
to prevent the rame and glass rom blowing in or out when
impacted.

storm shutters
The cost associated with cyclone resistant glass may initially
deter the building owner. Thereore, an option could be to use
storm shutters. However, the use o storm shutters presents
some new problems. First o all the area o the glazing may be
too large or dicult or xing o shutters (i.e. large commercial
building) and may secondly detract rom the appearance o thebuilding. Thirdly, storm protection is reliant on people deploying
the shutters in time. A cyclone may be easier to track and
predict rather than a one o storm which may catch people by
surprise, not giving them enough time to deploy shutters. Last
o all, shutters must be periodically maintained to ensure they
work when the time is needed. Cyclone resistant glass has the
benets o being ready at any time and not drastically altering
the appearance o the building.
SGP laminated glass
DuPont SentryGlas Plus (SGP) interlayer is the latest in a
long line o products oered by DuPont or use in laminated
saety glass. In response to architectural and transportation
industry demands or tougher window systems with glass on
both the inner and outer suraces, DuPont has introduced SGP
ionoplast interlayer. In properly designed window systems, this
technology has passed demanding hurricane protection codes in
Southern Florida. It also oers improved ballistic protection or
thinner constructions than are now possible with conventional
laminated glass. SGP oers ve times the tear strength and 100
times the rigidity o conventional PVB laminated glass interlayer.
features and applications
SGP laminates oer extended unctionality versus laminates
with traditional interlayers and makes them very suitable or
the applications where the ollowing eatures are required:
0 Stronger laminates, particularly when bending stress state
is dominant
In 2-sided/1-sided support conditions
In point-support congurations
In high aspect ratio (>1.5) plates with 4-side support;
0 Lower defection;
0 High tear strength;
0 High stiness;
0 Low creep;
0 Impact and structural perormance over a wide
temperature range;
0 Superior post-glass breakage properties;
0 Improved edge stability over standard PVBs;
0 High Clarity;
0 Low optical distortion (in some cases SGP can eliminate the
need to use toughened or heat strengthened glass).
interlayers and thicknesses
Available in clear only 1.52mm and 2.28mm ionoplast
interlayer thicknesses. For colours, a body tinted glass must be
incorporated in the make-up. SGP cannot be laminated with
conventional PVB interlayer.
sizes
0 Maximum SGP interlayer size 3000mm x 1800mm.
edge stability anddelamination
SGP laminates are displaying excellent weathering perormance.
Ater more than 7 years o natural weathering in Florida, USA
no deects were observed in the laminated glass samples and
along the edges. Tests with neutral cure structural silicone
sealants have also revealed excellent perormance. This providesthe opportunity to use exposed edge laminated glass with less
concern o edge delamination.

basic attack resistance
Laminated glass is available using a 1.52mm interlayer to
make a 6.52mm and 11.52mm laminated glass. These products
are ideal or situations where the noise generated by the
attack alerts neighbours or occupants. The thicker interlayer is
designed to signicantly increase the amount o time and eortrequired by the intruder to gain access through the glazing. This
serves to dissuade and thwart would be intruders or burglars.
security glazing systems
intruder resistantglazing systems
As covered by AS3555 Building elements Testing and rating
or intruder resistance, specic types o orced entry resistant
glazing systems have been developed to withstand physicalattack with common hand tools, axes, sledges and power tools
etc.
These systems utilise a multi-laminated glass which can include
polycarbonate and polymer sheets with PVB interlayers. These
products are supplied as a complete rame and glass unit.
The standard AS3555 evaluates the maximum size opening
allowed ater a number o minutes and by a level o attack.
This standard does not cover bullet resistant attack, but can be
manuactured to do so.
bullet resistantglazing systems
These systems consist o a complete rame and glass bullet
resistant unit. A multi-laminated glass which can include
polycarbonate and polymer sheets with PVB interlayers is
laminated together to various thicknesses according to the levelo protection required as per the seven classication levels in
AS2343 Bullet resistant panels and elements(reer Table 18a).
In common applications thicknesses vary rom 1965mm.
Bullet resistant glazing systems can also be manuactured to
meet AS3555 Building elements Testing and rating or intruder
resistance.
bomb and blast resistantglass
Bomb blast generates energy in all directions, not just at the
intended target. In many cases, people and buildings that are
not targeted suer injury and damage respectively. In act with
a small device, even buildings several hundred metres away
rom the targeted building suer glass breakage.
To resist the blast eect o a bomb, the complete window
assembly must withstand two specic assaults. Firstly the
blast wave, which expands in all directions rom the bomb as
it detonates and secondly the ragments rom the bomb case
or container, which may include nails, bolts, screws and other
pieces o metal.

privacy glass
Patterned glass may be an option in toilets and bathrooms.
However in act, they just obscure the object in view and
thereore are not the ideal orm o privacy glass. Tinted glass
and specialist products such as SuperGrey are very dark
in appearance and oer varying degrees o privacy duringdaylight. However, like all glass including refective glass, at
night time, when levels o illumination inside are much higher
than outside, the opposite will occur where an unobscured
view in will be oered. Indeed, the best solution may lie in
choosing a glass to suit your other intended glazing needs in
combination with a blind or curtain.

security laminated one waymirror glass
National Glass stocks 6.38mm SS8 Grey laminated glass or
one way mirror applications. This glass is ideal or surveillance,
security and where discreet observation is required. A successul
application requires a brightly lit subject side and a darker
observation side with the correct use o lighting. Please reer to
the ollowing glazing guidelines when ordering:
0 Not suited or windows or outside applications;
0 Glaze the more refective surace to the subject side;
0 Lighting must be maximised on the subject side to a ratio
o 7:1 (see Diagram 18.1);
0 This lighting must not shine directly on the glass;0 Lighting in the observers room must be kept away rom the
glazing. Any windows, doorways etc in the observers room
that may emit light, must be prevented rom doing so;
0 Walls, foors and urnishings on observation side to be dark
and subdued colours;

switchable glass
Windows normally allow you to see as well as to be seen.
However, sometimes it may be desirable to be shielded rom
prying eyes. Switchable glass oers you this privacy at the fick
o a switch. The unique technology allows it to be switched
rom an ordinary looking clear glass to a translucent glass,ensuring optimal vision control. All it takes is a simple electrical
switch, like turning the lights on.
features and applications
