At Aquablast we have the latest equipment in cleaning far superior to the average jet washer some households may have.

We offer two cleaning methods:A Cold Wash – gets rid of moss, mould and yearly built up grimeA Power Hot Wash – for stubborn grime, chewing gum, graffi ti & more. It gets up to 150 degrees and brings most things back to like new.

Aquablast also offers a sealant service, giving your drive protection from sun rays and weather. All work is guaranteed.

Your driveway cost £1000’s to lay originally, so why not revive it today by calling Aquablast. Free quotes given on all jobs.

Cyclists; love them or hate them you can’t deny that they are everywhere at the moment.

Whether or not you like taking to the road on two wheels, you can probably appreciate that having a car crawling behind you while waiting to pass is just as frustrating for the cyclist as it is for the driver.

And as the weather perks up, you can guarantee that more and more people will be taking their bike out for a ride.

So please, whether you are behind a wheel or at the handle bars, let’s all be patient and considerate on the roads and don’t forget those helmets.

But it’s not just your own safety that you need to be mindful of, take a moment to think about the security of your bike otherwise you could be facing a long walk home.

Most bike owners do the right thing by securing their cycles to allocated posts. The problem is the chains that are often used are very easy to cut.

Putting a £5 padlock or chain on a £1,000 bike is a bit like closing your front door but leaving it unlocked. It isn’t enough to stop criminals.

Take pride in your ride. Lock up your bike if you leave it, no matter how short your stop, and always park where it can be seen clearly.

D-locks are stronger than cable locks or chains as they are a solid metal and very difficult to cut through. Make sure the lock is

tight so that your bike is difficult to move around, twist or lever when it is parked.

Never lock your bike to something that is weaker than your lock and never leave the lock lying on the ground where it could be smashed easily.

Mark your bike’s frame via Bike Register or with Selectamark or CreMark.

Always keep a record of the frame/serial number and take photos of your bike, including details such as the make, model, frame size, colour and any other unique markings that could help us find it.

Register those details at www.immobilise.com or www.bikeregister.com as this will help us get your bike back to you if it is stolen and later recovered.

Report suspicious or unusual activity around bikes to police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 with any information.

The Nottingham Centre (supporters of National Trust) has enjoyed a very successful twelve months under the excellent leadership of Sylvia Hale, who took over as chairman last year.

This year’s summer excursions got off to a good start with a visit to the Macclesfield Silk Museums, and Cuckoo Clock Museum. This was followed by a trip to Iron Bridge Gorge museums in May.In June, members are looking forward to a day in Lincolnshire, visiting Alford Manor House, reputedly the largest thatched manor house in England. After lunch the party moves on to Gunby Hall. There are no booked tours here so visitors are free to explore the lovely gardens at leisure.Keen walkers can also enjoy an organised ‘TV’ walk through Lyme Park in the Peak District. Then in August a three day walking holiday is planned.

The thriving Garden Interest Group will visit Doddington Hall Gardens, near Lincoln, Park Farm, Southwell, and Penarth Gardens, Sherwood, a beautiful garden found in the unlikely setting of the old Nottingham Brickwork quarry.

The Nottingham Centre is affiliated to National Trust and takes pleasure in contributing financially to NT properties in need. Over the past year donations have been given to several properties, including Belton House, Croome Park, Rufford Old Hall, and Stoneywell, a beautiful ‘Arts and Crafts’ house in Leicestershire, a recent acquisition.

The cost to join the Nottingham Centre is £6.00 for individual membership, £10.00 per couple, but it is necessary to be a member of National Trust to join. It is a friendly organisation offering something for everyone. In winter meetings are held at The Mechanics, North Sherwood Street, Nottingham.

For more information contact the membership Secretary, Heather Brooks, Tel: 0115 943 6272, (mobile/weekends: 07867563885) email:[email protected]

D OF E Success for 2418 (Sherwood) Squadron

2013 saw 2418 (Sherwood) Squadron achieve 43 Duke of Edinburgh Awards, consisting of 23 Bronze, 16 Silver and 4 Gold awards. Pictured are some of the squadron receiving their awards from Sqn Ldr Carl Wilson.

Flight Lieutenant Donna Bates said “We have 50 enrolled cadets on the squadron, so that equates to 86%”. She continues “So what about the other 14%?”. “Well they were simply under the age to enrol them in the DofE Scheme!” replied Flight Lietenant David Wheeler. What an amazing set of results!

2014 should see the squadron continue this success as each cadet passing Bronze and Silver moves up to the next level.

2418 Welcomes the National Cadet Coordinator of Ghana

On Thursday the 20th March 2014, 2418 squadron welcomed General Nicholas Nii Tettey-Amarteifio, the national cadet coordinator of Ghana, to sample a night with a British Air Cadet squadron.

The General received a warm welcome from all the cadets and staff at 2418 squadron who were honoured to host him for the evening. He, along with his fellow guests, looked around the squadron and talked to the cadets to get an understanding of what a night on the squadron was like. He also talked to cadets about the Ghana cadet force and what they would normally do on a night at their unit. One cadet said “it was a great experience to be able to meet such a distinguished guest”. On the squadron’s final parade, the General spoke to the whole squadron and taught them a few of the Ghana traditions on how to thank people.

2418 Race to the Finish Line at Regional Cross Country

Recently, Sgt Jamie Knighton, 19, Cadet Darron Scott, 16 and Cadet Emily Ellis, 13 represented the Wing at Inter Wing Cross Country at RAF Cranwell. Throughout the tough, intense race Sgt Jamie Knighton managed to maintain a positive attitude working hard with his team members.

Sgt Knighton came a staggering 7th place out of twenty-four runners. He said he felt overwhelmed and proud. Overall Junior Men came 2nd out of six teams in the Region. Sgt Jamie Knighton walked away with a silver medal and was honoured to be representing South and East Midlands Wing for the

last time.Cdt Emily Ellis and Cdt Darron Scott on the other hand were running for the first time representing the Wing and they gave it their all. Overall South and East Midlands finished 3rd.

2418 Squadron News....

Annual Presentation EveningIn March, 2418 Sherwood Squadron held their

annual presentation evening at Ramsdale Golf Club. Many of the cadets and their families attended the awards ceremony. Wing staff officer Squadron Leader Wilson presented the cadets with their awards despite still being in recovery from a road accident. After this the Squadron Leader made a speech congratulating the cadets and staff on how organized and motivated the squadron was.Cadets were rewarded for all their hard work,

achieving Duke of Edinburgh certificates, marksmen awards, commitment and dedication awards, and even some promotions! Not only were the cadets recognised, but also the hardworking staff were presented with flowers and awards for their dedication and giving up their own time to help run and manage the squadron. The squadron would like to thank Ramsdale for their services and a brilliant night.

Nottingham has a lot to o er. Many visitors from the UK and globally enjoy the city, which boasts

excellent entertainment venues, including the Royal Centre and Capital FM Arena. Retail therapy is another major attraction, for visitors to Nottingham. Fashion (many designer), independents and high street names satisfy today’s requirements, very well indeed.

Perhaps a boat trip on the River Trent appeals or a visit to the National Water Sports Centre, at nearby Holme Pierrepont. Nottingham is home to the National Ice Centre, too. Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem, reputed to be the country’s oldest inn, is a popular venue amongst many very interesting properties, in and around Nottingham.

e Bentinck Hotel, Bar and Brasserie, is in a perfect location, next to Nottingham’s rail and tram stations. Healthy and hearty breakfasts

satisfy all tastes. Lunch and dinner menus can include popular starters of Smoked Salmon & Prawn Salad

Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is looking for help to build a library of pictures covering 100 years of Brownies across the county.

This year marks the centenary of the formation of Brownies, which is the section of Girlguiding specifically for girls aged 7-10. Activities to mark the milestone are taking place all

over the UK and one of the projects here in Nottinghamshire is to compile a digital photo-album showing Brownies in action over the decades. The pictures will also be used to support news stories about the Brownies’ celebrations, and the best ones will be sent to ITV Central News for a feature later in the year.

‘We’re asking people to scour their attics and old photograph albums to find archive pictures of local Brownies and their leaders,’ says Aspley Guide Leader Kayleigh Hunt, who is managing the project for Girlguiding Nottinghamshire. ‘The pictures should be scanned and sent to us by e-mail, accompanied by brief details as to who’s in the picture and when or where it was taken. The images will be added into our Big Brownie Photo-Album, creating a unique record of Brownies in Notts.’

K a y l e i g h stresses that she is not asking for treasured original photographs to be sent in. ‘We need digital files only, preferably jpgs,’ she says. ‘But anyone without access to a scanner is welcome to get in touch and I’ll do my best to help get their pictures added to our album!’

Concerts and gigs are a big part of modern teenage culture, especially for me. There seems to be a massive amount of bands and arti sts playing at so many diff erent venues and, over the past couple of months, I have had the chance to experience three very diff erent types of gigs: the sold-out arena tour, the smaller gig venue and local bands at a nearby pub. But does the size of the venue change the experience or is it really all about the music?

Fall Out Boy at the NIA, Birmingham- This year, Fall Out Boy have stormed back into the music scene and their fans proved how much they missed them by selling out their UK arena tour. No one can deny the excitement of the arena tour; tens of thousands of people screaming the same lyrics, balloons and confetti falling from the ceiling and the room being lit with lighters and phone screens during the classic ballads. I experienced all of these things at the Fall Out Boy gig and, without sounding too corny, it is magical. But you are so far away!

All Time Low at the 02 Academy, Birmingham-Although this venue was signifi cantly smaller than an arena, there is sti ll a very disti ncti ve, energeti c atmosphere. If you like squishy, packed crowds then this is the place for you. For some, this might sound like hell, but being that up-close and personal to fans who are just there to enjoy the band creates what you could describe as a music community. This inti macy means that when the lead guitarist decides to jump into the crowd, you get the excitement of touching his hand just for a second- that’s a good feeling that All Time Low captured perfectly.

Local open mic nights-I’ve been to a lot of these recently watching my sister’s band ‘A Perfect Lie’ performing both electric and acousti c sets. It’s great watching new, young bands because you can tell how much they appreciate you taking the ti me to watch them. You can just see how much fun they are having and how much energy they bring and that just makes the experience so much more enjoyable. It’s cheap and there are always local venues to go to so you have no real excuse to not go and support your local bands! You never know, they might be touring the world one day and you would have seen them fi rst; that would be cool.

I personally think that music can be enjoyed wherever and whoever it is. Be open minded and willing to try new venues and genres because you might just fi nd a new obsession!

Handling Friends

Next issue:

Handling Family

Holidays

They say that you can’t choose your family, but what about your second family? What about the family that you spend every ‘working’ day of the week with? This family can definitely be your own personal pick and for lots of us it takes many years to perfect; swapping and changing friendship groups in primary school and ending up with a new best friend every day. However in our teenage years we seem to have grown out of this and we all have friends that are there to stay- our second family.

I am lucky enough to have found a group that are as wacky as me. You can’t have friends that don’t understand your weird ways (and you of course have to trust them to not tell everyone else these weird ways!). I see some friendship groups that constantly argue over silly things and it’s impossible to keep up with who is friends with who or who took who’s side- it must be exhausting! If you can’t stick with your friends for longer than a week without some sort of dispute then maybe they aren’t your ‘best friends for life’ after all. With the stress of school and families that some teens have to live with, a solid friendship group is needed for that support and release when you just need a laugh!

In secondary schools, everyone always pictures the stereotypical friendship divide: the nerds, the jocks, the popular group. But is that realistic? Are we living in ‘Mean Girls’? Maybe to some extent but in the big picture, we are all just sleepy teenagers that turn up to school and complain together about being there. The biggest stereotypical problem is that you can barely walk down the corridor with a member of the opposite sex without being attacked with wolf whistles and questions about if you are a new couple. Sure, some people tease, but really, after five years in school, they should have realised that you are not a new couple and just friends!

Basically, friends can torment you sometimes but that’s what they’re there for! Imagine how boring life would be if everyone was serious the whole time; that doesn’t appeal to me! If you can’t have a laugh with and get support from your friends then what is the point?!

Why can I not get rid of the fl eas on my cat, even though I am treating him?

The main reason fl ea control is not working is either you are not using an effective treatment, you are not using it frequently enough or you are not controlling reinfection from eggs left in the cat's local environment.Flea treatment should be carried out all the year round, it is important that you also treat carpets etc for fl ea eggs & larvae and that you treat all cats, dogs and even rabbits living in the house.Always get advice from your veterinary surgeon or pharmacist who should be able to provide you with the most effective treatments.

Why is my dog itchy in Summer? He may be licking his feet, scratching his ears, his skin may be red and hot and he may be losing hair from his coat. The most common cause of itching is ECZEMA or allergic dermatitis. This is a very common problem especially in Summer.Eczema is due to an allergic reaction to things in the environment such as Fleas, Tree & Grass Pollens. If your dog shows some or all of these signs then it is best if he is taken to the vet who will try to assess the problem and prescribe relevant treatments, these often include fl ea control, medicated shampoo and tablets to combat itches and infections.

Readers are invited to make a real difference to local, vulnerable animals by joining a local ‘lifeline’ animal charity.Nottingham based Animal Accident Rescue Unit provides a literal lifeline to injured, abandoned and neglected domestic animals plus wildlife. Its work is only made possible from a mixture of donations: financial from kind members of the public - and time from its volunteers. For a modest annual subscription, membership of this small charity is potentially

the best way to help it continue - and brings with it benefits such as newsletters. Whether for yourself or as a present for another, this gift ‘keeps on giving’. Alternatively, weekly or monthly payments, direct from a bank account or by cheque can be

arranged. Yearly membership is currently OAP/student/unwaged at £3.50, single at £7 or family at £10 – whilst tax can be reclaimed on Gift Aid status donations. As one volunteer explains on costs: ‘If, for example, existing members gave just £1 a week, this would buy a year’s supply of insulin and needles for a diabetic cat, or microchips for fostered animals.’ As a registered charity, donators can be assured that every donation goes where it should; helping dogs like Ellie (pictured) who readers may recall was found in an appalling state … but thanks to the charity’s supporters was rehomed to a lovely home.To join or donate to help Animal Accident Rescue Unit’s work, visit www.aaru.org.uk to join securely online using Paypal, email [email protected], call 0115-932 1555 or write to Animal Accident Rescue Unit, PO Box 5414, Nottingham NG14 5DT for a membership form.

Preparing For Interview by Helen Jones

The UK economy is forecast to grow this year with most predictions running well above 2%. As the employment market becomes increasingly fluid the opportunity for interview becomes much more likely. There are many things that can be done to maximise the potential for success when connecting with a possible employer. In any situation preparation is key as the lack of it can seriously inhibit self-confidence.

Before any type of interview give yourself plenty of time to• Research the role and the organisation – think about how your experience and skills fit the job and company ethos• Anticipate the questions you may be asked – prepare answers• Find out how the interview will be conducted e.g. single, panel, groupMany employers will screen candidates by telephone initially. When preparing for this type of interview it’s important to consider: • Your tone of voice – be enthusiastic and use positive language• Battery life – charge your mobile fully before the interview• Location – find a quiet place where you will not be disturbedAt a face to face interview it’s imperative that you stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons by ensuring:• You arrive on time or better still, early• You are organised. Take along your application, CV and examples of work ( if appropriate)with you• You listen carefully to the questions and answer concisely• Your body language is confident and outgoing. It’s a proven fact that non-verbal communication is an important factor when considering applicants• You have practised the points that you want to get across. Build your confidence by hearing yourself speak before the actual meetingTime and time again we encounter candidates who have represented themselves poorly at interview because they did not get the basics right before attending. It is imperative that you• Plan the day of the interview, especially the journey. Take cash in case you need to take a taxi or bus unexpectedly, carry an A-Z map or put the destination postcode into Google maps on your mobile to prevent getting lost• Decide beforehand what to wear and set it out the night before – clean and pressed. Suits and business wear are the best option with clean, polished shoes• Get an early night – it makes sense! For further advice or help with your recruitment needs please contact me direct [email protected] “Our Talent is Finding Yours” © Helen Jones

MUSICAL roundupIf you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. Every month, space permitting, we will include the latest news, concert information and forthcoming events. You just need to email us at: [email protected] by the first Friday of the month.

Introducing Carlton Brass..

Our roots date back to the old Netherfield Railwayman’s Silver Band formed in 1902 at the Colwick Locomotive Depot, part of the Great Northern Railway. Carlton Band Organisation now consists of two sister bands Carlton Brass (Nottingham) 2nd Section Band, and Carlton Brass Training Band. Both bands attend a wide range of events from contests to weddings and Christmas Carols. Carlton Training Band have just started sending out their requirement squad to local schools, providing an interactive assembly and getting children interested in their local brass band. With having the two sister bands we cater for a wide range of abilities and age groups ranging from 8 to the over 50s. You are never too old to learn a new skill! If you fancy giving it a go for further information please contact: Heather Foley 07954384987 or Gwen Woolley 07747 196808

Eastwood Collieries’ Male Voice Choir – 93 years old and still going strong!

Founded in 1920, ECMVC is still very much alive and kicking all these years later. ECMVC is not only very proud of its history but continues to innovate and promote the very best of male voice singing as it performs for local groups and audiences, hosts visiting choirs and joins others as guests elsewhere. In 2008, ECMVC took a bold idea and turned it into reality. What about inviting a few other local choirs to join in and raise some much needed funds for charity? Sounds Sensational was born and has raised thousands of pounds for charity over the years. As important as these events are, the choir have at their heart the need to promote the enjoyment of singing whilst performing on their own for local organisations. For the very latest news and concert details, please visit the choir’s website – www.ecmvc.org.

On the 5th July this year, along with another 299 cyclists, Sergio will set out from London on a quest to cycle to Paris in only 24 hours.

This 24 hour cycle challenge is to raise more moeny for Scope. Leaving Blackheath London at 12 Noon on Saturday 5th July the riders hope to cover the 280 miles to Paris, arriving at the Eiffel Tower by Sunday 6th July.

Last year the ride took place on the hottest weekend of the year and Paris sweltered in 35° sunshine. Sergio remembers: “It was most unwelcome when you've been cycling all through the night! But it was worth it for the estimated £300,000 that we all raised for Scope.”

This year the cyclists hope to raise even more for this fantastic charity. Readers can give on Sergios Virgin Money giving page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/L2P24hrSergio and you can follow the ride via Strava live.

Will you be thriving or surviving this year?

Lacking Self Belief…?

Worn down with other problems or issues…? Sometimes problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough, we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking

self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs - perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive so easily.
