NFPA72 – 2010 Changes

• Direction from NFPA Technical Correlating Committee (TCC)

• Remove the word “fire” where possible, i.e.

– Fundamentals of Fire Alarm Systems

– Supervising Station Fire Alarm Systems

• 8.3.7.1.1 Alarm signals initiated by manual fire alarm boxes, automatic fire detectors, waterflow from the automatic sprinkler system, or actuation of other fire suppression system(s) or equipment shall be treated as fire alarms.

Initiating Devices - Chapter 17

• 17.4.8 Where smoke detectors are installed in concealed locations more than 10 ft (3.0 m) above the finished floor or in arrangements where the detector’s alarm or supervisory indicator is not visible to responding personnel, the detectors shall be provided with remote alarm or supervisory indication in a location acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction.

Level 0 (Default)-Level O pathways shall not be required to have any provisions for pathway survivability.

Level 1-Fully sprinklered building per NFPA 13 AND-Metal raceway for physical pathways.

Level 2 – one or more of the following:2-hour-rated circuit integrity (CI) cable.2-hour-fire rated cable system [electrical circuit protective systems].2-hour-rated fire enclosure or protected area.2-hour performance alternative approved by the AHJ.

Notification Circuits - Class B, Level 1

Door Holders – Class D, Level 0

Special requirements for Healthcare or facilities employing relocation or partial evacuation or Mass Notification;

Level 2 or Level 3 pathway survivability shall be required.

Low Frequency Requirements

18.4.5.3

Waking Effectiveness:

The low frequency signal with a fundamental frequency of 520 Hz is most effective signal for awakening people who are hard of hearing.

Low frequency 520 Hz signal awoke 92% between 55 dBA and 75 dBA.

Low frequency signal is superior to bed and pillow shakers and strobe lights.

Sleeping Area Requirements – 18.4.5

18.4.5 Sleeping Area Requirements.

18.4.5.1* Where audible appliances are installed to provide signals for sleeping areas, they shall have a sound level of at least 15 dB above the average ambient sound level or 5 dB above the maximum sound level having a duration of at least 60 seconds or a sound level of at least 75 dBA, whichever is greater, measured at the pillow level in the area required to be served by the system using the A-weighted scale (dBA).

18.4.5.2 If any barrier, such as a door, curtain, or retractable partition, is located between the notification appliance and the pillow, the sound pressure level shall be measured with the barrier placed between the appliance and the pillow.

18.4.5.3* Effective January 1, 2014, where audible appliances are provided to produce signals for sleeping areas, they shall produce a low frequency alarm signal that complies with the following:

(1) The alarm signal shall be a square wave or provide equivalent awakening ability.

(2) The wave shall have a fundamental frequency of 520 Hz ± 10 percent.

NFPA72 – 2010 EditionCh 24 – Emergency Communications24.4.1.4 Tones. The tone preceding any message shall be permitted to be a part of the voice message or to be transmitted automatically from a separate tone generator.

24.4.1.4.1 In occupancies where sleeping accommodations are provided, the pre-alert tone shall include a low frequency component of 520 Hz square wave range to accommodate the need of the hearing impaired for fire voice messages and emergency communication messages.

• 29.3.8 Notification appliances provided in sleeping rooms and guest rooms for those with hearing loss shall comply with 29.3.8.1 and 29.3.8.2, as applicable.

• 29.3.8.1 Mild to Severe Hearing Loss. Notification appliances provided for those with mild to severe hearing loss shall comply with the following:

(1) An audible notification appliance producing a low frequency alarm signal shall be installed in the following situations:(a)*Where required by governing laws, codes or standards for people with hearing loss(b) Where provided voluntarily for those with hearing loss(2)*The low frequency alarm signal output shall comply with the following:(a) The alarm signal shall be a square wave or provide equivalent awakening ability.(b)*The wave shall have a fundamental frequency of 520 Hz + / −10 percent.(c) The minimum sound level at the pillow shall be 75 dBA, or 15 dB above the average ambient sound level, or 5 dB above the maximum sound level having a duration of at least 60 seconds, whichever is greater.

Documentation Requirements2013 - 7.7.2

• With every new system, a documentation cabinet shall be installed at the system control unit or at another approved location at the protected premises.

• All record documentation shall be stored in the documentation cabinet.

• The documentation cabinet shall be prominently labeled SYSTEM RECORD DOCUMENTS .

• The contents of the cabinet shall be accessible by authorized personnel only.

• Every system shall include the following documentation, which shall be delivered to the owner or the owner’s representative upon final acceptance of the system:

• (1)*An owner’s manual and manufacturer’s published instructions covering all system equipment

• (2) Record drawings

• (3) For software-based systems, record copy of the site-specific software

• (4) A written sequence of operation

SLC Zones - 2013 & 2016 Updated

Added 23.6.1, introducing the concept of signaling line circuit (SLC) zones and the requirements associated with not permitting a single fault on the SLC to cause the loss of devices in more than one zone.

(The intent of 23.6.1 applies to both short-circuit faults and open-circuit faults.)

23.6.1* SLC Zones.

A single fault on a pathway connected to the addressable devices shall not cause the loss of the devices in more than 50 addressable devices one zone.
