Thirty years ago few would have thought that Leadership Saint Paul (LSP) would not only still be around, but would be the region’s leading leadership development program. Each year LSP selects approximately 40-50 emerging and existing leaders in the East Metro and challenges them to dive deep into the cultural and community fabric that ties our region together. Coming from the private, public and non-profit sectors, these leaders learn and challenge each other to raise awareness of the challenges and needs of Saint Paul and the East Metro. Now in its 30th year, LSP continues to change perspectives, motivate and empower business leaders in ways that honor and build on the legacy of all who have gone through the program before them.
“If I hadn’t gone through LSP…”When Julie Larson, 2010 Foundation board chair and Leadership Saint Paul alumni, class of 2001, recalled the time
when she initially heard about Leadership Saint Paul she said, “My first thought was I am really busy and there is no way I can take off a whole day! Well, that day that I took off was the best day—definitely time well spent. If I hadn’t gone through LSP I wouldn’t be nearly as involved or knowledgeable of the community.” Since graduation Larson has continued to assist on several program days, including Criminal Justice Day, Economic Development Day and Media Day.
Program DaysLSP is a ten-month program, meeting at least one full day each month, in which participants attend day-long sessions that draw attention to the challenges facing the region. Covering topics as diverse as community effectiveness, education, health care, regional economic development and criminal justice, participants hear directly from professionals who work daily in these subject areas. Each program day features a single theme

that allows LSP participants to fully immerse themselves in the issue. Avoiding the temptation to provide simple answers to complex problems, LSP program days force participants to confront the complex dynamics of 21st century problem solving. Each experience is designed to expose participants to a variety of perspectives on the issues facing their local community. “You always walk away with new knowledge about how the city runs, how everything works together, and how to pursue your passions,” said Larson. “If you have a passion for politics, for example, Government Day is great for you. Whatever your passion, you will find your niche.”
“One program day that is shocking for people is our Health and Human Services Day where we visit Dorothy Day. In the past we actually served the clients and then went into the dining room to eat with them. You sleep in a huge, open room with people you may or may not know, using bathrooms, taking showers and using toiletries that are not your own. People have ID cards with their photo on them and for some people that is the only thing that identifies them as a person. These are
human beings put in certain circumstances—circumstances that could easily happen to me or you,” said Larson.

Community Service Projects In addition to program days, LSP participants work on a service project in small teams in partnership with a variety of non-profit organizations. Larson recalled, “When I went through Leadership Saint Paul we worked on making a junk room into a library at Face to Face Crisis Center. We cleared the whole thing out, painted it, put up bookshelves and collected donations of books, computers and furniture. Ultimately we transformed a junk room into a library.”
Mindee Kastelic, director of member services at the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce and recent LSP graduate, class of 2010, teamed up with five of her classmates and the Saint Paul Public Schools Foundation’s Tutoring Partnership to tutor Saint Paul youth in reading and math. Kastelic and classmates gained first-hand experience as tutors and expanded the project to recruit 100 volunteer tutors each year from Saint Paul businesses. “I often felt my hour of tutoring weekly was the most impactful thing I had done all week,” said Kastelic.
How does Leadership Saint Paul benefit your business?Leadership Saint Paul participants leave the program with an increased awareness of the issues that impact Saint Paul and the East Metro as a resident, employee and a business. Armed with this knowledge, and connected to a vast network of over 1,400 alumni, these individuals become not only catalysts for change, but individuals with the knowledge and capacity to change things for the better. Countless projects have been initiated by Leadership Saint Paul alumni that make our community a better place to live, work and do business. LSP challenges diverse groups of leaders to formulate strong bonds with their classmates and graduate feeling empowered that they can make a difference

professionally and personally. And for over 30 years, that spirit has never left this incredible program.
For example, 2010 LSP participant Marc Kotsonas, CPA with Mahoney, Ulbrich, Christiansen & Russ, P.A., was motivated to find a solution to an issue his company faced: a lack of broadband internet access. Rallying other businesses in the area, Marc worked with the Riverview Economic Development Association, Saint Paul City Councilmember Dave Thune and Comcast to develop a proposal that provided affordable broadband access to the businesses of Saint Paul’s West Side.
Congratulations Class of 2010“In economic times like this it is extremely important for companies to be able to work together and come up with creative business solutions. This year’s class of 2010 practiced this mentality with an impressive and successful completion of eight service projects,” said Dan Lehv, Assistant General Manager, Saint Paul Saints and LSP curriculum committee chair. After graduation, high-level business professionals grow into strong, volunteer-driven advocates of the Saint Paul/East
Metro community. With a gained sense of stewardship, it is common for graduates to follow in the footsteps of Leadership Saint Paul alumni and continue their community involvement. Several graduates this year will move on to assist in program and curriculum development, helping to shape and improve classes for future participants. Lehv said, “In an economic environment where we are increasingly pressed for time, it is a huge accomplishment for fifty individuals to take away one day each month to service their community, and that is something they should be recognized for.”
For individuals interested in joining the Leadership Saint Paul class of 2011, a limited number of spots are currently available. For more information on the application process or LSP sponsorship opportunities, contact Stephanie Austin, director of education and foundation, at [email protected] or 651.265.2786.

“I looked around at our new home, the Triple A Motel—cigarette-burned carpet, one window, two beds and a bathroom, $35 per night—resting on the outskirts of Denver in a place called Commerce City. One lousy motel room to house nine miserable lives. It would be the first of two different motel rooms that we would call home over the next year and throughout the course of my eighth-grade year of school. Disheartened, at best, described my state of mind.” —Tommy Watson, from A Face of Courage
Tommy Watson, who received a B.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1997, is now the principal at Palmer Lake Elementary, a school of about 700 kids in Brooklyn Park.
As the non-profit arm of the largest local chamber in Minnesota, the Foundation is uniquely positioned to bring business leaders together to build a competent, educated workforce. A high-quality workforce is the key to remaining globally competitive in the new economy. Career Investment Scholarships are given to graduating seniors in the Saint Paul/East Metro as they seek a path that will make them valuable members and employees of the community. From homelessness to learning English as a high school student, the majority of our scholarship recipients face enormous challenges on their path to college. Most are low income, minority students and many are the first in their family to pursue higher education, but all of them have enormous potential to succeed.
Please join us at Ramsey County’s newest library in Roseville to hear from Tommy Watson, local educator and author of A Face of Courage, and to learn more about your Chamber’s Charitable Foundation and its work building scholars, leaders and communities.

The couple eventually sold their store and established manufacturing facilities in Saint Paul with sales in 1919 totaling one million bags.
