The Big Sir Says . . . (continued from front page) Swan Song - Since this is my last “The Big Sir Says…” column before I step down, I want to take this space to thank all Branch 35 members who helped me this year and last, including the Executive Committee and all of the myriad volunteers who make Branch 35 hum. I am especially proud of the members’ enthusiastic embracing of my challenge to bring in new members. We started the year with 348 active members. Through October we have inducted 58 new members YTD and now stand at 380 actives. We had 7 guests at the October luncheon, and Arden tells me that he already has 4 applications in hand for November induction. So, growth will continue, and early in 2011 I expect the total active members to surpass our Branch 35 previous all-time high of 391 set in 1995, fifteen years ago. Who are you inviting as a guest for the November 17 luncheon?

Ken

Kudos to Ken He has run the race and run it well!

With a laser-like focus on the need for membership growth and cost containment, our Big Sir has consistently and conscientiously pushed for Branch 35 success in these and other areas. Our traditional activities are strong, and the Travel activity is now offering us many new options. Kenʼs sure sense of what had to be done and when it was needed skillfully guided the Branch throughout the year. He has gifted our Branch with his experience, energy, and passion for the Branchʼs well being. For all that you have done, Ken, Thanks from all of us!

John Richardson, Little Sir

I used to be indecisive. Now I’m not sure.

Celebrate the Holidays with a SIR One-Day Outing! Dec. 9, 2010 Christmas Lights in San Francisco Get into the Christmas spirit with a holiday trip to San Francisco. Coach up to San Francisco in the early afternoon, stopping at Union Square for a little shopping before heading to Fior D'Italia - America's Oldest Italian Restaurant. Enjoy an early dinner followed by a performance of the Showtime Follies Cabaret Review, a toe tapping trip through Vaudeville, Broadway, and Hollywood. After the show take a coach tour of San Francisco's beautiful Christmas lights. The cost for this trip is $118. Dec. 15, 2010 Beach Blanket Babylon Beach Blanket Babylon is the longest running musical review in theater history. It's a zany, musical spoof of pop culture, famous worldwide for its extravagant costumes and outrageously huge hats. Trip includes dinner and shopping time in the Union Square area, deluxe motor coach, and all gratuities The cost is $160 per person, and although the trip is currently full there is a short standby list with a good probability of getting a reservation. Jan. 12, 2011 Paris in Your Backyard Coach up to San Francisco in the morning the Deyoung Museum to see the post-impressionist masters on loan from the Musée d'Orsay. This exhibit includes 120 pieces of art from Van Gogh, Gauguin, Lautrec, Cezanne, and other masters. After a hosted lunch at the Beach Chalet Brewery and Restaurant spend the afternoon at the Walt Disney Family Museum at the Presidio for an interesting look at the life and achievements of the man who raised animation to an art, transformed the film industry, tirelessly pursued innovation, and created a global and distinctly American legacy. The cost for this trip is $128. Let us hear from you. A few fellow members of Branch 35 have now taken trips from the choices we have presented. We (Ed Pausa and Walter Weber) hope they have enjoyed their experiences and would very much like to have some feedback from them. Also the other members might like to hear how such a trip was. Thank you very much. Learn much more by consulting our Travel Bulletin available at the luncheon Travel Table or on the www.sir35.org website: http://www.closereach.com/sir/newsletters/travel1011.pdf.

At the time of awarding George the "Senior Honorary Life Membership", Big Sir Ken Newton asked George if he had a backup for his parody work. Subsequently, George contacted Bob Simon and Duncan MacVicar, who are interested in this activity and henceforth will participate in parody writing as backups to George. Bob will provide the parody for the November meeting, and Duncan for January.

Two Years on the Trail If you have made it to this message (without skipping!), you have successfully completed the longest issue of Trail Tips to date. And I have completed my predetermined two-year term as the Editor. As Assistant Editor Bob McKenzie and I look back on the trail we have traveled together in delivering the past 21 issues of Trail Tips, we see markers left along the way. Among them:

• First-ever availability of Trail Tips on our Branch 35 website (February 2009) • First issue with color in the Trail Tips masthead and interior pages (March 2009) • First members “Went Green” and discontinued their mailed paper Trail Tips (May 2009) • First issue sent directly to all members with an e-mail address (January 2010) • First April Fools’ prank played on the mission in the Trail Tips masthead (April 2010) * • First month when paper copies were sent only to those members who requested them (June 2010) • First issue where expanding news content crowded out the Officers and Staff listings (July 2010) • First issue in six-page format to rectify the above situation (November/December 2010)

So, with all these “firsts”, what are the differences in Trail Tips between then (two years ago) and now? To summarize: Then Now

News content in each issue: 4 pages 6 pages Publication date each month: 7th-10th 1st

Copies mailed each month (at ~$1.00 apiece): 356 110

Bottom Line: Trail Tips has become larger, faster, and cheaper – what’s not to like?!!!

I want to use the final few of the 3700 words in this issue to thank those who have helped during the past two years to make Trail Tips what it is now. These gentlemen have been indispensable for the following reasons: Jack Dyer and Dick Bray -- Established the consistently high editorial standards for Trail Tips for 10 years(!) before I arrived at the Editor’s desk. Skip Ross -- Promoted and provided instruction and support for the use of the Branch 35 website for distributing and archiving Trail Tips – truly our Web MASTER. Ken Newton -- Directed, via relentless commitment and more than 50 personal phone calls to members, the cultural shift to the predominance of electronic Trail Tips for delivering Branch 35 news. Bob McKenzie – Provided counsel and keen-eyed review to minimize the number of my blunders that appeared in print. Beyond those usual duties of the Assistant Editor, Bob (and Lillian) personally placed every mailing label and every postage stamp on every copy of Trail Tips that has shown up in your mailboxes for the past two years. Bob’s “reward” for such excellent service to the Trail Tips cause is that he will take over as Editor for the coming year, with Norm Pass as his Assistant Editor. If you loyal readers give them the same support you have given me, Trail Tips will continue to be the finest SIR newsletter in the land. Happy trails to all, * http://www.closereach.com/sir/newsletters/e-tt1004.pdf Jim
