From the President

Bonnie McElearney Guild President

One of the many reasons I belong to this Guild is that our members always ‘pay it forward.’ You might remember the October 2000 movie, Pay It Forward, with Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt and Haley Joel Osment, where a young boy attempts to make the world a better place after his teacher gives him a chance.

After the movie debut, random acts of kindness became popular, acknowledging that a little good goes a long way. There are so many ways that guild members pay it forward for others.

I was reminded of that at the August Board meeting when Linda Newman announced that her law firm selected the Search One Rescue Team to receive a grant to buy a new truck to haul their command center. Their command center was purchased with funds from our 2012 Miniature Auction. She was able to promote this non-profit because our Guild took the first step in providing funds.

There are so many ways that each of us can ‘pay it forward’ for each other in small ways. Please continue to:

Keep us informed about your accomplishments, your sunshine and your shadows

Share a quilting tip that could help another member with a project Sew a binding on a ‘cover for a kid’ Bring and brag about a new found treasure or share the story of your new

creation Volunteer your time on a committee Introduce yourself to a new member or visitor and let them know what you like

about being a member

Please share other ways that members have ‘paid it forward’ for you!

Bonnie

HELP US PROMOTE THE SHOW! Guild members served as “ambassadors” for the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo that was held at Will Rogers Memorial Center last fall. We had a good time, so we’re going to do this again. By volunteering (being an ambassador) you can sit in on some of the classes being held at the show, help collect tickets at the door, and other activities to help the event staff. In return, we’ll have booth space provided to promote our Guild and the 2015 Dallas Quilt Show. Such a deal!

Use the link below to access the Ambassador sign-up page on the website. Be sure to indicate that your group affiliation is Quilter’s Guild of Dallas, so we get “credit.”

Dallas Quilt Show

Judy Kriehn,

Vice President, Show

2015 Quilt Show Entry Information begins on Page 15

BIG NEWS! As noted on the previous page, we will be helping out at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo at Will Rogers Auditorium in Fort Worth again this fall. Martha Smith and Megan Martin are coordinating our information booth. (Thanks guys!)

But that’s not the big news… The show staff has invited us to provide 150’ of award-winning quilts to display at the show! That’s essentially 15 sections of pipe and drape to fill with quilted eye candy.

Not only will the exhibit show off the skills of our members and show entrants, but also help us promote the show! I’d like to see us put together a variety of quilts that have previously won an award at the Dallas Quilt Show/Celebration, ranging from the beautiful traditional handwork to colorful modern quilts to inspiring art quilts. From smaller quilts to the big so-called “bed size” quilts. An eclectic variety to reflect how our show celebrates ALL quilts!

If you own a quilt that has won an award at our show and would like it to be considered for this exhibit, please email a digital photo, the title of the quilt, your name and contact information, the dimensions of the quilt (wide x tall), the year it won an award and what award it received to:

Deborah Herring [email protected]

Debbie has agreed to help me pull this exhibit together and deliver the quilts to Fort Worth.

ENTRIES ARE OPEN! As you saw in last month’s newsletter, ENTRIES ARE OPEN! Donna Petrick and her team are ready to start typing those entries into the database.

Key things to remember:

Be sure the photo you include LOOKS LIKE YOUR QUILT. These photos are used during show layout, to decide where to place each quilt so it will look its wonderful best. But when the colors in the photo are incorrect, the photo is so dark you can barely see a quilt in the picture, or the photo is taken from so far away that the quilt cannot be easily seen, it makes the process hard.

Fill out the form ENTIRELY. Since the psychic friends network went out of business, we are just incapable of magically figuring out what should be in a blank space. If you aren’t sure about a given item, drop Donna a line to ask. If she doesn’t know the answer personally, she has a ready team of old-timers to consult.

Top Chef Wannabes Welcome: Donna Bennedetto and Donna Lobelson are still hoping to find some co-chairs for the Staff Lounge committee to learn the ropes so they can take over next year with knives blazing.

My thought is that if a group of five members would take this task on, each person would only have to be “head chef/sammich maker” for ONE DAY of the staff lounge run, so the commitment wouldn’t be quite so scary. SURELY we have some Top Chef or Cutthroat Kitchen wannabes out there who would consider this. I’ll be a very grateful show chairman. Plus – you get a groovy show committee t-shirt for your trouble!

Silver Thimble & Founder’s Award nominations These awards are a special way we honor outstanding Guild volunteers. Silver Thimble nominees have been members for at least three years, and Founder’s Award winners must have been a member for five.

Last year’s Founder’s Award winner, Marcia Hampton, will be collecting the nominations for the awards. Please take the time to send in a nomination for the members you feel are deserving of this special recognition.

Mini Quilt Auction

Bonnie McElearney Mini Quilt Auction Chair

Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation (VMYDF) has been designated the beneficiary for the 2015 Miniature Quilt Auction! The Mini-Auction Committee is excited that VMDYF is our recipient! Founded by area businessmen in 2007, the organization provides educational and enrichment opportunities for the 7500 low income children living in the Vickery Meadow area of Dallas.

The mission of VMYDF is to provide resources and opportunities for the children and youth in the Vickery Meadow neighborhood, allowing them to achieve their full potential.

Mini Auction funds will allow the Foundation to purchase books. Owning your own book is very special so VMYDF provides a book fair for 400 second and third graders. Before summer break, each child chooses 12 books, so they will have one wonderful book to read each week of vacation. Currently, 5200 books are distributed each year. Some donated books are utilized, but funds enable the purchase of new books for the children. Books are purchased for as little as $1.25 - $2.50. The more books, the greater the library the child builds at home for the pleasure of reading. The joy of reading leads to the joy of learning, which may indeed lead to a life beyond poverty. Please go this address to see a video and learn more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?=ZolcNG3GVCs

Also, a reminder that the Mini Quilt Workshop is October18th from 1 - 4 PM, at Quilter’s Connection in Dallas. You will need to make a reservation by calling 214-343-1440. This is a great opportunity to start your Mini for the auction. You will also learn lots of tricks for making a great mini. Look forward to seeing you there! Your Miniature Quilt Committee

Member Block Challenge WINTER CHILL

Dallas Quilt Show 2015

Although in Texas we may not have long, cold winters, we do have our moments; blustery days and occasional ice storms and snow falls.

This year’s theme for the Member Block Challenge Is Winter Chill. Whether you are a piecer or appliquér, this challenge is for you. Your block could depict snow flurries, a blizzard, or a single snow flake design. Or the theme might make you think of your favorite winter outfit, mittens, hat, earmuffs and scarf—or your favorite winter day activity, hot cocoa, snowball fights, or sitting by the fire with a book. Your design should be original. (This is a WINTER quilt, not a holiday quilt, so no holiday themes, please.)

Fabric packets and rules will be available at the October meeting, and may be purchased for $10. When your finished block is returned, the $10 will be refunded to you. Completed blocks must be returned by the February 2015 Guild meeting.

Remember blocks will be on display at the 2015 Quilt Show and will be judged by the show judges for 1st, 2nd,3rd and Honorable Mention awards. The blocks will be used to make the 2015 “Keeper Quilt” for the guild.

Start thinking about WINTER CHILL, and purchase a packet at the Guild meeting.

If you would like to have a packet mailed to you, contact Marcia Wood at [email protected] .

Enjoy quilting with your friends at Linda’s Retreat. Located on 33 acres in Sadler, Texas, we are set up to accommodate 12 enthusiastic quilters. For complete information go to www.createatlindasretreat.com or contact Linda Gray at 817-456-4090.

Community Service—CFK

Mary Howard, 1st VP—Community Service

What is your favorite part when creating a quilt? Pick your favorite and we’ll help you enjoy just that part without having to do whatever is the dull part to you! Like to design and make tops but don’t like to put on those long borders or to make the back? We would be delighted to receive a top ready for a border or two and/or a back! Like to sew the pieces together? We have kits for you! Like to quilt a top but skip the piecing or appliqué step? We have quilt tops that need to be quilted! Like to bind while watching your favorite show (keeps your fingers out of the snack bowl so it is great for those dieting)? We have quilts that need binding! So stop by and see us at the back of the room and we’ll set you up for some quilting fun that will benefit a child or teenager in need of some quilt love. In September we gave Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center 11 quilts, Ronald McDonald 12 quilts and Vogel Alcove 11 quilts. The next Covers For Kids Workshop is Saturday, September 27th, at Hancock’s at Firewheel (on Highway 78/Lavon Dr). We start at 9:30 and officially end about 4:00 or 4:30, but feel free to come for all day or just for a few hours. We generally add borders and make quilt backs. Bring your lunch if you like or join us at a nearby fast food restaurant. We do lunch at 12:30 p.m. Contact Rhonda Anderson at [email protected] to reserve a seat -- as the room is cozy!

Editor’s Note… Especially for friends who are frequent form filler-outers, we have included some fun for you! Beginning on page 11, you’ll find, as follows:

Guild Retreat Info and Form Show Entry Form and Information Show Volunteer Form Quilt Appraisal Form Mini Quilt Auction information and donation form

Notes from a Curator Marian Ann J.

Montgomery, Ph.D. Curator of

Clothing and Textiles, Museum of Texas Tech

University

New Book and Exhibit Features Traditional Quilts

Karey Bresenhan has done wonderful exhibitions and books on so many different genres of quilts. Her upcoming title 500 Traditional Quilts is no exception. Plan to see the exhibition of wonderful new quilts made in a traditional style at the Houston Quilt Festival. Some of the quilts will also be shown at the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange after Festival and also at other International Quilt Festival and Market sponsored shows.

I seldom enter competitions like this, but fellow Guild member Alisa Banks encouraged me to enter—insisted is little more like it, but I’m so glad she did. I was shocked to be accepted into the book and to be invited to show at the Houston Quilt Festival as well as to be part of the traveling exhibition.

I guess I should have had a clue that many liked the quilt when I received the Past President’s Award the year it was shown at the Dallas Quilt Celebration. Anyway, my quilt, Circles of Periwinkle is on page 129 of the book. Ellie Kreneck, a Texas quilt artist I have had the pleasure of getting to know here in Lubbock has had a quilt in another of Karey’s books and said, “We all know our number.” So mine is 129.

(Ed. Note—QGD member Shirley Stevenson also has a quilt featured in the book. If there are others, PLEASE let me know!)

Next month I’ll send images of some of the fabulous quilts we have been inventorying here at the Texas Tech Museum collection. Yes—this is a teaser to read next month’s article!

I hope to see many of you at Festival!

Marian Ann

How Can You Help? You can help to make the auction

an exciting event by donating one (or more!) of your quilted creations or purchasing one or more of the small

works of quilted art. Create an original design, make a mini from your favorite pattern, or perhaps be inspired by the Show Chair’s Theme “Funny Quilts.”

Members of the Guild may turn in their donation forms and quilts at the general meetings or mail them to one of the auction co-chairmen.

The Quilter’s Guild of Dallas, Inc. is a non-profit organization so your donation to the Guild is tax-deductible.* Following the auction, a receipt in the amount of the auctioned price of your donation will be mailed to you.

Rules & Guidelines1 You DO NOT have to be a

member of the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas to donate a miniature to the Miniature Quilt Auction.

2 Your quilt must represent a full-sized quilt. It need not be “to scale,” but must be scaled down.

3 Maximum size for a finished miniature quilt will be 25” square (no one side of a quilt can be larger than 25”).

4 Interior blocks can be no larger than 4”. Please note that exceptions are made for original designs, wholecloth, art quilts and medallion quilts.

On Saturday afternoon, March 14th, at around 1:30 p.m., you will begin hearing the distinctive sounds of an auctioneer* coming from the main entrance to the show. This marks the start of the 22nd annual “live” Miniature Quilt Auction.

Vickery Youth Development Foundation will be the 2015 beneficiary.

5 Designs using fusible products are acceptable, but raw edges of fabric must be appropriately secured; quilting stitches, satin-stitching, or embellishments are examples.

6 DO NOT use fabric paint(s) and/or pens to simulate stitching or otherwise “shortcut” the quiltmaking process.

7 A sleeve must be sewn to the top of the back of the quilt. The finished sleeve must be 2.5” wide by the width of the quilt.

8 Attach a 2” x 3” muslin label to the lower corner on the back side of the quilt. Include your name, year made, name of quilt and any other appropriate information. Information should be stitched or written with a Pigma permanent pen.

9 ALL donations for the live auction must be received by February 20, 2015.

10 An entry form must accompany each submitted quilt. Please include as much information about your quilt as possible, to give the auctioneer “selling points” to use during the sale of your quilt. Feel free to attach an additional sheet of paper if needed.

** Typically, your deduction for the quilt donation is limited to materials costs only. In other words, you can’t deduct “fair market value.”
