MAYOR’S MESSAGE Happy New Year to all our residents and I wish you good health and prosperity in the year to come.
This week the Minister for Planning Rob Stokes announced a set of reforms to NSW planning laws intended to streamline development approval processes. According to the Minister, the proposed reforms will greatly assist in meeting the demands of the housing market, particularly in Sydney.
The proposed reforms include Investigating incentives for developers to consult with neighbours and the surrounding community to ensure disputes are resolved before a DA is assessed and extending the complying development assessment process to include greenfield developments and terrace housing. Other reforms on the table include widening the availability of review options as an alternative to court action and introducing planning agreements between developers and councils to ensure transparency on funding for public amenities, affordable housing, transport and other infrastructure.
The reforms are open for public comment until March and I encourage everyone in our community with an interest to make a submission. You can review the proposed reforms and make a comment via www.planning.nsw.gov.au
Next week I will have the pleasure of opening another new playground and park in Ku-ring-gai. Lapwing Reserve at Carcoola Road St Ives is the latest addition to the
Council’s portfolio of new parks created through the strategic acquisition of sites funded by development contributions. This award-winning acquisition policy has ensured that our Council is taking account of population increases and the needs of our rapidly diversifying population, as more and more young families move into Ku-ring-gai. The official opening takes place from 10.30am next Tuesday 17 January and everyone is welcome to attend and see the great new playground and nearly 2000 square metres of new parkland we are providing for our community.
More celebrations will be taking place on Thursday 26 January as Ku-ring-gai marks Australia Day. As is now customary, the Council will host our Australia Day event at Bicentennial Park West Pymble between 10.30am and 1.30pm. We have the SplashDance duo from ABC Kids as our special guests, bush band Reel Matilda, cultural dance performances and an Australian reptile show. Enjoy games and amusement rides, sheep shearing, sheep dog demonstrations and roaming performances with your family and if you are wanting to continue with the celebrations, the Ku-ring-gai Fitness and Aquatic Centre is hosting pool entertainment and activities in the afternoon.
I hope to see you there!
