YEAR 5 DYFFRYN TRANSITION DAY
The Year 5 pupils were invited to a Technology Day in Dyffryn Comprehensive School on Monday 30th November. This Transition Day is always eagerly awaited as the children get to make lots of things for Christmas. Here is what they had to say …
“First we got there and all the schools went in the hall.
Then we went to our classrooms. My first one was gift bags and cards in the basement. First we made the cards
and then we saw a laser cutter. The cutter cut out bags ready for us to make. Next we had a break. After break
we made the bags, then we all went back to the hall for
food. Finally I made
Christmas decorations. It was great. I want to go
again.” (Morgan S)
“We got to choose a selection of activities to do throughout the day. We did two each. The overall favourite activity
was a desk tidy which will hold pencils. We all enjoyed our selves and we would like to go there again.” (Madeline)
“I enjoyed doing the gift bags and cards, also being shown how a laser cutter works and watching it cut out the bags.
The other activity I did was to make a desk tidy. This activity was making a pencil holder out of wood. You also got to pick two colours. I
chose blue and green. My over all favourite was the desk tidy. We had a brilliant day and
when we got back to school we all agreed that we would love to go again.” (Ethan)

YEARS 5 & 6 SCREAM MACHINE
All the children in Years 5 and 6 took part in a ‘Design your own Scream Machine’ challenge. The children worked in groups and had to design their own roller coaster ride. First they decided on the concept, then they had to plan and draw out their designs. Finally, they had to build a 3D working model of their ride. Here are a few of their comments ...
“Nemo’s Coaster—we chose Nemo’s Coaster because we thought that it was a lot
different to the other groups. We built our roller coaster with a foam door
lining, cardboard box, tic tac box, wood, string and paper. We really enjoyed
learning about forces, we also liked designing and making our ride.” (Tegan,
Ieuan, Lucas and Gemma)
“Rapunzel’s Adventure—We chose Rapunzel
because we had a good idea for the drop being
Rapunzel’s hair. Our theme is Rapunzel coming
out of her tower and going on a wild, crazy adventure. We built the roller
coaster with cardboard, boarder strips and bottles and so much more. We made
posters and leaflets with lots of eye catching colours and writing. We also made
an advert to show everybody how our machine worked. We learned a lot about KE
and PE—KE is when something is about to start and PE is when it is
moving.” (Anabel, Xanthe, Hannah and Madison)
“The days of Disney—We made our roller coaster with thin sheets of metal and
bent into shape using a hammer. We used other pieces of metal to make a tower.
Out ride was made in two halves, the second half by getting four metal bars for
the tower and metal mesh for the track. We wanted to show people how Disney
had changed over the years to what it looks like now.” (Ben, Josh, Rhys, Carwyn
and Oliver)
“Arials Aquatic Adventure—We decided on our name as we thought it would be an
eye catching alliteration. Our design was a deserted Pirate Ship under water
with detailed planks, scrunched up bits of green and yellow paper for seaweed and
sand and a blue and yellow track. We designed it in 1cm and to make our 3D
model we had to up-scale it from 1cm to 10cm.” (Connor, Ewan, Drew and Finley)
“Jungle Book—our roller coaster was based on
the Jungle Book. We chose this because it
was a theme that we all enjoyed. We used wood and a type of plastic for the
track. We decorated it using paint and cardboard. We used boxes at the end
of the track so the ball does not come off the end. We put lots of
decorations to make people come to our roller coaster. We were a bit nervous
when people asked us questions.” (Scarlet, Maiya, Megan and Harleen)
YEARS 5 & 6 SCREAM MACHINE
“Aladdin’s Magic Carpet—We came up with the idea because everyone likes the
film. We all wanted to ride on a magic carpet. Jess brought in a simple roller
coaster and we painted, mended and presented it to the judges, Mr. James and
Mrs. Comley. We predominantly learnt trial and error, different forces and
working as a team.” (Abigail, Ashleigh, Sophie and Megan)
“Frozen—We decided to do frozen because
it’s coming up to Christmas and we thought it
would make a good setting. Because frozen
is such a popular film, people liked our idea so they voted for us. We had the
most votes in the competition. We made our track out of piping solution and we
stuck two cardboard boxes together to keep our roller coaster in
place.” (Sophie, Ashlee, Megan and Abigail)
“Diamond Burner—We did a presentation for our roller coaster and we had to
try and persuade the Disney Committee to choose us. We spent a lot of time
making and creating our model.” (Cara and Brooke)
“Thunder Thump—Charlie and I took part in a
scream machine event. We had to create a
presentation to advertise our ride Thunder
Thump to go into the Disney Committee 2015. We won the most
voters.” (Charlie and Kit)
“The Griffway— We presented the Griffway
to the Disney Committee. We used a presentation on HWB. When we
presented it to the Disney Committee we were very nervous because we had to
go first.” (Morgan and Morgan)
“Crazy Spray—Last Friday we made a scream
machine and a powerpoint presentation which
we showed to Mr. James and Mrs. Comley.
We also showed our model to the teachers.” (Mollie and Crystal)
“Night Hawk—We had to show our presenta-
tion for our scream machine to Mr. James
and Mrs. Comley. We had a great time and we won for the best presentation
and overall concept model. (Enzo and Luke)
“The Slide of Doom—Last Friday we presented our scream machine in front of Mrs. Comley and Mr. James. We went and looked at the other Year 5’s models and the Year 6’s models
and voted for our favourite. The overall winners were Enzo and Luke. The winner that we voted for was Charlie and Kit.” (Poppy, Grace and Amelie)
“Phantom Fun—Ethan and myself designed a ride called Phantom Fun. Our favourite part about it is the paint,
because it is colourful. We had to present our powerpoint to Mrs. Comley and Mr. James.” (Ethan and Adam)
“The Body of Terror—Last Friday me and Emma made a
scream machine out of recycled bits and bobs, cardboard and plastics. Unfortunately our first scream machine did not go well, but we made a new
one. We also made a powerpoint which was seven slides long and we had to present it to
Mr. James and Mrs. Comley.” (Emma and Farrah)
“Cloud Puff—Year 5 & 6 switched classes to see each other’s scream machines, but one of us had to stay on the stall.
After that we had to vote for a group. Then we went into singing but Morgan and Morgan went in to do their presentation. They came back and called
a different group to go in. At the end Mr. James and Mrs. Comley called out the winners and Mickey Mouse gave the prizes out.” (Libby and Ella)
“The Pom Bomber—Last Friday we presented our presentation to Mrs. Comley and Mr. James and we did a little stall and we also showed our concept model to everybody in
Year 6 and the rest of Year 5.” (Shelby and Maddie)
“Swirls of Doom—Our presentation for our topic scream machine was in front of Mr. James the Year 6 teacher and
our teacher, Mrs. Comley. Our machine was called Swirls of Doom. We spent a lot of time making our presentation
and model.” (Isobel and Amy)
“Smile—Last Friday Years 5 and 6 did presentations for our roller coasters. Alice and I did not win, but we think we did very well. Our ride was called
‘Smile’ because we like to see the smile’s on people’s faces. We put a lot of work into our roller coaster because we wanted to be more part of the competition.” (Isabell and Alice)
Then on Friday 27th November the children showed their creations to each other and to the judges and, using the ‘Pupils Voice’, they held a secret ballot to vote on
whose designs they thought were the best.
As you can see from the pictures above every group was extremely inventive and produced some excellent work. A presentation was held in the school hall and prizes given to the winners.
Congratulations to you all on some magnificent work!
