•A push or a pull on an object

•Causes a change in the motion of an object

•The combination of all forces on an object

•Measured in Newtons (N)

Friction

• The force that causes a moving object to slow down when it touches another object

•One object rubbing against another



Speed• Speed is a way of measuring how quickly something is moving or being done.

• Ex. - A motorcycle going 55 miles per hour

• Ex. – Sweeping the floor for 5 minutes



Velocity

The rate at which an object changes position in a specific direction

Ex: 35mph west



AccelerationThe rate at which an object changes its speed or direction (speeding up, slowing down, or changing direction)

Ex.1 – Downhill on a rollercoaster

Ex.3 - Turning a corner even if your speed stays the same



Applied ForceA force that is applied to an object by a person or another object

Ex. – A person pushing a box up a ramp

•An English physicist and mathematician in the1600’s

•One of the most influential scientists of all time

• Formulated the three basic laws of motion (Newton's Laws of Motion)



Newton’s First Law or Law of Inertia• Inertia – a tendency to

do nothing or remain unchanged

• An object at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force.

Ex. - Sitting on a couch

• For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
