1. Get with a partner

2. The teacher will assign each pair a topic: balanced force, unbalanced force, or net force.

3. The students will demonstrate their understanding of the concept to which they have been assigned.

4. The students can use props in the room or the white board to explain their type of force to the class. Get creative!

•One object rubbing against another

Speed• Speed is a way of measuring how quickly something is moving or being done.

• Ex. - A motorcycle going 55 miles per hour

• Ex. – Sweeping the floor for 5 minutes

Sir Isaac Newton

•An English physicist and mathematician in the1600’s

•One of the most influential scientists of all time

• Formulated the three basic laws of motion (Newton's Laws of Motion)

Newton’s First Law or Law of Inertia• Inertia – a tendency to

do nothing or remain unchanged

• An object at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force.

Ex. - Sitting on a couch

Newton’s First Law (Cont.)

An object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and direction until acted on by an unbalanced force.

Ex. - A satellite orbiting Earth

when a force acts on a mass.

• The greater the mass of the

object being accelerated the

greater the amount of force

needed to accelerate the

object.

Newton’s Third Law (Cont.)

How does Newton’s Third Law relate to the Earth’s plate movements?

Unbalanced forces create earthquakes, volcanoes, rift valleys and other geological features when plate are under tension.
