A VIRGINIA FAMILY AND ITS PLANTATION HOUSESElizabeth Langhorne, K. Edward Lay, and William D. Rieley

"It is rare to find a work that interweaves familyhistory with that of the home and garden. This volumedoes just that, recognizing that gardens, landscapes andhouses did not arise in a vacuum but rather against acomplex backdrop of life as it really was. The authorshave done a commendable job in their detailed researchand commentary along with drawings illustrating thehouses and gardens. Perhaps this book will be a modelfor others to come." --Rudy J. Favretti, ASLA, Land-scape Historian and Architect.

’% Virginia Family and Its Plantation Houses is amulti-faceted study--appropriately by a historian, anarchitect/preservationist, and a landscape architect--ofthe origins and evolution of the interrelationship be-tween a specific family and the complex and not unso-phisticated domestic working precincts they built for

themselves in the wilderness of the Virginia Piedmont. And at a time when the sources of American urbanismare being critically reinvestigated, particularly the cen-tral and iconic role of the single family house freestanding in the landscape." -Jaquelin T. Robertson,FAIA, AICP, Dean, School of Architecture, Universityof Virginia.

This book details the history of twelve houses thatwere built and occupied by four generations of oneVirginia family. Based on information found in familyaccount books, tax lists, wills, and personal letters, thiswork provides answers to questions about how thehouses were built, how they were financed, how theyfunctioned, and how they related to the land and socialneeds of the period.September 1987. 176 pages, 83 b&w illus. $27.50

The Modern UrbanLandscape~88o to the Present

Edward Relph W hY do the cities of the late twentiethcentury look as they do? For Edward

Relph, the urban landscape must be envisionedas a total environment--not just streets andbuildings but billboards and parking meters aswell. With copious illustrations, The ModernUrban Landscape traces developments since 1880in architecture, technology, planning, and societythat have created the visual context of daily life.

Notions of internationalism and self-consciousness have been especially influential,Relph argues. As cities have moved away fromstyles reflecting local customs and traditions, anemphasis on analysis and technical manipulationhas emerged. "The modern urban landscape isboth rationalized and artificial," he writes, "whichis another way of saying that it is intensely human."

HUMANSCAPE:Environments For Peopleby Stephen Kaplan and Rachel Kaplan

HUMANSAPE provides a unique perspective on humans and their relationship to the environ-ment. It provides an information processing point of view, but one that is more synthetic than istraditional. Here, territory and privacy, stress and coping, even aesthetics, are related within aninformational framework.HUMANSCAPE deals with the uncertain environment in which humans find themselves and viewsthis uncertainty as both a problem and a challenge. For while uncertainty brings with it the threatof confusion, it can also provide the opportunity to test one’s skills, to venture, to explore.
