PRINCIPAL’S REPORTPRINCIPAL’S REPORT

EXCURSIONS

The Year 9 class visited Monarto Zoo last

week to study Biomes.

There is a separate report in this

Newsletter but I wanted to highlight the

importance of excursions in linking

learning to real-world concepts.

I know that parents often feel that they

are always paying for activities and the

students are “never in school”.

Making learning ‘real’ and providing

activities that engage students in their

learning is much more important than

watching a teacher ‘perform’ at the front

of the classroom.

Please keep supporting these initiatives

and we will continue to work hard at

minimising costs.

UNIFORM

As the cold weather has hit us suddenly

there has been an alarming number of

students not wearing correct school

uniform.

Uniform is an indication of pride in the

school and a willingness to engage in

developing harmony and a sense of

belonging.

Uniform reduces conflict in the home and

at school. There are less decisions to be

made in the morning and fewer

opportunities for students to bully or

segregate based on fashion.

School Council has recently reaffirmed its

commitment to the Uniform Policy and

has introduced undershirts within the

policy to cater for the cold weather. They

are available through the uniform shop in

Mount Barker.

Teachers will be clamping down on

students wearing inappropriate clothing

and will be asking students to change

into a school-supplied uniform or sending

students home to change.

BUSES

Thank you to the parents who have made

comment about the bus services

currently provided by the Department.

We are continuing to collate responses

and will be forwarding them to the

Transport Division so that they can make

a final determination about the

configuration of our services based on

the information provided.

If you have not already done so, please

read the previous newsletter and respond

to my request regarding your demand for

a school bus service.

SEMESTER 2 TIMETABLES

Lawrie Cresp and the School Leadership

group have been working on the

Semester 2 timetable paying particular

attention to the clustering of teachers in

the Middle School.

Students who have constructive

relationships with their teachers are more

likely to do well at school, and teachers

who actively build such relationships

have a strong effect on the lives of their

students.

For this reason, we are focussing on

getting the best mix of teachers allowing

time for developing relationships whilst

still having specialist teachers teaching

their subject area.

Some students are already anxious about

the change in teachers. At this stage

there have been no decisions made.

Please be patient and we will

communicate changes to parents before

the end of the semester.

As part of our Year 9 Geography Course this term we are studying Biomes (landscapes

and ecosystems) with a particular emphasis on grasslands. Part of the curriculum

requires students to study the effects of fauna and flora living within an ecosystem, the

distribution of animals, and the rejuvenation of the vegetation within the biome.

On Thursday 8 June, Year 9 Geography students attended an all day excursion to

Monarto Zoological Park to observe how animals and birds interact in natural and

manmade biomes, such as the endangered Mallee Fowl.

Whilst on the excursion students were required to take notes about grassland Biomes

and the fauna they encountered. They also completed a booklet on Mallee forest

rejuvenation; observing geographical concepts used in real life situations. Students

asked many questions of the Zookeeper while on our bus tour of the carnivore and

herbivore animals found at Monarto.

We saw many animals including: Lions, Cheetahs, the Painted Dogs, Hyenas, White and

Black Rhinoceros, Giraffes, Bison and a range of African and Australian fauna. Students

also really enjoyed their time observing the Chimps and Meerkats in their enclosures,

and their extremely playful antics.

The students will now develop a flow chart describing animal interaction in a

Savannah or Grassland Biome and research the work of Monarto Zoo Geographers and

Biologists in creating sustainable environments for a range of endangered species.

Over 600 teenagers are injured on our roads each year.

Together we can do something about it!

Are you the person most likely to provide much of the initial driver

education for your child?

South Australia Police have developed a longer-term

approach which can be delivered as part of the

Year 10 Science Curriculum.

Next term we are extremely fortunate to have presenters from SAPOL deliver:

FOR PARENTS and CAREGIVERS: Information night for our community Monday 24

July 6:30-7:15pm. (This is the start of Term 3, but is a student-free day)

FOR YEAR 10 STUDENTS: A double lesson session at school, with driving simulators

and experienced crash investigators on Tuesday 25 July from 11am-1pm (This is

the first day of school in Term 3)

We won’t show graphic images or tell horror stories. Instead, in 45 minutes, you will

receive some serious, common-sense advice that you won’t find in the Learner Driv-

er Hand Book.

Let’s work together to increase the safety of your child as they

prepare to enter the road network.

We are passionate about making a difference to your child’s education both in and

out of school and believe this experience links school learning to community and

family lives.

Next week you will receive an invitation/ consent form via email and also

as a hard copy sent home with your child.

This consent form is to be returned as an indication of numbers and

permission for your child to attend.

If you have any concerns or questions please contact us at school for a chat.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Do you know how to strengthen their driving experiences?

Do you know how to reduce the incidence of crashing or

change the severity of the outcome?

Are you really prepared for the task of supervising a novice driver?

Have you kept up-to-date with Road Rule changes?

Do you know what to look for in a driving instructor?

On Thursday 1 June, Oakbank Area School's Year 8/9 Girls Netball team travelled to

Mount Barker to compete against our local opposition schools of Unity, St Francis, Hills

Christian, Birdwood and Glossop High Schools.

Our team consisted of Year 9 girls: Amber Begonja, Danielle Bellman, Amber McCann

and Kailey Matthews. Year 8 girls and team captain: Olivia Rule, Daley Hill, and Year 7

girls: Zara Macpherson and Acacia Mahlo.

Our first game was against Birdwood. We found it hard to find our rhythm, but the girls

kept their heads up for the entire 4 quarters, and kept fighting against a well-oiled

opposition. Our second game was against Unity College, where we were once again

defeated. This game was much tighter with our defence maintaining pressure throughout

and our goalies shooting very well under pressure.

Our closest game was against Hills Christian where we only went down by 4 goals. It was

the best game played all day and you could feel the girls’ passion to win. Our final two

games were against St Francis and Glossop, but due to an injury we played with one of

the Glossop girls on our team. It was the funniest match of the day and the girls really

worked hard against a skilled opposition.

All games were played with two, 12 minute halves, with 3 points for a win and 1 point for

a loss. Glossop High School were clear winners on the day, with no defeats. The girls

can be very proud of the way they represented the school. It was an absolute pleasure

to spend the day with them and watch their support and encouragement of each other,

and the other teams on the day.

I would like to thank Janet for getting us there and back safely on the school bus. A

huge thank you also goes to our Year 10 umpires/scorers Tiarn Wegener and Lauryn

Rogers. A final thank you goes to Emily Zaccaria and Shane Wissell for their help with the

organisation of this event.

Late on Thursday 25 May, I received a call from an acquaintance at the South

Australian National Football League (SANFL) enquiring as to whether Oakbank Area

School could take the place of another school who had pulled out of an AFL

competition at late notice. The competition was on the following Tuesday so it didn't

give us much time to commit, get a team organised and to get students to collect

and return all of the required paperwork.

It was, however, too good of an opportunity to let slip and fortunately we were able

to meet the challenge. It made it a bit easier knowing that the competition was to

be held at Football Park and run by Crows representatives, the bus was being

supplied free of charge by the Crows, a free BBQ and drinks were being provid-

ed and students were going to get a tour of all the Crows facilities. Students liked

these points and jumped on board.

On Tuesday May 30, Oakbank Area School sent a group of boys off to participate

in the 9-a-side AFL competition at Football Park at West Lakes.

Our team consisted of Ryan Todd, Tyson Harris, Ash Zulian, Harry Maider, Christian

Laughlin, Jackson Sziller, Mikey Cutting, Patrick Bailey, Brodie Tischer, Oliver Askew

and Jake MacAuley.

Other schools that the boys played against were Seaview High, Seaton High,

Salisbury High and Blackfriars College. We were successful in defeating Seaview

High School and were competitive against all of the other schools without actually

defeating them. Our best player on the day as judged by the umpires and Crows

officials was Tyson Harris.

The scoreboard wasn't the most important part of this experience, everything else

was. The students got a behind the scenes tour, met some male and female Crows

players as well as a run around on Football Park, an oval which has been such an

integral venue for some magical moments of South Australian football history. This

was a once in a lifetime opportunity and the boys can be truly proud that they got to

be involved in it.

A big thank you to Mr Cresp, a Crows diehard, for volunteering to travel with the

team and manage them during their 4 games during the day. By all reports he did a

super job. Also a big thankyou to the students who made up the team at late notice.

Their behaviour was exceptional and who knows, the impression they left on the

organisers may result in a return invitation next year.

For coming in so late and assisting the competition to be a success, the school

received a full sized match AFL football signed by Crows coach Don Pyke and

Captain Tex Walker. The school will be able to utilise this memorabilia in future

fundraising endeavours. Well done to all.

On Friday 2 June, Oakbank Area School hosted students from Blackfriars College

and Swan Reach Area School for

an Open Boys Badminton round robin

competition.

Oakbank's team consisted of Jay

Tebble, Cameron Rule, Michael Querido,

Luke Amuso, Harley Nicholls and Connor

Mansell.

We started the day with a match against

Blackfriars. We played 4 doubles and 4

singles against them. They were far too

strong for us winning all of the doubles

and 3 of the singles, therefore defeating

us 7-1. Cameron was our successful

player winning his singles 21-16, 21-19. A

lot of sets were competitive in other games with Jay and Cameron in

particular losing a very close one 21-19, 21-19. Blackfriars then went on to defeat

Swan Reach 8-0.

We completed the day playing Swan Reach in a dead rubber, but with plenty of

pride on the line. We defeated them 6-2 winning our 4 doubles and 2 of the singles.

A particular highlight was Jay who was dominant in his singles 21-8, 21-2 and he

also won both of his doubles with Michael 21-5, 21-10 and with Harley 21-12, 21-6.

Luke won a tough 3 setter 21-17, 19-21, 21-5 which was great viewing.

On Wednesday June 6, Oakbank Area School hosted St Francis College and The

Hills Christian Community School for an Open Girls Basketball round robin

competition.

The Oakbank team consisted of Alice Perkins, Caitlyn Taskas, Marlee Tonkin, Sarah

Garvin, Shai-Leigh Tischer, Sianah Bonilla and Tiarn Wegener.

We began the day against HCCS and went down 36pts to 34pts after being in front at

every break. It was an evenly contested game of Basketball, a pleasure to be a part

of. Unfortunately a lot of our shots just wouldn't drop. This was especially the case in

the last 30 seconds when we had opportunities to get level or in front but couldn't

sink the basket. Highest scorers for this game were Tiarn with 11, Alice with 8 and

Marlee with 7. Sarah was also over the

moon when she scored her first goal for the

day.

We then watched St Francis destroy HCCS

84pts to 20pts with most of the HCCS points

coming in the last quarter.

We knew we were up against it when we

played St Francis but to the girls credit they

played with the right attitude and still

enjoyed the competition and interactions

with each other. The final score was 90pts to

14pts.

Top scorers were Tiarn with 5 and Shai-Leigh with 4. A particular highlight for this

game was Sianah scoring her first points for the day and being cheered on by her

brother who was amongst the loud and supportive crowd in attendance during the

schools lunch break.

Oakbank and HCCS are well suited for the B grade division, St Francis should

probably be playing in the higher division.

The girls were a pleasure to coach and were great ambassadors for Oakbank on the

day. A big thanks must also go to Kye Sinnott for taking on the scoring duties and to

our external umpire Aaron Newman.
