LITERACY CHALLENGE

January 31st-February 7th was Storytelling Week, we decided to have a literacy challenge.

We all did a challenge in teams and the challenge was making interesting sentences using different words from dif-ferent categories. The categories were Horror, Romantic, Funny , Magical and Adventure. Al lot of the words on the

tables were adjectives. We were given 2 minutes to choose some words and then to think of a sentence. If we did-n’t have words we wanted we could write them down and use them.

It was really fun and helped us to make our sentences more interesting. Hannah K.

Some of us watched and listened to a video called The Storyteller. It was good to learn what was happening. There were lots of different stories. Simon

The dancers have been very busy as you can see from the front cover. They are currently learning a new routine and will be performing in front of the whole school on Wednesday25th March.

RED NOSE DAY

We made funny face pizzas and we all played dodgeball in the hall. We

did some Comic Relief wordsearches and spot the difference sheets. We had a buffet lunch. We made some fairy cakes and decorated

them with faces. We took some home. I loved it, we had a good time. Kaela

We all came in wearing red clothes. We played games and we made

pizza in teams. We had a buffet and the day was fun. People had fac-es painted and some people had make up. Hannah A

I really enjoyed Red Nose Day because I got dressed up in red for charity. We raised money to give to poor people in Africa to get them

beds and medicine to keep well. Ashleigh On red nose day we wore a red nose and red clothes. In the morning

we made funny face pizzas, we played dodgeball and did the dough-

nut challenge. We had to lie on the floor and eat the doughnuts with-out using our hands. The doughnuts were on a piece if string. Olivia

I played dodgeball which was good. I did the doughnut challenge. I had to lay on the floor and eat the doughnut without using my hands.

It was easy. All the students had their photo taken then the pictures

were cut into 3 pieces. We mixed up the pictures to make silly faces. Jade

I enjoyed the doughnut challenge and making the funny face pizzas. Harry

I got my face painted by Toby. He made me look like a leopard. It was fantastic. My team used peppers, olives, tomatoes, cucumber and

mozzarella cheese to make a pizza face. The day was fun. Tom L

We made funny pictures of faces on pizzas. We used different ingredi-ents like peppers, olives, pepperoni, mushrooms and big tomatoes.

We did the doughnut challenge. It was funny because we couldn’t use our arms or hands. Jamie

We all had to dress up in red and we all did activities that were really

silly. I read out a poem about where all the money goes to. The day was really good. Stephanie

I did a wordsearch,

the doughnut challenge

and I was in a team to make pizzas. The pizzas

had a funny face. We ate them for our lunch.

Simon

We raised

A massive £120!!!

We went up to the hall to

play some games. We watched some videos that

told us what Comic Relief spent the money on and how

it helped people.

Travel Training and Road Safety Year 1

We sometimes go to the train station and learn

how to use tickets and oyster cards. We learn how to read information boards and we go to different

places every week. Louisa I am learning about how to travel safely. Sam

I have enjoyed travel training because I like doing

things for myself and like catching the bus and train. Ashleigh

On the days we have been out travel training we have been on trains and buses. We go and pay for

our fare and get our ticket. We look at the boards to see when the train is coming. Tom D

We go to the bus stop and look for information. We

find out the number of the bus. We use oyster cards. We have been on trains and a tram. I had

never been on a tram before. I had to stand up. I have been to Banstead, Oxted and, IKEA in Purley.

Jade

I use the oyster card on buses and buy my own ticket for the train. At the information board at

Redhill bus station you find out the time and num-ber of the bus. We have been to Oxted and Gat-

wick. When we went to Gatwick we looked at signs that were pictures and had to decide what the pic-

tures meant. Harry

When we went to Oxted we used the information board to get a train at 11.10am. We walked down

the high street and had lunch in Costa’s we also met Tom L’s mum. We used our tickets to go back

to Redhill, it was quite a journey but I had a lot of

fun and it was good for my learning skills and for my independence too. Toby

We went to Croydon by bus and train. We are learning about buying tickets, what times to catch a

bus or train, we look at boards. Sometimes we use

oyster cards. Tom L

THIS GROUP WILL RESUME TRAVEL TRAIN-

ING WHEN THEY COME BACK IN SEPTEMBER.

ADDITIONS TO THE CURRICULUM

CITIZENSHIP With all the accredited courses now complete, we have the opportunity to add new sessions to the timeta-ble,. All students are working on Citizenship. Students have been considering what makes a good citizen. These are some of their thoughts Helpful, honest, responsible, reliable, law abiding, trustworthy, good manners, caring, sensi-ble, friendly, kind, thoughtful, volunteering, understanding. With the election so close, they have also begun to think about elections and voting. Looking at what de-mocracy means, who governs us, who makes rules and laws, how we vote and who can vote, etc. It will make for some very interesting learning and we hope you might hear about it at home. Accredited courses that we do that also cover many aspects of Citizenship and British Values are: Rights and Responsibilities, Choices and Decisions, Managing Social Relationships, Environmental Awareness, Preparing For Work. The Environmental Awareness group took a walk through our local area to see what was good or bad for the envi-ronment. Each student took pictures as we went. There was quite a lot of rubbish about and dog mess on the

ground. We saw cars which cause air pollution. But we also saw quite a few bins, a large recycling area and trees in

the parks which help clean our air and give homes to wildlife. The group hope to arrange an activity to help the environment, they have voted to do a litter pick in the local area.

It is great to see the students identifying environmental concerns around them and things they can do to help. Genia

NEW AND EXCITING WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES!!

Just this week staff took year 13 students to the very nice café in Reigate Priory Park to meet with Helen. Helen

works for Reigate and Banstead parks department and has not only offered students the opportunity to work along-side her in the park but also introduced us to the manager of the café who is also very happy to trial some students

for work experience there. This is fantastic as it extends our work experience choices. Helen has also invited students to attend a proper training session the first week back from our Easter break. Real

training for real work. Anyone working outside will also be wearing a high viz jacket with volunteer clearly written

on it. It gets better, there is also the possibility that all students can participate in litter picking (great for citizen-ship and community work) and pond dipping a little later in the year. We are delighted to have been given these

chances and naturally would hope they will be successful and continue in September when our current year 12 stu-dents can also take advantage. Thanks also to Genia and Sue who have made this possible.

I would also take this opportunity to remind families and carers, that if they are aware of any potential wok experi-ence and can accommodate access, we would support where possible. Thanks also to Genia and Sue who have

made this possible.

Dear Families As you will have seen, this has been yet another action packed term. The successes enjoyed have played a very important part in the growing maturity, confidence and personal growth that we continue to witness. The students have responded positively to all their new experiences and the learning opportuni-ties offered. Next term will also be extremely busy. We are having a designated week of assessment which will commence Monday 11th May and will be solely for those students who are leaving in July. I would really appreciate it if all those students involved could avoid any appointments during that week to ensure their presence and successful undertaking of their assessments. We have our residential week in July and will be looking at activities that we might like to under-take. Fingers crossed we will also be very busy working in Reigate Priory. In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy a restful break. Have a good Easter.
