Also below are the results of the 2018 House Competition, and the names of the House Leaders and Deputies for 2018 - congratulations to all those students. Senior Prizegiving - is our most formal and significant ceremony of the year, and an important opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate our students’ academic, service and leadership achievements. The pinnacle of the senior prizegiving is the Wayfarer (Real Journeys) Dux Award to our highest academic achiever. This year it was a pleasure to announce our Head Girl, Bianca Crichton as the Dux of WHS for 2018. Following a wonderful haka to honour her, Bianca delivered a powerful valedictory speech - another in a long line of great WHS Dux speeches. We do know just how hard many of our students work and how well-deserved many of these awards are and so we have included the lists of prizewinners below - congratulations to them all. Cultural Blues - on Tuesday evening was a fantastic and fun event. Opening with the amazing exhibition of students’ art is always a great way to kickoff this night. Vacancy at WHS

We are seeking a fixed-term, part-time Student Records Officer through until December 2019. This role is 30 hours per week (9.30am - 4pm), Monday-Friday during term time only.

This key role in the support staff team is to carry out student information-related data entry, management and reporting using the school’s paper-based and electronic student management systems. This includes following procedures to create and modify records for new enrolments and current students, verifying data and producing reports for the senior leadership team. There will also be a general administration element to the position, including occasional reception cover and other office duties.

This position requires strong organisation, typing and data entry skills, attention to detail, confidentiality, privacy, and the ability to work with students, staff and parents/caregivers.

Applicants should send a CV and covering letter to [email protected] by 9.00am Monday 12th November.

Andrea Wilton-Connell, Executive Officer

Duke of Edinburgh Tramp

Last weekend, a group of Duke of Edinburgh bronze and silver participants went on a tramp up into the Mutukituki valley. On the first day, we tramped up to a camping spot in the mountains near the Mt Aspiring Hut. When we arrived we set up our tents and managed to cook our meals on our camping stoves despite the strong winds. The next morning we woke to a light shower of rain and a bitter cold. We packed up and the bronze participants got ready to walk back out, while the silver participants had another day of tramping before they walked out. A highlight for me was the stunning views of the valley and the biggest challenge I faced was probably trying to cook a packet of mac and cheese without properly reading the instructions (we got there in the end). All in all, it was a great trip and thank you so much to all the teachers who came with us and organised the trip, your help is very much appreciated.

Jasmine Crichton, Year 10

Sports Report - Week 3

Rugby Sevens - Otago Girls u15 SquadCongratulations to Alicia Robert, Anika Moetaua and Kasey Bonn who have all been named in the under 15 Otago Sevens Girls Rugby Squad. These girls will be travelling to Dunedin 3 days a week for training sessions and matches with the team. We look forward to keeping up with your results girls, well done!

Golf - South Island Interprovincial Team Tournament Well done to Callum Judkin for being named as number 4 in the 8 man Mens Otago Team to play in Methven at the interprovincial tournament over the weekend. The team had mixed results with wins against Aorangi and Southland and losses against Tasman and Canterbury. Awesome effort Callum.

Cycling - Junior Tour of Southland Awesome effort from Oliver Watson-Palmer at the Junior Tour of Southland. His overall place for Under 15 boys was 5th and was 1 minute 25 seconds behind the Tour winner. In recognition for his overall efforts in the Tour he was the rider presented with the $1 Award. Each year during the Yunca Junior Tour of Southland, the Chief Commissaire (Judge) selects the rider over the whole three-day tour who he deemed featured strongly throughout the event. This was by just missing out on making the podium or winning sprints or King of the Mountain stages. Oliver battled very competitively during the event and due to his constant, combative riding he just missed finishing at the top of the Under 15 boys. He was presented the $1 Award in recognition of his overall efforts.

Oliver Watson-Palmer

Cricket - District Secondary Schools Girls Tournament Kloe Vermeir, Paige Loggenberg & Lucy Viggers were selected and played for the Otago Country Secondary School Girls team this past weekend in the District Secondary School Girls Tournament in Dunedin. They played 3 games, won 2 and lost 1. The last game was rained out and they came second by default to Dunedin.

All 3 girls did well with bowling. Kloe took 4 wickets over the tournament (best was 3/9), while Paige took 2/7 and a catch and Lucy took 2 (best 1/6). Paige also did well with the bat, highest scoring in the last game (19 runs) and second highest overall for the tournament.

Mountain Biking - New Zealand Downhill Series Round 2Well done to Max Caulton who competed in the 2018 NZDH SERIES Round 2 in Wellington on a steep and wet “K Hole” Trail in Karori, winning the Under 15 Boys category. An awesome effort in some testing conditions, keep it up Max!

Southland Secondary Schools Sports Awards Congratulations to Alice Robinson for winning the Senior Female Sports Person of the Year Award at the Southland Secondary School Sports Awards. Alice was attending our own Sports Blues Awards, so was unfortunately not able to be there in person to receive this extremely well deserved award for her efforts and achievements in Alpine Skiing.
