Berry Street Education Model

All Ravenshoe State School staff P -12 worked two days of the Student Free Days learning about the

Berry Street Education Model. The presenter from Melbourne worked with staff to train staff in trauma

informed practice. The domains within the Berry Street Education Model are: Body, Stamina, Engage-

ment, and Character, all anchored by Relationship. These five areas are pedagogical lenses: each do-

main reflects our durable understanding and evidence-based practice that inform daily classroom learn-

ing.

Staff at Ravenshoe State School P – 12 have now completed three of the four days. The final training

day is planned to occur later in the year.

Well done to the staff for your learning in this area.

NEW STAFF: We would like to introduce and extend a warm welcome to our new staff members at the primary campus.

Teachers: Alex Harris – Prep/1 Hello, my name is Miss Harris. I have completed my final year stud-

ying a Master of Teaching (Early Education) at QUT. Last year I com-

pleted my final placement at Ravenshoe State School and fell in

love with the town. I have a passion for Early Years education and I

am very excited about teaching Prep/1 this year.

So you know a little bit about me, I was born in Alice Springs and went to school in Brisbane. I have a

beautiful cat named Elvis. I love all types of music, sandwiches and camping!

Mathew Hopkins – Year 6

My name is Mathew Hopkins and I am the Year 6 teacher for 2020. I am incredibly excited to have the

chance to work with such a great bunch of kids this year and assist them in their transition to high

school.

Being the unfamiliar face around the school, I thought I would take this oppor-

tunity to introduce myself.

I am a recent graduate of James Cook University, but prior to commencing my

degree I worked as a chef in Sydney for about 20 years. I decided teaching was

my ultimate passion. I am an avid cricketer, and play for Norths in the upcom-

ing cricket season.

I look forward to working with you and your child.

Week 6 02-03-2020 9am – 10am

New Behaviour Management Processes This year, we have introduced a Reflection Room to the secondary campus for students who are truant from classes, who are persistently late to class and who are referred to a Buddy Class for disruptive be-haviour during class. This Reflection Room runs at second lunch daily and students are expected to attend if they have breached the expectations regarding class attendance, being punctual to class or behaving in a safe, re-spectful manner for optimum learning during class. If a student does not attend a scheduled session in the lunchtime Reflection Room, a parent/ carer will be notified and that will serve as a final warning for students to attend before a suspension for non-compliance with routine is issued by the School Administration. We encourage parents/ carers to support this system by encouraging them to attend all timetabled clas-ses, be on time and refrain from disruptive behaviour. Breakfast Club and Highland Bakery A sincere thank you to all of the school’s donors and volunteers for their contributions to the school Breakfast Club Program; Ravenshoe Highland Bakery and the Breakfast club men and women. Thanks for ensuring the students have a great start to their school day! Jessie Cairns

New Lunchtime Process This year we have implemented our new lunchtime process. This means that students have a 10 mi-nute Healthy Eating Break at 10am. They also go out to play at the start of each recess and have lunch outside their classroom at the end of play. This reduces the amount of lining up and allows stu-dents to calm down before entering the classroom. So far, it has been a huge success. The bell times are below: 8.45 students collected from A Block 9.00 school starts – Morning Teaching Session 10.00 Healthy Eating Break 10.10 Morning Teaching Session continues 11.00 1st play 11.30 1st eating break 11.50 Middle Teaching Session 1.30 2nd play 1.50 2nd eating break 2.00 Afternoon Teaching Session 3.00 Home Time

Donations:

We have our exciting new garden beds built in the Prep/1 playground. Our Year 6 students and Prep/1

students will be planting these garden beds in the next few weeks.

If you have any fruit or vegetable plants/seedlings or trees that you would like to donate to the school,

we would be extremely grateful.

We are also starting a whole school compositing system and require buckets with lids for each class to

collect their lunch scraps for our compost, and later in the year, for our chooks.

Please email Mathew Hopkins, [email protected] if you are able to assist with donations.

Thanking you,

Lurelle Hodge

Primary Deputy Principal

Dear colleagues

As you would be aware, the Australian Government has announced new measures that specifically address travel restrictions in relation to the management of the Novel Coronavirus. In summary, the Government has enacted border control measures that, in the short term, prevent the entry of for-eign nationals from mainland China, into Australia. While there remains a very low risk of transmission in Australia, these preventative measures are being instigated in the interest of public health. These restrictions do not apply to Australian citizens, permanent residents or their immediate family. However, these people will need to self-isolate for a period of 14 days from when they leave mainland China. I appreciate that these elevated travel restrictions may have some impact on our schools, our corporate operations, and our key stakeholders and it is important that we continue to work together to ensure this is minimised. Our schools will remain open as usual. As always, the health and wellbeing of our staff and students is our number one priority and I would ask that we all remain alert to each other’s and student wellbeing. Information will be posted to OnePortal with information on sup-port strategies for students and our employee assistance service - Lifeworks by Morneau Shepell is available on

1800 604 640 for staff. We continue to work closely with health authorities in relation to the management of this situation. Queensland had already announced and enacted restrictions last week for travellers who have visited China (including Hong Kong), and I reiterate this earlier advice from our health agencies, which remains current:

anyone who has been in contact with any confirmed Novel Coronavirus cases must self-isolate (self-isolation

means staying at home and not accepting visitors) for 14 days following exposure;

travellers who have visited Hubei Province of China need to self-isolate for 14 days after leaving Hubei Province

(noting that the Australian Government has announced this now applies to all of mainland China as explained above);

returned travellers who have visited China cannot attend school, childcare or TAFE for 14 days after leaving China including Hong Kong.

We continue to work with and take the advice of Queensland Health and the latest information is available at Novel Coronavirus on the Queensland Health website.

On a personal level, can I thank you for what you are doing every day and ask that we continue to support our stu-dents, each other and our school communities during this time. Regards Tony Cook Director-General Department of Education

Dear Parents & Caregivers

I am writing to update you on the Novel Coronavirus.

As you would be aware, the Australian Government has announced new measures that specifically address travel restrictions

from mainland China.

While there remains a very low risk of transmission in Australia, these preventative measures are being instigated in the inter-

est of public health.

I do not expect that these travel restrictions will have any major impact on our school operations and I want to assure you that

we will continue to work to ensure any disruption is minimised.

Our school will be open this week as usual as we progress through Semester 1 2020.

As always, the health and wellbeing of our students remains our number one priority and I would ask that you remain alert to

your child’s/children’s wellbeing during this time. Children can have a range of reactions during an event like this and, as al-

ways, teacher and guidance support is available. If you have any concerns, please discuss them with your child’s teacher.

We continue to take advice from Queensland Health and the Department of Education in relation to this matter and the latest

information is available at Novel Coronavirus on the Queensland Health website.

Queensland had already announced and enacted restrictions last week for travellers who had visited China (including Hong

Kong), and I reiterate this earlier advice from our health agencies, which remains current:

anyone who has been in contact with any confirmed Novel Coronavirus cases must self-isolate (self-isolation means stay-

ing at home and not accepting visitors) for 14 days following exposure;

travellers who have visited Hubei Province of China need to self-isolate for 14 days after leaving Hubei Province (noting

that the Australian Government has announced this now applies to all of mainland China as explained above);

returned travellers who have visited China cannot attend school, childcare or TAFE for 14 days after leaving China including

Hong Kong.

On a personal level, can I ask that as a school community we all look out for and support each other during this time.

Again, thank you for your understanding and attention to this important matter.
