From the Principal

WelcomeWelcome to all members of our school community to the 2014 school year. We have had a very positive start to the year with students engaged in a variety of learning programs across the school. This is my third week as Acting Principal and I would like to say thank you to staff, students and parents for

your warm welcome to Suzanne Cory High School. I would also like to wish Mr Peter Starford, Principal at Suzanne Cory High School (2011 – 2103) all the best for the year ahead and acknowledge his passion for education and dedication to the school. We would like to welcome our Year 9 students and new students in other year levels. 2014 is a significant year for the school. This is the first year where we will have a full complement of students with 800 students across Years 9 to 12. Our Foundation students are now in Year 12 and we look forward to celebrating their achievements in all curriculum areas at the end of this year. We have 17 new staff including teachers and Education support staff starting this year which will enhance our teaching and learning programs and provide further opportunities for students to experience success. These opportunities will be provided in classes, year level, co-curricular and whole school programs and events. There will be opportunities for leadership, community participation and contribution to the culture of Suzanne Cory High School. Students will be presented with challenges; both intellectual and physical which will enhance their learning experience and prepare them for a future as citizens in a global community. Our Year 12 students have already had an experience beyond school with a 2 day program at The University of Melbourne. Students listened to presentations regarding tertiary options and took part in activities to help them navigate the journey into the next stage of their education. It was a pleasure to join students and teachers at Queens College for dinner and then participate in a trivia quiz which was highly

competitive and very entertaining. Year 9 students have embarked on a program at Deakin University this week to develop their leadership capabilities and build positive relationships with their peers and Home group teachers. The school oval is being constructed this year for use in 2015. This will add to the Physical Education and Sport facilities at the school providing students with increased access to resources. An important part of the Sporting program is the Swimming and Athletics carnivals to be held in Term 1. These days are wonderful opportunities for students to represent their House and also to build friendships within and across year levels.

The 2014 School YearMy message to students in our first assemblies was to make a commitment to “What is possible and what is next”. I have already had a glimpse of what is possible at Suzanne Cory High School at the awards night last year and through the results achieved by students in unit 3 and 4 subjects. An outstanding effort which sets the scene for further possibilities this year. And what is next for our students to achieve their full potential? Planning their study, being organised, asking for help, using all available resources, finding a balance between school and other parts of their life, getting involved, getting enough sleep and staying healthy will help. We hope that students are able to think about what is possible and then focussing on what is next to achieve their full potential.

Student Wellbeing Students in every Year level have a Home group teacher and Wellbeing Leader who will provide support within the School wide positive behaviours framework. Please contact your child’s Home group teacher in the first instance regarding wellbeing or educational programs. Our Assistant Principals, Ms Muollo and Mr Milner and I will also provide assistance to students and parents.

Parents and the schoolParents are very welcome to become involved at Suzanne Cory High School. The School Council and Parents and Friends Association are the formal organisations within the school that provide

opportunities for parents to participate. You may wish to consider nominating for School Council. School Council elections are held in March each year. We also welcome volunteers to assist with school programs or you may be able to provide a placement for a Year 10 student through our Work Experience program. The Term 1 Calendar is provided for your information listing all school events.

I wish all families a healthy and happy 2014.

Student AbsencesParents are reminded that if your child is absent, you must notify the school. You can contact us by telephone on 8734 2800 or via email on [email protected]

If your child is absent and we are not notified, we will call you to ascertain the whereabouts of your child.

Thank you to parents and students who have purchased one of the three devices on the MBYOD purchase portal. For families who are yet to purchase one of the devices, we encourage you to go to the portal to obtain your device: http://www.lwt.com.au/orders/SuzanneCoryHS These laptops and tablets are important learning tools for students. As outlined in the handbook, please note that our Managed BYOD program is a portal purchase program with three options for purchase and that we can only connect those particular listed devices to the school network. Each of those three options comes to your home pre-imaged with the eduStar suite of programs, the Windows 8.1 Professional Edition and Microsoft Office 2013 to ensure that students have a standard set of programs to access and use as part of the learning program at school. Students will also be able to access on-site repairs at the school by the supplier and at-home repairs if requested. We look forward to all

students joining this Managed BYOD program to enable an enriched learning experience with regular use of the school network, internet and digital learning resources in their classes. MBYOD devices are being progressively connected to the school network each day as students bring them in. The Year 11 and 12 laptops are being distributed as students return their Acceptable Use Agreements. We have recently had twenty one additional new data projectors installed in learning spaces across the school and digital signage (large-screen panels) installed in the school’s agora, reception and cafeteria areas. An additional lab of Mac computers has also been established during the holidays, predominantly for students undertaking art, design, technology, media and music subjects.

In Year 12 our students are undertaking four or five Unit 3/4 studies at Suzanne Cory High School. As a result of this students will have periods during the school day when they do not have timetabled classed. These periods are an important part of their year 12 program as they provide students with time to study independently or in small groups.

Students are expected to use their study periods wisely to ensure the maximum benefit. When classes are not timetabled they are able to work individually in the iCentre, in small groups in the study centre or under teacher supervision in a break out room around the school. Students will not be supervised by a teacher during these times.

All students start the day with a timetabled session; morning homegroup. This is an essential part of the day in which students connect with their homegroup teacher and receive important notices

about upcoming events. Accordingly all students are expected to punctually attend homegroup every day. Students with a study period between homegroup and lunchtime are then expected to remain on school grounds and work in the areas described above.

Students with study periods at the end of the day may leave school grounds after their last timetabled class but not before the start of lunchtime. These students must sign out at the front office before leaving school grounds and should not return once they have left for the day. Students are, of course, welcome to stay on school grounds and continue to study at these times should they so wish.

SCHS in the NewsLast year, 178 of the school’s 200 year 11 students completed a year 12 VCE subject. Some students came back to the school on the day their results were released to conduct an interview with local news and participate in a photo shoot. Congratulations to these students for making the SCHS community proud!

Hi my name is Caitlin and I am the new Student Wellbeing Counsellor at SCHS. I trained as a Social Worker and have spent my time working and volunteering with high school aged students and their families across the western region of Melbourne in many different roles.

I will be working Monday to Wednesday from the Wellbeing Office which is next to the Sick Bay and across from the Careers Office.

I am available to meet with students who might like to have a confidential chat about ways to overcome challenges to achieving their future goals. This could be stress or worry about your study, feeling low, sad

or anxious more often than usual, difficult things happening with friends or family, or anything else that you might be concerned about. If you would like further support, information or advice, your first contact point will be your Home Group Teacher, who will be able to provide some strategies and/or information that could be helpful. You are also welcome to make an appointment with me through your Home Group Teacher and Year Level Wellbeing Leader. You will not have to tell anyone the specific details about why you would like to make an appointment if you don’t feel comfortable to, just simply that you are interested in meeting with me. For Year 12 students, these appointments can be made in your Study Periods. I look forward to meeting you over the year.

Each year the Nillumbik Council runs an Ekphrasis poetry competition: that is, poetry that is inspired by works of art. There are a number of artworks from their collection that are on a website for you to respond to in some way – see the example to the left; or follow the website below for further details. Poems have to be no longer than 12 lines; winning poems will be printed as part of a series of postcards. There is a youth section and it’s free toenter.There’sa$150prizefortheyouthsectionand you can enter up to 3 poems. Entries close 31 March 2014.

Poetry Competition

Ms Bradwell will be running some Poetry Group sessions to help with ideas for this during February – watch the bulletin for dates.

Last year, 302 students, from all over Victoria, participated in this competition, in teams of four. Of the nine Suzanne Cory High School teams (across Years 9-11), two teams finished in the silver category and the other seven teams finished in the bronze category. This was an impressive result, which we aim to match and improve upon this year. This year, the online competition will be held on Thursday 27th February (from 2.30-4.30pm). Preparation time commences at 1.30pm. Students who are competing will miss their scheduled period 5/6 classes and be required to stay at school until they are dismissed at 4.30pm. See the OZCLO page in this newsletter for more

information and some sample problems. If you think this kind of competition might be the sort of challenge that you would enjoy, speak with your friendly English teacher. Students who would like to enter a team are invited to collect an entry form from Ms. Sullivan or Ms. Bradwell. Ms. Cindy Sullivan English/Humanities Leading Teacher

Thank YouThe Suzanne Cory High School community would like to extend a warm thank you to our suppliers, Landmark School Supplies and Rushfords Schoolwear, for supporting our students.

We would also like to thank the Parents and Friends Association for purchasing an automated external defibrillator for the school. We appreciate the work that the PFA does for the school community and are grateful for their generous purchase.

Celebrations with Shanghai Foreign Language SchoolSuzanne Cory High School is fortunate to have a Sister School relationship with the prestigious Shanghai Foreign Language School (SFLS). Affiliated with the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), SFLS is a top ranked specialist language school, drawing students not only from Shanghai but also from other parts of China. December 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of SFLS and I was privileged to be invited to participate in the anniversary celebrations and deliver a keynote presentation at an international symposium attended by SFLS and SISU staff, school leaders from Shanghai and other Chinese foreign language schools and representatives from other international tertiary institutions and schools with whom SFLS has a relationship.A gift was presented from Suzanne Cory School to

the Shanghai Foreign Language School to mark the importance of the occasion and the commitment to an ongoing relationship between our schools. Our schools are an excellent match in a number of ways with both being academically selective co-educational schools, students are of similar age, students exhibit high-level aspirations and both schools value the development of student leadership and a well-rounded school experience. Indeed, the SFLS motto No End to Learning and the SCHS motto Learning for Life illustrate our common purposes and values.Later this year it is anticipated that students from each school will have the opportunity to participate in visits to each other’s schools and cities.
