Pope Francis Praise Be to you Laudato Si’
“Sister earth along with all the abandoned of our world, is crying out, pleading that we take another course.” No.53
Pope Francis’ landmark Encylical Letter Laudato Si’ was launced in Rome on 18 June 2015. This letter, subtitled On Care for Our Common Home, is unprecedented in focusing on the subject of the environment. The encyclical takes its name from the opening of the Canticle of the Creatures by St. Francis of Assisi, Laudato Si’ or Praise be, to remind us that the earth our common home “is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.” The encyclical centres around the concept of integral ecology to describe the relationships of the person: with God, with one’s self, with other human beings, with creation.
A group will meet to begin a reflection on Laudato Si’ on Wednesday, 23 November 2016 in the Pastoral Centre at 11.45am. Anyone interested in the Care of the Earth is most
welcome to attend.

Closing of the Holy Door & Ministries Mass
On the 8th December last year, we commenced our Parish
Mission with the official opening of the Holy Door. The
Holy Door has been the symbol and the focal point of the
YEAR OF MERCY which Pope Francis declared.
We close the Year of Mercy with the closing of the Holy
Door at the Vigil Mass on Saturday 19th November. We
will combine that with our annual MINISTRIES MASS and
the Parish Social. The open Door reminded us that God’s mercy is ever
available to us; that the Door of His Mercy never fails to welcome us in
whatever our difficulties.
He asks us in return to open our hearts to others in their
times of trial. We try to meet those needs through the
various ministries we offer. On that evening, we will
celebrate that service and commit ourselves to continue
the same into the future. In that sense, every year will
be a YEAR OF MERCY—every Door ever open “to joy
and love.”

Malachi is the last of the twelve minor prophets in the Old Testament. His name means (appropriately) ‘ messenger’. He lived at the time of the rebuilding of the Temple after the Babylonian captivity in the 5th century BC. It seems strange to be talking about sun and healing rays and ‘blazing like an oven’ in the middle of November. As we approach the end of the liturgical year, there is the anticipation of the end times.
We continue from where we left off last week. It seems to indicate a par-ticular complaint that was brought to Paul’s attention. He is clear on the im-portance of each person’s contribution regarding work, and quite emphatic about reminding the listeners that he also pulled his weight when he was with them. The suggestion that some are not keeping busy and minding the business of others suggests that some things never change.
If, as scholars suggest, Luke’s gospel was written in the period around AD 80—100, then the people who first listened to these words would have known what the Romans had done to the Temple in Jerusalem after the Jewish revolt in AD 70. Nothing was left. Jesus is speaking of the end times and advises people to be circumspect about the signs that might lead them into thinking that the end was near. Whatever about the signs and por-tents, the reality of persecution would have been something known to those listening to Luke’s Gospel. Jesus’ words of encouragement to them are as real today as they were then, as we attempt to defend the message of the ‘ ‘ ‘gospel in a climate of aggressive secularism.
