Recently I saw some research that shows that, compared to many other countries, Australian families spend very lile me actually helping school children with their learning at home, and this is having an effect on their performance. You can make a difference to your childs learning by coming along to the maths session tomorrow evening from 5 - 6 pm. Sue ORegan will lead the session and share some praccal, fun and effecve ideas for maths learning at home. Come along! SPELLING BEE Congratulaons to Sean, Luca, Frankie and Olivia who represented Uki at the Regional Spelling Bee last week. It was an excellent learning opportunity for all the students, as they tackled very tricky words under the spotlight in front of a large audience. Well done for giving it your very best effort! WHAT IS THE REFLECTION ROOM? Uki Public School has a Wellbeing and Discipline Policy, as is required of all public schools. Our policy has been comprehensively reviewed and endorsed by the P&C, and is available on our website for viewing. The policy outlines the way we acknowledge posive behaviour and also addresses the consequences of a students acons if they make an incorrect choice. These days, the emphasis of consequences is on reflecon and restoraon, rather than punishment. Therefore, if a student does not make the right choice, one likely outcome is for them to aend the Reflecon Roomfor one play session where, in discussion with a teacher, they are asked to reflect on their behaviour and make a plan for the future, so that they are much less likely to repeat the adverse behaviour. Parents are oſten contacted in this process so that they are aware of their childs choices and plans for improvement. The Reflecon Roomprocess is promoted as best pracceby the Department of Educaon. We are very grateful for the support we receive in this process from the vast majority of parents who appreciate our efforts to address adverse behaviour or poor choices in a posive, restorave and transparent manner that ulmately benefits students. AWESOME ART AT UKI! What a wonderful aſternoon we had last Friday at our creave arts show. Our art and music rooms were abuzz with families appreciang the beauful work created by our students, including poery, texles, screen prinng, video-making, painng, sketching, collages, watercolours and pastel work. Many people (and also a puppy or two!) enjoyed the green screenspace, where ipad technology enabled images to be captured as if we were in an arsts studio, or beneath the Eiffel Tower, or even flying like Superman! The outdoor wingsinstallaons also provided some great photo opportunies, and it was so much fun dancing with everyone on the lawn as the students included parents and friends in their class dances. As always, events such as these are the result of collaboraon between teachers (who worked very hard to get the childrens artworks ready for display) administrave and support staff and our many wonderful volunteers (and here I must parcularly menon Karyn Chrichton, who has spent hours with the students and aſter hours geng the poery ready). However, the final thanks must go to Jenny Taylor and Sue ORegan who co-ordinated and managed the show; many hours were spent in preparaon, but, judging by the posive comments on the night, it was definitely worth it!

SCIENCE IN 3/4S Check out the solar oven Liam made in his science lesson! Mission accomplished - the chocolate melted (which, after all, is the first step to a delicious cup of hot chocolate!) Liam evaluated his oven and decided that some insulation around the cardboard might be a future improvement.

INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM TRY-OUTS It was great to see so many children and parents in the music room last night to try out an instrument to learn. If you weren’t able to make it last night, you’re welcome to go to Murwillumbah Public school tomorrow evening where Mrs Armour, Mr Keogh and Miss Moore will again be conducting try-outs.

What a busy week the P&C had last week! Thank you to all who helped out at the Bunnings BBQ whether it was on the day, organising/prepping for the day or donating however they could, it was all appreciated. The P&C made about $1850 for the day. Also a big shout out to Danni and all who prepped for the Uki Public School Art Show on Friday with soups, chocolates and drinks. A further $350 was made on the evening. Our next P&C meeting will be held around week 2 in term 4, and hopefully we will see our new canteen being put to use at the beginning of term 4….fingers crossed. Andrew Tiffen - President

WORDS OF THE WEEK K-2: abuzz Abuzz means filled with an excited energy or noise. The school was abuzz with excitement on ‘Water Play Day’.

3-6: comprehensive Comprehensive means thorough, or including all aspects of something. Our school goes through a very comprehensive process to choose our student leaders.

Coding with Scratch

Last week, the senior students explored procedures by learning to code a platform game in Scratch. They extended this experience to design a procedure in Scratch junior for our Kindy and Year 1 students. We had a wonderful afternoon teaching

and learning from each other, creating characters, animations and stories.

We are a network of volunteers who support mums in their third trimester of pregnancy and the first year of their baby’s life.

By being a volunteer you have the ability to help a mother, who may not have a supportive family environment, and assist her to enjoy motherhood and establish a nurturing bond with her baby.
