BUDDY SPORT It has been an exciting term for Kindergarten and Year 5/6 students. This term Mrs Smith and Mrs McAuliffe have set up a Buddy Sport Program for Kindergarten students with students in Year 5/6 as their buddy coach. At lunch time Kindergarten students get to learn a new skill in a sporting activity they selected at the start of the term. The Year 5/6 Buddies have loved and enjoyed every minute, the responsibility they have taken on this term is to be commended. The Kindergarten students have all gained confidence, new sporting skills and friendship for life. The Buddy Sport Program this term included teaching the students skills in football, netball, handball, basketball, cricket, soccer, relays and skipping. As you can see the Buddies and Kindergarten students have been very busy. A HUGE thank you to our wonderful Buddies who have been excellent coaches. Kindergarten students are super excited for Buddy Sport next term.

How can I help my child improve their writing?

Writing, like all aspects of your child’s learning, requires lots of practise. It is important to read their writing or ask them to read it to you and it is especially important that you find one positive aspect to comment on. For example, “I really like the way you’ve described this …..”. Some simple activities you can do with your child include:

Read and talk about the writing that your child

brings home from school.

Praise your child for using neat and legible handwriting.

Play games such as I Spy, Scrabble, Boggle, Scattegories and Crossword Puzzles to help build vocabulary and spelling skills.

Draw a picture or ask your child to, then get them to label it. For example, a butterfly picture could be labelled with wings, antennae, thorax, proboscis, legs, etc.

Make a photo album or scrapbook with your child and have them write captions for each of the photos.

Write notes to your child and encourage them to respond in writing.

Ask your child to help with day to day writing activities such as preparing a shopping list.

These are just a few ways you can help improve your child’s writing. For more ideas please see your child’s class teacher and have fun with writing!

Kindergarten Orientation Last Tuesday was the first in our three day Orientation Program for our new 2015 Kindergarten students. Our students spent the afternoon familiarizing themselves with their new school and engaging in reading and craft activities in the Kindergarten rooms, while mums and dads made their way to the library where they participated in Kinder “O” talks. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our presenters for their informative talks with our Kinder parents The day culminated with afternoon tea which was an opportune time for our new parents to get to know one and other and ask any questions that were not answered during the presentation. A big thank you to Jo Moorby for her superb catering of afternoon tea. The final two days for Kinder Orientation are September the 9th. Both sessions start at 2pm. Tim Harris Assistant Principal

REEC Year 6 Students A group of Year 6 students attended a science workshop at the Riverina Environmental Education Centre (REEC). This workshop was held for 4 days Monday, Wednesday and Friday last week and Monday this week. We learnt about magnetism, water, gases and much more. Many other schools were invited to share this experience with us including Sturt, Young, Ashmont and Sacred Heart. We got to stay there for the whole day and during our lunch break we got to do an obstacle course. There were roughly 12 students each day who attended this workshop. At the end of the day all students received a certificate to show that we participated in the workshop. This was a great experience and it was fun to learn with other schools. The next SRC fundraiser is coming…

On Friday 19th September the SRC will be holding their next fundraiser in support of the Children’s Ward at the Wagga Base Hospital. Students have decided to hold a pyjama day as part of the fundraising effort.

All students wishing to support this worthy cause are requested to wear their best pyjamas or onesie to school and bring a $2 donation. Students that make a donation will also be able to go to the hall to watch a movie and enjoy a bag of popcorn and lollies.

PG movie permission In order to provide students with a greater selection of movies as part of the SRC Pyjama Day, as well as events throughout the end of the school year, the KPS staff request permission to show PG movies.

All movies will be carefully selected to ensure they are appropriate for a young audience.

If, for any reason, you DO NOT wish your child to view PG movies (i.e. you only wish them to view G rated movies), please contact the school office by the 8th September to inform us that you DO NOT CONSENT for you child to participate in activities where PG movies will be shown.

Unless you contact the office by the above date it will be presumed that you do give permission for you child watch PG rated movies.

Build a Reader! Home reading can be a time which is stressful.

But does it need to be? Try these helpful hints to build a reader and make

your home a peaceful reading haven!

EXPLORE BOOKS Visit the KPS or local library

and share time choosing a text that your child is interested in.

READ, READ, READ Make reading a priority activity in your day. We are all busy but try to dedicate a short time each day to spend reading with your

child to help them with a most important life skill.

QUESTION AND DISCUSS Ask questions and discuss different aspects of the text.

The chatter that you have with your child is valuable and helps with comprehension skills. Ask questions, make predictions, discuss characters, find the main ideas, retell the story and

rate the book.

MAKE IT FUN! Reading shouldn’t be a

chore. Read what interests your child and keep stress low, smile and encourage

your child. Reward the efforts your child

makes.

IS THE TEXT A GOOD FIT? To pick a good fit make sure your

child can read and understand most of the words and can tell you about what they have read.

FOR BEGINNING READERS Point out and read words in our world like street and shop signs and items in the

grocery store. Practise sight words and read home readers every day. Ask questions before, during and after reading. Help sound out words by breaking them into chunks and read out aloud so you can

hear each other. Try different sounds for vowels to help (short and long vowel sounds) Use the pictures to help work out words. Skip a really tricky word, complete the sentence and then read again to work the

word out.

FOR CONFIDENT READERS Take turns reading aloud to help your child with

pronunciation and expression. Encourage your child to look at all the information like

illustrations, graphs and the table of contents. Notice interesting new vocabulary and try to use the

words in your everyday conversations.

Happy Reading! KPS Literacy Team
