The last three weeks have flown by

and now everyone has settled in to

the new routines. I’m sure we’re all

looking forward to the Exeat

weekend.

Since the last newsletter

Mrs Cathy Lees, (Director of

Teaching and Learning) spoke in

assembly about growth mindset and

how important the word ‘yet’ is -

“I can’t do this…yet”. We will be

sending home some information

shortly to explain about growth

mindset and how you can help at

home.

Today Mr Mike Ferguson, (Deputy

Head) spoke about acting

responsibly, one of our five

core expectations.

He talked about Accountability for

our actions; building our Character;

and setting Targets to help us

improve in this area. It was Plato

who said that “good people don’t

need laws to tell them to act

responsibly”.

Last term we held a House

competition to collect clothes for

the Great North Air Ambulance –

we received a certificate this week

to acknowledge the £999 raised for

them. A remarkable achievement in

comparison to recent years, so well

done everyone.

Ticket sales for the Feather Ball on

Saturday 30 November are going

well. We have already sold over 200

tickets (we had 150 guests at the last

ball) and have space for another 10

tables. If you would like to come

along, then please complete the

form at the end of this newsletter

and drop it off at Reception.

The PTA bought a hot drinks

machine last year, which is located

at the bottom end of the Reception

area. Drinks cost £1 and the

machine is open from approximately

3.45pm – 6.00pm most days. It can

also be used on match days when

you might need a hot chocolate to

keep you warm at half time. Please

be careful with hot drinks when

there are children around and do

not let pupils use the machine

themselves.

It was great to see pupils starting to

play in fixtures, now that the term is

up and running. The U10 girls

showed great grit and enthusiasm in

the pouring rain against Hymers,

whilst the U12 and U13 boys had a

clean sweep of victories against

The Grammar School at Leeds. It is

always satisfying when the hard

work in training and listening to the

coaching points on how to improve,

all come together on match day.

The Macmillan coffee morning

is on Friday 27 September in the

Queen Anne Dining Hall, after drop

off. At 4.00pm we will hold a cake

stall in Reception in aid of

Macmillan Cancer support. Please

bake cakes and come along after

drop off to support Macmillan

nurses.

We are very fortunate at St Olave’s

that our parents are a very

supportive body and enjoy cheering

on the teams at sports fixtures,

generally in a very helpful and polite

way. Please can we remind you

that all support must be positive to

both teams and conducive to the

game style that the member of staff

is trying to coach. Please support

the team. Comments about your

own child or indeed other people’s

children are not beneficial to the

approach to sport that we are

trying to foster in all our pupils. All

our members of staff are qualified

sports coaches in their own field, or

are working hard at developing

their own experience and

qualifications in what they teach.

Let’s Grow 2013 vouchers are

still available when you shop at

Morrisons and we are collecting

them again this year- a box for

collection will be placed in

Reception next week. This is being

organised by the Eco council to buy

more ‘Let’s Grow’ gardening

equipment and resources.

European Day of

Languages PTA

Sport - Supporting your child

Eco Club

It is not helpful to our communal

aim if parents contradict the coach

at matches, after-school clubs or at

home.

At St Olave’s we believe that

co-curricular clubs are run to give

children experience and more

contact time with teachers to

develop their own skills, as well as

enjoying the sport for its own fun

element. School lunchtime and

after-school clubs are not a suitable

environment for parents to give

support and we would ask that you

refrain from attending these – we

would not expect you to be in the

classroom watching a chess club,

model making club or drama club,

and the same applies to sports

clubs.

European Day of Languages is

Thursday 26 September.

Pupils may come to school dressed

as a person from a particular

country (not necessarily a European

country) or dressed in the colours

of that country’s flag. Please could

they also write five interesting or

unusual facts about that country

and pin it to the front of their

outfit.

During the day there will be various

activities in different languages that

will take place in the lessons, just

for a few minutes.

Please see the attached Code of

Conduct that staff, parents and

children across Clifton, St Olave’s

and St Peter’s are asked to adhere

to. As ever if you have any queries

about school sport feel free to

make an appointment to see

Mr Savage, Head of PE and Games,

at St Olave’s.

It would help your children if PE kit

is placed in a draw string bag inside

their large kit bag. This would be

for white indoor kit and indoor

shoes. Any draw string type bag

would be appropriate. This would

then allow pupils to leave their

swimming kit and PE kit in their

lockers when carrying heavy games

kit bags.

Code of Conduct in Sport

Sport at St Olave’s is an important part of a fully balanced educational programme

for our students. All pupils are given the opportunity to take part in a broad and

varied programme of physical activities within a structured, safe and caring

environment. Through the work of committed teachers within the school in

curriculum and extra-curricular time, pupils will develop physically, emotionally,

socially, morally and spiritually. Sport is seen as an integral part of pupils receiving a

rounded education. Through experiences gained in sport, pupils will develop an

appreciation for the need of cooperation, commitment and consideration for others,

which they can utilise in all aspects of their lives at present and in the future.

Care should be taken to exclude from our school sport those aspects which place

the pursuit of victory over other more important aspects such as enjoyment, good

sportsmanship and acceptance of victory and defeat in equal measure. The spirit in

which the game is played should be the fundamental reason for participation over

the pursuit of victory. With that in mind the following specific points are made:

Players

1 Verbal provocation and deliberate violence even if reactionary is totally

unacceptable.

2 Accept without question all referees’ decisions. Any negative response

towards an official’s ruling is unacceptable.

3 The use of bad language, whether directed at umpire/referee, another

player, spectator or oneself is unacceptable.

4 Be dignified in victory and defeat. Gracious conduct, whatever the result,

is important.

5 Never use unfair or illegal tactics to gain an advantage, observe the laws,

rules and regulations of the various sports.

6 Excessive or inappropriate talk on the field of play should not be used.

7 In games lessons, extra-curricular practices and inter school fixtures, the

correct St Olave’s school kit should be worn.

8 Play in a sportsmanlike manner and extend courtesy to opposition teams.

This should include shaking hands with the opposition at the end of the

match and extending thanks to the referee/umpire and teachers.

9 Work hard, showing full contribution and effort in training.

10 Respect your teachers and listen to their advice.

Page 6: Newsletter€¦ · The Master . Look who’s coming to St Olave’s Tom Palmer is the author of three Puffin fiction series for children: Football Academy, Foul Play and The Squad

Teachers

1 All teachers should fully recognise the role that sport plays in a child’s education and it is for the benefit of the student not the adult. Teachers

should be fully aware of the standards expected from our students.

2 Teachers should avoid any form of criticising the refereeing or umpiring

of a match particularly in front of pupils and parents.

3 Teachers should try to ensure that their knowledge and coaching

strategies are up to date and in line with the school’s philosophy.

4 Teachers should not engage in excessive and ritual ‘psyching up‘ of a

team.

5 Teachers should never allow a player to train or play when injured and

that players are coached in a safe environment.

6 Understand that most learning is achieved through doing and not through

excessive dialogue.

7 Teachers should teach sound sportsmanship in parallel with skills; fair play

is an integral part of sport at St Olave’s.

8 Teachers should try and ensure that all pupils at St Olave’s get as much

access to inter school matches as possible.

9 Teachers must take into account that our children are young and as such

change regularly. It is our responsibility to teach all of them.

Parents

1 Parents are encouraged to attend fixtures at St Olave’s and to support

the team as positively as possible. Remember, we should support the

school and not individual players.

2 Parents should be realistic about a players’ ability and not push them

towards a level that they are not capable of achieving.

3 Parents should never seek, during or immediately after a match, to give

advice to or question decisions made by teachers, referees/umpires or

players.

4 Support may be enthusiastic and should be positive rather than negative; persistent negative messages will adversely affect the players’ and

referee’s performance and attitude. A good example should be set by

applauding good play and skilful performance from players from both

schools.

5 Respect the decisions and professionalism of teachers; accept that

selection of teams is made in a fair, unbiased manner without prejudice to

individuals.

6 Parents should support both school and children by being sensible about

the number and length of external sporting commitments. School

commitments should be prioritised over club commitments unless there

are exceptional circumstances.

7 If a parent feels strongly about any incident occurring during matches

then please contact the member of staff in charge at school or the Head

of Sport.

8 Parents are encouraged to attend matches as supporters of the school.

They should never enter the field of play, at the end of matches or when

children are injured. If an injury has occurred to their child, their advice

will be sought as soon as the extent of the injury has been ascertained by

the member of staff.
