Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to Week 5 and 6. We have such a busy fortnight and I have been extremely proud of the students of Heckenberg. Many visitors to our school have complimented me on their behaviour, manners and enthusiasm. It makes me very proud to have people from outside of our school recognise how wonderful our students are. Well done and thank you to every boy and girl for helping to give our school such a great name.

Education Week – Open Day and Education Week Assembly

Thank you to the many wonderful families who joined us in our Education Week celebrations. Our classrooms were buzzing with excitement as students showed off their wonderful writing abilities. Your children love to see you at school, it makes them feel very special. Our Education Week Assembly was brilliant, a large number of parents, carers, grandparents and friends were treated to some fantastic entertainment. Well done to the Senior Dance Group, Choir, Kindergarten and our Aboriginal Culture Group who joined in with a group from Ashcroft High School

to give a very special rendition of the National Anthem. Once again, the students at Heckenberg impressed me with their enthusiasm and behaviour. A special thank you must go to the wonderful parents from the P&C who worked very hard and sold sausage sandwiches, chicken kebabs and pop corn at lunch time. Money raised from these events will go towards helping our students. Thank you for your support.

Eden Gardens Planting Day

We had a wonderful day on Thursday 2 August. Staff from Eden Gardens, Community Greening and the Cancer council came along to spend the day with our students planting gardens and beautifying our school. Thank you to the wonderful parents who came along to help us out. As I mentioned previously, student behaviour was outstanding on this day and I was so proud of each and every child. Public Education Ambassador

Congratulations to Amira in Year 6 who was selected as Heckenberg Public School’s - Public School Ambassador. Amira was selected as she shows strong leadership, great communication skills and is a great model of the values of Public Education. Amira has had many wonderful experiences as a result of being selected as our school Ambassador. She travelled with students from every school across the Sydney South West Region to Belgenny Farm for a fun day of leadership activities. Amira and the other Ambassadors also spent a day at the University of Western Sydney. They had a wonderful day where they participated in team building, leadership and communication activities. Following this great day all of the Ambassadors, families and Principals gathered at the Revesby Workers Club where each Ambassador received a certificate from the Regional Director, Mr Murat Dizdar. I am sure that Amira has had many wonderful experiences with her role as Public School Ambassador and I know that she represented Heckenberg School with pride. Congratulations Amira. Kindergarten Enrolments

We are now taking Kindergarten enrolments for 2013. If you know of any child who will be starting school next year please remind them to pop into our front office to obtain an enrolment form. It is important for our future planning of orientation days that we know the names of all students who will be starting at Heckenberg in 2013. Head Start

We are also taking enrolments for Head Start for 2013. Head Start is a ‘school readiness’ program for students who will be enrolling at Heckenberg in the following year. If you know of any child who will be eligible for this program, please remind them to visit our office for further information. The NED show

Students and staff were entertained last Friday with the NED show. This entertaining show also shared a great message about ‘anti bullying’. Students were able to purchase yo-yo’s from the front office. Book Fair and Book Parade

Miss Alderton has been busy organising our Book Fair for this year. A wonderful selection of books will be available for students to view and purchase in Week 6. Books will be for sale in the library before school, during lunch time and after school on Thursday 23 August, Friday 24 August, Monday 27 August and

Tuesday 28 August. Books are a wonderful way to enter into a world of learning and we will be sharing our love of books with a Book Parade on Friday 24 August at 9.00am. All students are encouraged to dress up as a character from their favourite book. Classes will share a favourite story and then parade around our quadrangle to show off their wonderful costumes. Families and friends are welcome to join us on this day. Athletics Carnival

We will be holding our own version of the Olympics on Thursday 23 August. Families and friends are invited to join us as we hold our annual Athletics Carnival. All students are reminded to wear their school hat and sport uniform on this day. The P&C will be holding a sausage sizzle at lunch time. A note with more details will be coming home shortly. Sun Safe Policy at Heckenberg

At Heckenberg, we are concerned about student safety. We have a ‘No hat, play in the shade’

policy. Students are reminded to wear a school hat when they are outside at school. An order

has been placed for some ‘sun safe’ wide brimmed hats with the Heckenberg logo on it. if you

wish to purchase a ‘sun safe’ hat for your child these hats will be available shortly. I am sure

you will agree that the sun safe hats – as seen modelled by Taleigh and Bobby in the Daily

Telegraph last week, look absolutely fantastic (and provide safety from the sun)

Woolworths Earn and Learn Program

Thank you to the many families who supported our school with this program. Mrs Nagy is currently in the process

of bundling up all of the sticker cards and sending them off to Woolworths. We will advise you of what we receive

for our school in the coming weeks.

Coles Sports for Schools Vouchers

We are also participating in the Coles Sports for School Program. For every $10 spent at Coles, Coles online, BI-LO

supermarkets, customers will receive 1 voucher. If you do your shopping at Coles between 13th June and 14th

August just ask for Coles sports vouchers and bring into school to place in our collection box. After the 18th we

will redeem our vouchers for sporting equipment for our students.

Liverpool Council Green Grant

Our school has been successful in receiving a grant from Liverpool Council. The money will be spent on establishing

vegetable gardens for our students. Thank you to Mrs Dimos for her hard work in preparing the application for

this grant. Our vegetable gardens will be established shortly, all classes will be able to take responsibility for a

small garden and we are hoping to be able to use produce grown in our Breakfast Club.

Late arrivals

The number of students who arrive late to school continues to be of concern. It is essential

that students arrive at school before 9.00am when the bell goes. In the past week there has

been an average of 10 students each day arriving late to school. These students are missing

out on morning fitness, which is important to ensure that students are fit and healthy and

wide awake for a great start to learning for the day. Thank you for your support in this

matter. If you are having problems with getting your child to school each morning, please

come and see your classroom teacher or myself. We will be only too happy to work with you to help get your child

to school.

Have a fantastic fortnight. I am looking forward to seeing lots of parents and carers at our Athletics Carnivals

and Book Parade in the coming weeks.
