ANZAC DAY Thank you to the many students who participated in the Anzac Day March this year. The number of students who participated was outstanding and the respectful manner in which they did so is to be commended. As a school, we believe it is very important to support the wider community on this day, to show our appreciation and give dignity to those who have worked so hard, some even losing their lives, to bring peace to our world. I thank our students for giving up their time to represent our school at such a significant event. Thank you also to our parents for making it possible for the children to be present on these occasions. We have received many compliments and all students were a credit to their families. Once again, thank you to all students, families and teachers who were able to support our participation in this very important community event. MOTHERSDAY On Sunday, we celebrate MothersDay – a very special day when we say thank you to our mothers for everything which they have done for us. For some of us, it is a time to remember the past and for others, it is a time to celebrate the future. I am sure that each of us has a very special memory of our mum and on their special day we honour them. Mothers are the precious treasure troves which remain an important part of one's life. There are times when we just sit back and think about the times we learnt from our mother, or suddenly after tasting a dish you prepared, you think of how your mother used to prepare it. These are some precious moments that we are reminded of, even after many years. Such reflections never fail to bring a smile to our face. Mothers are such that they become a part of your psyche, as cherished memories. I wish all our mums a very happy MothersDay for Sunday, 12 th May. Traditionally, May is the month when we remember, celebrate and thank Mary, the mother of God, in a special way. During his 26 year pontificate, John Paul II frequently reminded us that the month of May is, in a particular way, dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. In their reflection on the significance of Jesuspassion, the Church fathers understood that when Jesus, dying in agony on the Cross, said to John, This is your mother”, he was not merely entrusting Mary to Johns care, but also to making Mary the spiritual mother of all followers of Christ. In Marys life on earth we see a strong woman, the author of the Magnificat, who was willing to embrace motherhood as a vocation from God in all its joys and sorrows. Every mother will know exactly, the meaning of the prophet Simeons words to Mary, when Jesus was presented in the temple in Jerusalem: A sword will pierce your own heart”. She was with Jesus at every important moment of his life: from his conception, his birth in Bethlehem, during his public ministry, at his crucifixion, and with the disciples on Pentecost Sunday, when the Holy Spirit came down upon them. In following the footsteps of Jesus, and in the richness of the Christian tradition, we find in Mary the perfect mediator between mankind and God, in who we can confide our most private thoughts and deepest fears, asking her intercession in the confident knowledge that Jesus will hear her, as happened at the Feast at Cana. During this month of May, dedicated to Mary, we are encouraged to pray to her to intercede on our behalf. MOTHERSDAY BREAKFAST We look forward to seeing our St Carthages mothers who accept our invitation to gather for a MothersDay Breakfast tomorrow, 9 th May, 7:30am — 8:30am, in front of the St Carthages School Hall. MOTHERSDAY STALL We will hold a MothersDay Stall for the children to buy a gift for mum. This will be held TOMORROW. All gifts will be $3.00 each - please send money in with the children on the day. Dear Families,

Welcome to our students and families for Term 2. I hope that everyone had a great holiday and found plenty of time to rest and relax. We look forward to a very busy and productive Term Two.

ANZAC DAY

Thank you to the many students who participated in the Anzac Day March this year. The number of students who participated was outstanding and the respectful manner in which they did so is to be commended. As a school, we believe it is very important to support the wider community on this day, to show our appreciation and give dignity to those who have worked so

hard, some even losing their lives, to bring peace to our world. I thank our students for giving up their time to represent our school at such a significant event. Thank you also to our parents for making it possible for the children to be present on these occasions. We have received many compliments and all students were a credit to their families. Once again, thank you to all

students, families and teachers who were able to support our participation in this very important community event.

MOTHERS’ DAY

On Sunday, we celebrate Mothers’ Day – a very special day when we say thank you to our mothers for everything which they have done for us. For some of us, it is a time to remember the past and for others, it

is a time to celebrate the future. I am sure that each of us has a very special memory of our mum and on their special day we honour them. Mothers are the precious treasure troves which remain an important part of one's life. There are times when we just sit back and think about the times we learnt from our mother, or

Such reflections never fail to bring a smile to our face. Mothers are such that they become a part of your psyche, as cherished memories.

I wish all our mums a very happy Mothers’ Day for Sunday, 12th May.

Traditionally, May is the month when we remember, celebrate and thank Mary, the mother of God, in a special way. During his 26 year pontificate, John Paul II frequently reminded us that the month of May is, in a particular way, dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. on the Cross, said to John, “This is your mother”, he was not merely entrusting Mary to John’s care, but also to making Mary the spiritual mother of all followers of Christ. In Mary’s life on earth we see a strong woman, the author of the Magnificat, who was willing to embrace motherhood as a vocation from God in all its joys and sorrows. the prophet Simeon’s words to Mary, when Jesus was presented in the temple in Jerusalem: “A sword will pierce your own heart”. She was with Jesus at every important moment of his life: from his conception, his birth in Bethlehem, during his public

ST CARTHAGE’S FEAST DAY

Next Wednesday, 15th May we will celebrate the Feast of St Carthage. St Carthage is the Patron Saint of our parish and our

school. Bishop Doyle and the Presentation Sisters who established our school 133 years ago decided that the Cathedral School of our Lismore Diocese should be named St Carthage in honour of a great Saint who was an inspirational leader and a great teacher.

St Carthage, whose name is also given as Mochuda, was born of a good family, in what is now County Kerry, Ireland, about the

year 555. Mochuda’s father was an important man in the village so he was given everything that he wanted or needed. When he was young, a group of priests were walking through his village singing songs of praise and he was so fascinated that he followed them to the monastery gates. A while later he decided to join this group of priests and was ordained as a priest in 580 when he

was thirty years old. Mochuda was very close to his head priest and took his name, Carthage. Later on young Carthage founded a monastery for young priests and he lived there for forty years. Carthage was an inspirational church leader who set up a

monastery that attracted 1000 young men to the priesthood. He set up a school that produced many excellent scholars and the school became famous around the country for encouraging a love of learning.

Later in life, Carthage was consecrated Bishop of Lismore, Ireland. He died on May, 14 th 637. After his death the church and school were named St Carthage’s in his honour.

From our Assistant Principal Miss Amanda Egan In each newsletter this term I will be sharing some information with you regarding student digital citizenship and online safety. This is to continue the conversation started during our Cyber Safety Parent Information Evening last term and to support the upcoming Family Online Safety Agreement Workshops. As a school community we want to continue to work with our students so that we can teach them how to be responsible digital citizens who engage positively, know their online world and choose consciously. Please consider attending one of our Family Online Safety Agreement workshops in the coming weeks. What is Digital Citizenship? Digital citizenship is about confident and positive engagement with digital technology. A digital citizen is a person with the skills and knowledge to effectively use digital technologies to participate in society, communicate with others and create and consume digital content.

Tips for Being a Digital Parent from the eSafety Commissioner. 1. Be engaged, open and supportive Get involved. Share online time with your children as part of family life. Play games together. Talk about favourite apps, games or websites.

Keep lines of communication open. Ask about their online experiences, who they are talking to and whether they are having any issues.

Reassure your child they can always come to you, no matter what. Let them know you will not cut off internet access if they report feeling uncomfortable or unsafe when online — this is a real concern that may stop your child from communicating with you openly.

If you notice a change in behaviour or mood, talk to your child about it. If you are concerned, consider seeking professional help from your GP or therapist.

2. Set some rules

Set age-appropriate rules for devices and online access, with consequences for breaking them.

Seek your child’s input — this will help them understand risks. As they get older you can review your rules.

Consider creating a family online safety contract as a way to help you agree on the rules, and renegotiate it as required.

The consequences for breaking the rules should be clear and should mean something to your child.

Consider making some ‘rules for parents’ too — and stick to them! Model behaviour that you would like to see.

3. Use the available technology

Get to know the devices you and your children use and set them up for privacy and online safety. Take advantage of parental controls to monitor and control screen time and access to content in ways appropriate to your child’s age and experience. See our guide to taming the technology.

Choose apps and games carefully, taking age ratings and consumer advice into account.

You can find out more about the apps and games that your children are playing by going to https://esafety.gov.au/esafety-information/games-apps-and-social-networking. Targeted Advice for Families with Children aged 5 to 12 For kids aged 5 to 12, it is important to:

Keep the computer or device in an area of your home that can be supervised. And check in regularly with your child to see what they are viewing.

Stay engaged with their online activity. If they agree, consider setting up your own accounts with the sites they use most so you can see how they work and understand the risks.

Explore the online world with them to help establish that this is not just a solitary activity. Play games with them.

Think about social media readiness. Most social media sites require users to be at least 13 years of age before they can register, although some sites are created especially for children under 13. See if are they old enough?

Encourage respect and empathy. Teach them to avoid sharing or posting things that may upset others. See good habits start young.

Start building resilience. Teach your child that there are ways they can deal with material that worries or frightens them. This includes immediately telling you or another trusted adult of any concerns or uncomfortable material. See good habits start young.

REMEMBER TO:

Review your rules as your child grows older:

Be clear about how much time they can spend online, the apps they can use, the websites they can visit and what they can share or post online.

Ensure your own devices are protected by a password or pin.

Use parental control tools appropriate for the age and experience of your child. Be upfront about this and get your child on board. Let them know that these can be reviewed and changed as they get older and they continue to demonstrate responsible behaviour.

Consider installing a ‘child-friendly’ search engine that will allow them to explore a limited number of sites.

If you shop at Woolworths we are asking that you collect these stickers for us so that we can purchase resources for the school. For every $10 you spend you will receive a sticker. Every sticker helps us to earn points that we can redeem for school equipment. The Earn and Learn program runs from now until June 25th. It would be great if you could ask family members and friends if they could collect their stickers for us. There is a box in the School Office where you can place your stickers.

Canteen Survey The St Carthage’s School Canteen follows the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy guidelines which are based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines. The NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy outlines food and drinks permitted for sale through canteens in NSW. These foods fall into two categories everyday and occasional foods which are labelled on the our Canteen Price List. We are wanting to get some feedback on the Canteen with regards to how often you use the canteen and on the items being sold. Family School Partnership - COMMUNITY CONVERSATION 1

Positive relationships are at the heart of growing student wellbeing and achievement. In developing these relationships our school uses the Diocesan Family School Partnership Statement in developing directions and goals in this area. In gathering the ‘voice’ of families, a COMMUNITY CONVERSATION was held in Term 1 to which all families and carers were invited. Parents, staff and students met together to discuss what were seen to be valuable outcomes for students at St Carthage’s. First, there was agreement around what we all valued about student outcomes. Everyone agreed to that. Second, it was also important to gather the unique perspective and ‘voice’ of students in developing Annual Goals. Therefore, a series of interviews will be held with students to listen to their views on (1) what helps their learning and (2) how their learning might be better assisted. These interviews are being planned by our school Wellbeing Team in cooperation with the Catholic School Office. COMMUNITY CONVERSATION 2 As a result of the success of our first COMMUNITY CONVERSATION, a further COMMUNITY CONVERSATION is planned for June 11 from 6-7:30 in the School Hall with a focus on communication. We have invited Janita Thomson and our Parent Assembly representatives to assist during the evening. Once more, we will send an invitation to all families to be a part of this endeavour. If you would like to attend please keep this date clear! Class Parents and Monthly Cuppas for parents and Carers Class Parents help connect families to our school and to other parents and they might plan and organise weekend playdates at local parks, welcome new families to our school, and support class teachers. If you’re keen to learn more,

please contact Helen Sandstorm on 0403 757 425 and/or meet with other Class Parents over a cuppa this Wednesday (May 8) from 3:15 in the School Hall. If you are unable to attend at this time please contact Helen on 0403 757 425 or myself to get an update on the activities occurring. Thank you to those Class Parents, families and Parent Assembly members who organised a cuppa and cake on the first day of this Term for all parents. We had such a great time it was decided to hold a cuppa and cake monthly! The purpose is just to relax, meet and chat. Watch for information and

dates about these. Butterflies! You may have been lucky enough to see some of the beautiful butterflies around our school grounds in the first week of Term. These were a timely reminder to the children of the important Easter message of new life!

A big thank you to the Yr 5 students who acted out the Stations of the Cross for our entire school last Term. Teachers led their class from Station to Station where Yr 5 students narrated and acted out these important parts of the Passion of Jesus Christ. Year 3 - Walking and praying the Labyrinth

Thanks to the Yr 3 teachers and Helen Hunter from the CSO who led Year 3 children through walking and praying the Labyrinth in the beautiful sunshine across from Trinity College late last Term. The Labyrinth is an ancient prayer which has so many positive dimensions and was the prayer form chosen by Yr 3 teachers to explore with students. A perfect preparation before celebrating their first experience of the Sacrament of Reconciliation! Yr 2 - Praying the Examen Thanks to Yr 2 teachers and Helen Hunter from the CSO who led Year 2 children through praying the Awareness Examen. This is a prayer form chosen by Yr 3 teachers to explore with the students. The Examen is an ancient prayer and goes through 5 stages: An awareness of God, Thanksgiving, Forgiveness and making an intention to be more like Jesus.

Sacraments of Reconciliation and Confirmation Thank you so much to the families, teachers and Fathers Bing (our school Chaplain) and Jim who gathered together late last term to ensure that the children’s first experience of Reconciliation was so positive. A reminder that a Parish Enrolment Form and Confirmation Card for this Sacrament is completed for each candidate (student). These forms were given out at the information evening for Confirmation and may be obtained from the School Office or Danny Hatchman. Our Parish

Confirmation evening is on June 6.

Incitāre Family Night Our Incitare students joined with Jo Kelly from our Parent Assembly and Tayla Bennett to make their Family Prayer Pots to be given to families on the evening of our Incitare Family Night. Families are invited to come for a sharing of the children ’s learning and a beautiful shared dinner on May 13 from 6pm to 7:30pm. Incitāre means to stir up, incite, urge, spur, egg on - when the Holy Spirit comes into our lives we are incited to spread the good news to all we encounter.

Students will be selected, based on the following:

Additional information about the St Carthage’s Athletics Carnival will be sent home in Week 3. If you are able to help at the Athletics Carnival, please indicate this on the note and return it to school.

Baseball Over the Easter weekend (20th – 24th April), Lachlan O'Sullivan and Wesley Wilford travelled to Sydney to compete in the Little League Baseball, NSW Country State Championships. The boys participated in a number of close games throughout the competition, including a nail-biting final that came down to the last innings. After winning the Country State Championships, Lachlan and Wesley will compete in the Little League National Championships (the top 16 teams in the country) which will be held in Lismore from the 5th to the 10th of June. Congratulations on this astounding achievement! We wait with anticipation to hear the results.

Polding AFL Trials On Wednesday 3rd April, Django Hudson-Sheaffe travelled to Newcastle to trial for the Polding AFL team. We congratulate Django on reaching this high level of competition. Year 5 and Year 6 students attended this trial, so Django will have the opportunity to trial again in 2020. Keep up the training, we are extremely proud of you.

Congratulations to Timmy Auld (Football), Lani Blunn and Jimmy Bradford (Hockey) for

gaining selection in the Polding Team for their sport. We wish them luck at their respective NSW PSSA Carnivals which will be held at different times throughout Term 2.

Richmond Zone Cross Country Despite the unsettled weather, the Richmond Zone Cross Country was a great success. Rain on the days leading up to the Cross Country meant that the track was muddy and showers throughout the day only added to the difficulties. Congratulations to all the students who battled through these conditions to be exemplary representatives of our school. Due to the effort of all students, St Carthage’s was placed second on the day. 15 St Carthage’s students gained selection in the Richmond Zone Cross Country Team: Michael Bullpitt, Lara Carlson, James Cittolin, Sienna Gorman, Dacry Heffernan, Rue Heffernan, Zara

Hellyar, Elissa Hills, Django Hudson-Sheaffe, Jonah Hudson-Sheaffe, Sammie Jones, Layla MacFarlane, Akony Maciek-Rong, Charlotte-Rose McEwan and Kate Wolton. It is not possible for our students to attend these events without the help of our supportive staff!

St Carthage’s Intensive Swimming Program The St Carthage’s K-4 Intensive Swimming Program commences on Monday 13th May. As it is a component of the New South Wales PDHPE Syllabus, it is strongly recommended that all students participate in the Intensive Swimming Program. If you are yet to finalise payments with Mr Whitney, can you please do so as soon as possible. Please ensure that your child brings the appropriate items (swimmers, towel, cap and goggles) to school each day of their program.
