When I retired in 1999, I expected my wife to do the same soon after. She didn’t, and even-
tually I found myself going around the house talking to myself. Well, almost. When I said I needed compan-ionship, my sweetie said I should do something with my friends. What friends? During my teaching years, I had often taught night classes and had never gotten to-gether with guys and developed any close friendships.
Finally, in early 2008, I spotted a notice in the Grosse Pointe News about a speaker from the Yankee Air Museum appearing at the SMC, and decided to go hear him. I knew a little about the SMC, because my late neighbor, Frank Welcenbach, had often told me about the old guys he had lunch with. I was only 70 at that time, much too young to consider joining, although I always enjoyed visiting with the elderly.
I showed up in a sweatshirt and suntans, and proba-bly looked confused about where to sit when I entered
the ballroom, but the fellows in the Choral Group invited me to sit with them. Maybe they thought I looked like a prospective member. They were definitely fun to chat with.
I also enjoyed the speaker, and afterward I connected with a few members I knew, Phil Hessburg, Bob Vogler, Roger Sulad, and perhaps others. Before I knew it, I had filled out an application.
I continued attending, now in proper attire, and a luncheon or two later, on April 8, 2008, I learned that I had been accepted. That same day, after lunch, Bob Vogler told me, “You know, we like to have all the members involved. There are two openings you might be interested in, field trip organizer or secretary.” I picked secretary.
After a little more than two years in that position, I

was amazed to hear that I had been nominated for sec-ond vice president, and that I would be “in the chairs” leading to the presidency. Whoa! What were those guys thinking? I emailed John Prost and said I had been in SMC only two years, I wasn’t experienced, and certainly there were other guys who deserved this honor more than I did. Shouldn’t this go to someone who had done great things for the Club or had been in it for a longer time or was actually at least a little bit famous?
John convinced me that the leadership really wanted me to do this, and I concluded that the American dream was real. A kid from a small town (graduating class of 25), a guy with little experience in leadership or running anything, could be accepted by profes-sionals and titans of industry as the president of their terrific Club. Boy! This is a really great thing, but I’m getting in over my head. What about that, John? I saved his email. He said, “I believe that many feel the Pres is too much work. That is not true...all will help you.”
OK. My term is starting. I’m writing my first Presi-dent’s Message. There are positions that need to be
filled, and there will other things I need help with. Right now, I feel a little like the proverbial post
turtle. Please show me that I’m not one. Don’t know what a post turtle is? Here’s the story:
An old rancher is talking about politics with a young man from the city. He compares a local politi-cian to a “post turtle”. The young man doesn’t under-stand and asks him what a post turtle is.
The old man says, “When you’re driving down a country road and you see a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a post turtle. You know he didn’t get up there by himself. He doesn’t belong there; he can’t get anything done while he’s up there; and you just wonder what kind of a numbskull put him up there.”
So you see? I didn’t get up here all by myself. I will do my very best to serve the Club, but I call on all of you to help me while I’m up here.
And what about my original reason for joining SMC? That turned out really well, fellows. Now I have lots of friends to do things with, and I’m stick-ing with you, even though I now will also spend more time with my wife, who finally did retire this summer.

Detroit RiverfrontHistory and Vision
Luncheon Meeting - August 14, 2012 Speaker: Faye Alexander Nelson, Pres. & CEO Detroit Riverfront ConservancyIntroduction by: Ken Van Dellen Invocation by: Fr. Larry Webber Capuchin MonasteryReported by: Ken Van Dellen
Ms. Nelson began by en-couraging us to enjoy
the appealing brochure that she had distributed throughout the dining room. It included a map of the Riverfront, with photos of the various features between the RenCen and Belle Isle. This information, and more, is avail-able on the Riverfront Conser-vancy website at http://www.detroitriverfront.org/.
Nelson said, “The story of the Detroit Riverfront Conser-vancy is one of community, reinvigoration, reinvention, and improving the quality of life.” She went on to point out what the riverfront previously was like, reminding us of vacant lots, debris, burned-out cars, and abandoned structures.
No doubt, many of us can remember viewing our riverfront from Windsor’s attractive riverfront park, and seeing cement silos and windowless warehouses on this side, hardly a view that would entice visitors to Windsor to come over for a visit. Some of you, like me, must have seen the appealing waterfront areas in New Orleans or San Diego, Mallory Square in Key West, or closer to home, Charlevoix or Port Huron, and wondered why we couldn’t have something like that.
Finally, in 2003, the city of Detroit, joined by Gen-eral Motors and the Kresge Foundation, led the way to creating the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. Together, foundations, corporations, and community addressed the need to restore our riverfront.
After reviewing some of this history, Nelson showed a video of the development of the Riverfront. It showed how this project could serve as a catalyst for economic develop-ment in the city. It illustrated the features of the three miles of development already com-pleted on the East Riverfront, from the RenCen nearly to Belle Isle, and discussed plans for the stretch past the Uniroy-al site to Gabriel Richard Park, as well as those for the West Riverfront, reaching another two miles from the RenCen to the Ambassador Bridge.
“Millions of people visit the Riverfront each year to attend festivals, participate in educational and recreational
programs, see concerts, and join in walks and runs,” Nelson remarked. She also noted the media confer-ence on July 23, at which Governor Snyder spoke and the final phase of construction along the East River-front was announced. This will include connecting the Riverwalk to its green spaces, plazas, and parks, all the way to Richard Park, make improvements to that park, completely redevelop Mt. Elliott Park, and con-nect the Riverwalk and associated amenities east and west of Chene Park, as well as the Uniroyal site (when remediated).
A feature at the new Mt. Elliott Park and Pavilion will be an interactive Great Lakes shipwreck-themed “kid-friendly” water feature with various water sprays.
October 2012 7
Continued from page 6These are being designed to be accessible to those “of all ages and physical challenges.”
The West Riverfront is the next phase of the project. It is expected to have features and amenities similarity to the East Riverfront. Nelson said, “In a short amount of time, the Riverfront is becoming a catalyst for eco-nomic development, attracting companies, employees
and new residents.”She closed by stating, “This is your Riverfront,
gentlemen. It belongs to each and every one of you.” During the Q & A time, she encouraged us to contrib-ute to this renewal project by becoming a member of the Friends group, or by buying a brick or bench.

The SMC has not sold the Entertainment book for some years. However, once again SMC member Tom Coles, M.D. is selling
the Entertainment book to raise money for important scientific research regarding mental illnesses.
These illnesses include depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia,
autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and anxiety disorders like obsessive-compulsive and post-traumatic stress disorders.
The books are $30 with $6 going to the Brain & Behavior Research
Foundation, awarding NARSAD grants. This charity is unique because two family foundations pay all
overhead costs, allowing 100% of donations for research to go to research.

On China by Henry Kissinger
Readers saw this book as wonderful, tedious, enlightening, and guiding or both. The writer
picks up on a pre-World War I story of a British For-eign Officer virtually bringing on the war saying it was Germany’s existence as a growing power rather than what it did that rendered it incompatible. In our time, Kissinger sees China continuing to develop its econo-my and pursuing a broad range of interest in Asia and beyond as not a prospect that dictates the confrontation that led to the First World War. Per the author, United States cannot fence the Chinese in and they cannot exclude us from the Asia Pacific. The two need ask: Where will a conflict take us? Vision is needed as Kissinger sees neither as capable of defining terms for victory in a war.
He would seek a Sino-American relationship that is “co-evolution.” Both countries are to pursue domestic imperatives, cooperating where possible, and adjust their relations to minimize conflict. He acknowledges that the current and recent presidents have been of this
mind and with what success. There apparently has been a variance in the success depending on the is-sue. The procedures in use are topical today.
The book jacket has a fine summary of the topics and situations that the author would have you come away from the book knowing. There is a collection of pictures of the political personages in China that the author came to know. Particularly interesting are the recorded conversations of the author with many of these people. One Reader acknowledged that his memory of Kissinger formed during the Vietnam War plays a role in his level of accepting what Mr. Kiss-inger writes.
The October read is THE CONFESSION by John
Grisham. The November read is IN MY TIME by Dick Cheney. The Meetings will be at Dan Beck’s home at 25 Rosyln, Grosse Pointe Shores, October 16th and November 20th from 5:00pm until 6:30pm. RSVP (313) 881-0322.
So, this man died and went to Heaven. St. Peter said, “Before I let you in, you have to pass a test.”Oh, no!” said the man.
St. Peter said, “Don’t worry. This is easy. Just answer this question: Who was God’s Son?”The man thought…finally he said, “Andy!”St. Peter said, “Andy?”The man said, “We sang it in church; ‘Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me, Andy tells me I am his own.”

Tech Club
Future of the Club
Fifteen members attended a meeting to discuss the future of the Tech Club. The meeting was
precipitated by the announcement of Ed Rowady that he would no longer be able to continue as our fearless leader.
A general discussion was held among those present regarding such things as member participation, meet-ing subjects, venues and types of meetings. A general feeling pervaded the discussion that perhaps the Tech Club’s original purpose has been fulfilled. When Ed started the Club some 10 years ago, there were fast and furious developments in many technological fields such as, but not limited to, cell phones, computers,
automobiles, etc. Many of us did not have the time or the wherewithal to stay abreast of what was going on around us. With the Internet all of that has changed. We are now confronted with information overload. The original purpose of the Club has been replaced by the Internet.
Many ideas for possible future meeting were pro-posed and bandied about, but the main sticking point of the discussion continued to elude a solution.......that of finding a new leader. When it was all said and done the general consensus was that we agreed to place the Club in suspended animation. The Club has not been eliminated. Should someone step forward to take the
reins, that person will have the full sup-port of all the members. The membership records will be maintained, and it is left up to individual members, if they would like to have a meeting in the future set up around a particular subject.
On a lighter note, Ed Rowady was presented with a talking clock/radio as a memento of his years of service to the group. Ed promised that he would continue to be around and would be available for counsel and advice on any subject. He also promised that he would take several of the meeting ideas to the Board of Directors of SMC of which he is now a member.
Ed Rowady honored for 10 years of leading the Tech Club
Every year, St. Peter conducted a tour down on earth. He told Virgin Mary, “This year, I’m going to survey all your shrines and
compare them to the shrines I’ve seen in previous years.” He took his tour, and visited shrines around the world before he came back to Heaven and reported to Mary, “I’ve got great news! There are more people at
your shrines than anyone else’s. But I noticed one thing – every single statue por-trayed you with a sad expression and your face. Why is that?” And Mary said, “You might not understand my feelings.” And St. Peter said, “Now, Mary. I’ve had many people tell me their innermost feelings – can’t you open up to me?” And Mary said, “Well, you see, Peter…I really wanted a girl.”
