SWA August, 2014 Newsletter Co-President’s Article:

The Annual SWA Parish Rummage Sale was a huge success. The bottom line numbers have not come in yet but I heard that before expenses, we made over $7,000.00. This would not have happened without the hard work of our members, the Knights of Columbus and other folks from our community. The weather should cool a bit which will be a blessing to some. Congratulations to the hard worker bees of the rummage sale. It makes it all worthwhile when you hear that your hard work has paid off. The coffers are filled back up meaning a lot of people will benefit. We have suspended the “Spotlight on our Members” segment until we receive more of the biography forms filled out by our new members. Until then, we will try to find articles of interest to feature. August 25th - A United States Holiday Women's Equality Day

This day is meant to commemorate the day when the 19th

amendment was passed in 1920 giving women the right to vote. It also is a day to look back on all women's rights issues and progress.

This is a United States holiday. It is typically celebrated by

government, educational, and women's organizations. Various organizations do different things to commemorate the day. This

includes displays showing the history of women's rights and suffrage in the United States, programs to point out current

inequalities, and conferences discussing women's rights.

The fight for women's rights goes back many years. Women such as Susan B. Anthony fought for the right for women to vote the same as men. This is called women's suffrage. She founded the

National Women's Suffrage Association in 1869 in order to organize the fight for the right to vote. The amendment to the US Constitution to allow women to vote was first proposed in 1878, but it took many years until it was finally passed. On August 26,

1920 the 19th amendment became a part of the US Constitution and women were permitted to vote.

In 1971, Congresswoman Bella Abzug introduced legislation to

Congress for an official Women's Equality Day. It soon passed and the day became an official holiday.

Fun Facts about Women's Equality Day

Other early leaders in the fight for women's rights included Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

The first convention to discuss the fight for suffrage, or voting rights, was held in 1849 in Seneca Falls, New York.

Women became an important part of the industrial work force during World War II when women were needed to work hard jobs

in factories building tanks, weapons, and planes. March is considered Women's History Month.

The first woman to run as a vice-presidential candidate for a major party was Geraldine Ferraro. Her birthday was August 26th.

There are actually still 15 states that have not ratified the 19th amendment.

Rummage Sale 2014 Here’s where it all begins… Working in advance of the actual sale, on 5 hot days in July, several of the Snows Women’s Auxiliary members gathered to set up for the big event. As you can see, donations were plentiful and the comradery was abundant.

SATURDAY, the BIG day: Father Tony stops by to give his blessings for a successful day of sales.

SUNDAY, half day and super sale day-

This is the day that the ladies concentrate on getting as many items sold as possible. For $5.00, a customer gets a garbage bag given to them and they are told they can fill it to the brim with anything they want. The Rummage Sale closes down promptly at 12:00 noon and the Ladies and the Knights get to work loading the St. Vincent trucks with all the remaining items except the books. The books get picked up by Grass Roots Books. The books are given to them because they lend SWA their truck to go pick up donations. The ladies above were photographed after everything was boxed and loaded. They were happily exhausted, knowing that their hard work paid off. The bottom picture shows Leslie making Justine’s granddaughter, Amber Stegall an Honorable Member of the Snows Women’s Auxiliary for all the hard work she put in before, during and after the sale.

2014 Officer Installation for the Knights of Columbus-

In addition to the Rummage Sale on Sunday, the Knights of Columbus had a ceremony swearing in the officers for the 2014-2015 year. Father Tony was there to give a blessing for the success of the new officers.
