We welcome our Year 8 students back from their camp last week, where I am sure a significant amount of personal growth will have occurred as they return to classes. I had the privilege of attending the camp for a day, to see the students in action, and how action packed it was. Booklist Requirements 2017 College Booklist Expectations

All items included in the Sacred Heart College Booklist are required to support a robust curriculum. Careful

consideration is given to the cost incurred by parents/guardians for the purchase of requisite textbooks and

materials. Affordable options have been included to provide parents/guardians with as much choice as

possible. Teaching staff are encouraged to ensure book-listed texts and workbooks are utilised to their

fullest extent. It is therefore a College expectation that parents/guardians will ensure their children begin the

school year with all book-listed textbooks.

Traditional textbook or eBook?

A combination of print and eBook textbooks are book-listed for students. In addition to financial considera-

tions, parents should also consider the following when deciding between the various options:

The preferred learning style of your child

The weight of the school bag

Their maturity with regards to device use and management

COLLEGE NEWS

MUSIC NOTES - Mr Terry Carrick

DIRECTOR OF STAFF FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT - Mrs Mel Bratovic

At Sacred Heart College, our staff are constantly ‘on the go’ taking advantage of professional development opportunities that will allow them to stay abreast of the sophisticated array of knowledge,

skills and attributes required in the face of constant social, economic, technological and educational change.

Ms Linda Letten, LOTE Teacher

I attended the Osaka Melbourne Educators’ Forum on Thursday 27 October 2016 at the Melbourne Town Hall. The forum was facilitated by the City of Melbourne for representatives from the Education arm of the Osaka Convention and Tourism Bureau. The Osaka representatives provided information on the free support they offer for school exchanges between Osaka and Australia. Our Japanese exchange students who visited Sacred Heart earlier this year are from Osaka. Mr Paul Tucker, our Japanese Teacher, is working on developing a partnership for an ongoing exchange program with the school. The representatives from Osaka indicated that they are more than happy to provide additional support for our program, especially for any groups visiting Osaka. The depth and warmth of the Osaka – Melbourne sister city relationship, which dates back 38 years, was more than evident at the event, as was the City’s commitment to facilitating educational exchange. The forum was followed by a lovely reception, which proved a great opportunity to network with the visitors from Osaka and other local Japanese language educators.

The end of the year is always a hectic time, especially in our Music Department. Our Unit 4 VET students recently undertook their performance assessments, where each 20 minute performance is worth 50% of their total study score – very intensive indeed! Our students performed magnificently, due to excellent preparation. In all other years levels, rehearsal for performance is also underway – great sounds are coming from all ensembles! On Monday 7 November, students who have applied for a Music Scholarship will undertake scholarship auditions. Mrs Catherine Hutchison and I will see 58 applicants performing individually, so we expect a very busy day! Also on Monday evening, our Friends Of the Music Program (FOMP) will meet in the Staff room at 7pm to discuss our upcoming events. Any parents who are looking for a great way to accrue Service Scheme hours are very welcome to attend – please email [email protected] if you would like more information. Forms are now available for enrolling in the Instrumental Program for 2017. If you’ve never learned an instrument before, here’s a great opportunity to try something new! Forms are available from the Music Office and the Main Reception. Please keep Tuesday 22 November available for our annual Music Leaders’ Concert, featuring performances that represent all of our Instrumental teachers and from our ensembles! The concert will start at 7pm in the Theatre!

Remembrance Day – 11 November

They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old,

Age shall not weary them nor the years con-demn

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS AT SHC!

National Female Diversity Championships - Loree Newton During the last school holidays, myself and 11 other girls from multicultural backgrounds went to Shepparton to represent Victoria in the Female Diversity Championships. Our group was selected out of 50 girls across the State. We were tested, not only on our football abilities, but our leadership skills as well. We made it to the Grand Final playing against Queensland who kicked two goals in the last five minutes and ended up beating us by 11 points. All the participants became really close in just three days, which none of us had expected or was even prepared for. It was a great experience that we will never forget. We grew as footballers and coaches alike. Women’s AFL has a massive future ahead of it!

Outdoor Education Experience Camp LaTrobe University Bendigo Campus - Brittani-Leigh Anderson 11C

Over the spring holidays, I applied for, and was fortunate enough to attend an Outdoor Experience with LaTrobe University to the Murray/Goulburn River and Barmah area. There were ten others from all around Victoria and four third-year university students doing the Outdoor Education Course at the Bendigo campus. We paddled for five days around the area, learning about the environment and the Yorta Yorta Nation. This experience was very valuable as you have five days with university students that you can ask anything of and questions were strongly encouraged! They helped students such as myself, sharing with us their knowledge on topics we don’t fully understand. The experience is also valuable from a social aspect as you get to meet new people, and by the end of the five day trip, you become a miniature family. It also allows you to have an insight into the Outdoor Education Course at LaTrobe. I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in this subject to apply next year, as it’s a magnificent experience which I've been lucky to participate in twice!

National Bandana Day Each year the College supports young people living with cancer, by offering bandanas for purchase. This year a small group of Year 7 students stepped up and took the box of bandanas and pens around to students before school and at recess. They sold out before 10.30am! We will have to organise more boxes of bandanas next year. The students raised approximately $295.00. Well done!

Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids Conference - Ms Kirsty Ross On Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 October, Paul Tucker and myself were lucky enough to accompany eight of our Year 7 students to this wonderful conference. Kids Teaching Kids (KTK) is a school based education model that inspires young people to learn and care for their local environment. The KTK Learning Model uses ‘peer teaching and learning ‘ pedagogy – where the traditional role of teacher and student changes. The teachers become the facilitators and the students are empowered to take responsibility for their own learning. This was Sacred Heart College’s first time at the event so for this year we attended as participants and not presenters. After an early start to the day we caught a bus from Kyneton to North Melbourne then on to Melbourne University where we gathered with 550 other students from 80 other schools within the iconic Wilson Hall. To begin we were welcomed with speeches from the conference organisers, Melbourne University Sustainability Coordinator, and the Melbourne Water CEO who spoke about the many career pathways available in this area and who clearly respected the students by addressing them as future leaders in the field of Water and Environmental management and Climate Change. It was great for the students to learn about the connection between vision, policy and action. The key issues of Sustainability and Water management were then addressed by students from a variety of Primary and Secondary schools, who did an amazing job presenting big and complex issues in very engaging ways . Some notable workshops were ‘Plastics not Fantastic’, ‘Working with Waste Water’ and ‘Lets make the Great Barrier Reef Great again’. At the end of the day we were taken on a tour of Melbourne University to see its sustainability features. It gave us a great insight into what can be done with a combination of good research and the will to embrace change. Solar panels, recycling systems, waste to energy processing machines, water catchment, conscious landscaping, and food production were all on show. On Monday night we were treated to a gala dinner in Wilson Hall with more presentations, amazing food, a very funny magic show, all topped off with energetic dancing to the school band from Carranballac College. After a restful night at the North Melbourne YHA, we set off for Collingwood Children’s Farm on Tuesday morning. The activities continued with more of a ‘hands on’ land and water management focus. One of the activities looked at keeping a worm farm, others addressed making a terrarium, vegetable growing and integrated land management. It was very inspiring to be at a conference with so many young people and adults where there was such great consciousness regarding waste, water, energy and vision for the future. The PA system was powered by the girls from Melbourne Girls College (MGC) on their solar energy producing bikes - the result of an award winning STEAM project (MGC is STEAM powered but not by Coal!) and the amount of waste produced from the event was zero !!!

Our students all remarked on how wonderful it was to be treated with such respect and how engaging it was to be taught by their peers, and have come back with renewed enthusiasm for sustainability within their communities and at school. Sacred Heart College will definitely be back next year taking on a role as presenters. Thank you to Marika Payne for her support as Science coordinator in making this happen. It was awesome.

Great Victorian Bike Ride (GVBR) 2016 Halls Gap to Geelong

Explore the extraordinary On Saturday 26 November 19 SHC students, three staff members and four parents/helpers head off to Halls Gap to start the GVBR as part of our College team for 2016. The 19 students from Year 9 started the process back in Term 1 when they applied to be part of the initial squad. From over 50 applicants a squad of 25 was selected and students learnt road rules, cycling skills, riding in a group etiquette and bike maintenance. From this they progressed to cycling fitness training one night a week after school during Terms 2, 3 and 4 as well as training by themselves each week. The 540 km journey will take the SHC team from Halls Gap to Geelong going through Dunkeld, Mortlake, The 12 Apostles, Apollo Bay, Bellbrae, Queenscliff and finishing in Geelong. There are seven days of riding with a rest day in the middle in Apollo Bay. We will average of 77km per day. It should be an amazing adventure for all the approximately 4000 people involved. The inspiration for our ride is the memory of Di Taylor. Di was an inspirational teacher and the driving force behind the SHC GVBR team for many, many years. The 2016 SHC GVBR team members are: David Ash, Stuart Beckett, Caitlyn Brown, Tessa Burley, Matthew Cassidy, Maggie Clune, Liam Duffy, Sophie Ellen, Angeleah Hale, Jacqueline Hanson, James Inkster, Richard Jefferson, Loree Newton, Bradley Nugent, Cooper Ormerod, Jordan Savoia, Ellen Smith, Lachlan Sutton, Ashleigh Wilson Our teachers and helpers are: Craig Darroch, Brett Gardner, Vincent Lakey, Christine Brown, Dale Clune, Victoria Fairbairn, Dan Hale, Lauretta Hanson, Adrian Hocking, Daryl Port.

Student Health Information Ms Jalna Holmes,

Health Centre Coordinator

Beat the Bite! After the recent floods and heavy rain, it has provided mosquitoes with the perfect breeding ground, hence the increase in their numbers and the number of bites we are receiving. Ways to beat the bite:

Cover up, wear light coloured lose fitting clothing when outdoors.

Use mosquito repellents containing DEET on exposed skin while outdoors.

Make sure there is no stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed around your home by emptying flower pots, tyres, buckets, tins, bird baths and pet bowls weekly.

Does your child have Asthma?

Sacred Heart College is an Asthma friendly school and takes the treatment of our students with Asthma very seriously. Changes to the College’s Asthma Policy have been made and will be implemented in 2017. All students with Asthma must complete an annual Asthma Management Plan and have this signed by their doctor. These plans then need to be uploaded to Care Monkey and passed onto the College. They will be held by the Health Care Coordinator. If the College doesn’t receive the annual Asthma Management Plan completed by the doctor within the first four weeks of the new school year, students will not be permitted to attend classes until the College has re-ceived the completed Plan. Copies of the Plans are available from the College’s website under enrol with us/ further links/ policies and forms.

Does your child have Anaphylaxis? Sacred Heart College fully complies with the Ministerial order 706 surrounding Anaphylaxis and Schools. Changes to the College’s Anaphylaxis Policy have been made and are as follows: Staff will check that the student has their EpiPen in their bag before going on the excursion. If not, the teacher reserves the right to refuse attendance on the excursion The Health Care Coordinator keeps a record of the students EpiPen expiry dates through EpiClub. EpiClub generates reminders of EpiPen expiry dates held at the College one month and two months prior to expiry. The Health Care Coordinator will forward these reminders onto parents via email. If after these two reminders the EpiPen expires, the student concerned will not be able to leave the College premises until an in date EpiPen is received. If you have any questions about the changes to either the Asthma or Anaphylaxis policies please don’t’ hesitate to contact me at the College on 54211200
