Dear Families,

What a fabulous evening we had last night watching our

students star in ‘Clowning Around’. Congratulations to all

our HWPS Circus Performers – they were amazing! Our

students showcased different individual and team skills

during the performance - from diablo to devil sticks and

towers to totem poles. The audience was enthralled by the

skills, talents, team work and ‘have a go’ attitude displayed

by the performers. We would like to thank everyone

involved in the lead up and presentation of the performance

Clowning Around!

Fabulous Fashion

Paris, New York, Milan, London, and now Hawthorn West –

the new fashion capital of the world!

At our assembly on Monday, we had front row seats to a one

off event - the 5/6 fashion show. The show celebrated the

creative fashion designs by our 5/6 emerging designers.

These colourful and unique designs were developed during

the term in the HWPS Fashion House (Art Room) under the

guidance of our ‘in house’ designer Melanie Jacobsen. These

fabulous outfits are now on display in the entrance foyer to

the school.

NAPLAN

We are delighted to share our school’s results for the 2016

NAPLAN testing. As you can see from the data below, all

our results are significantly higher than the state mean in all

curriculum areas assessed.

At Hawthorn West we always strive for excellence and we

are very proud of the teaching and learning programs that our

teachers provide to cater for all of our students.

Cyber Safety – “Respectful & Responsible”

Cyber bullying involves the use of information and

communication technologies (ICT) to support deliberate,

repeated, and hostile behaviour by an individual or group that

is intended to harm others (Bill Belsey, cyberbullying.org).

This form of bullying is usually committed using tablets,

mobile phones or the Internet and includes such activities as:

Posting hurtful messages on social networking sites.

Sending repeated unwanted messages either by SMS,

instant messaging (IM) or email.

Excluding someone from an online group.

Creating fake social networking profiles or websites that are

mean and hurtful.

Our students need to know that they can tell someone if they

are being cyber-bullied - ignoring the problem won’t make it

go away, and there are steps that they can take to address the

cyber-bullying. What is most important is that they tell

someone.

At HWPS we care. We are safe, responsible, honest, respectful and ready to learn.

At HWPS we are committed to educating our students about

being safe, smart and responsible online. We encourage you

to closely monitor the computer / mobile device access your

child has at home. Discuss internet issues and share internet

experiences. Keep the computer in a public area in the home

and set ground rules for the use of the computer and other

mobile devices. Reinforce safety messages and cyber rules.

Remind your children about their privacy and the privacy of

others and ensure both you and your children understand

laws relating to copyright, privacy, hacking and obscenity.

Be careful of what is published online. Often our students

are unaware of the legal, moral and ethical issues related to

online activity.

There are rules in place and they are to protect children. The

legal age to use some accounts is 13 and by signing up to

these accounts when you are not 13 is breaking the law.

Some of our students openly admit to having these accounts

and our staff are very concerned at the unusually high

number of students who have accounts on apps such as:

Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Kik.

As we know children are quick to take up the latest

developments in technology and are often the first to know

when something new comes along. They are growing up in

an ever-changing technological environment and can have a

lot of fun doing so. The Internet and associated technologies

offer many benefits to young people. They can communicate

with friends and family from all over the world, access all

types of information for school projects, and express

themselves creatively, all with the click of a button.

It is vital to talk to your children about behaving

appropriately online and with their mobile devices. They

need to be aware that there are real world consequences for

their virtual world actions.

It is important that students know that we want them to be

able to communicate online – but we want them to be doing

it in safe, respectful and responsible ways. Education, open

communication and support from home and school is the

key.

Congratulations to:

All our students and teachers who have had a fabulous

Book Week – sharing stories, exploring new books and

dressing up as a Book Character for our parade.

Darcy McKenna - who has been selected to represent

Victoria in the Melbourne Rebels U12 State Team

(Rugby). Darcy is off to Adelaide to compete during the

upcoming holidays. We wish him all the best.

All HWPS students who represented our school at the

District Athletics competition held at the Bill Sewart

Athletics track today.

Warm Regards,

Glenys and Justine

Well done to the Grade

competed at Division

against other schools

Ride/Walk/Scooter 2 School –

Wednesday 7th September

We will be having a Ride/walk/scooter to

school day on Wednesday morning in week 9.

This is a great opportunity for our school

community to get healthier and reduce our

carbon emissions. On arrival at school that

day, see a Green Team member at the BBQ,

collect your sticker and put your name into

the raffle for a chance to win a prize.

In celebration of National Science Week the students explored the value and behaviour of water during their Science lessons last week. Students in Foundation, Grades 1 and 2 discussed the advantages of water and experimented with absorption to make water ‘walk’ uphill. You can check out the experiment we watched on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8YtroKjVxo. This week we’ll measure how much water can be

absorbed by paper towel and use eye droppers to develop our fine motor skills. Grades 3 to 6 students explored the process of water

desalination and examined the amount of fresh water on

Earth. FUN FACT: Only 3% of the Earth’s water is fresh,

why is more than 2% of this fresh water unable to be

used by us? This week we will draw scale drawings to

show the size of the Sun, Moon and Earth, we loved the

video
