Diana Gonzalez leads hikers up the Mt. Wilson Trail on the way to Jones Peak

A Provisional Hike to Jones Peak (and what is that, anyway?)

April-June 2018 Avenues • 3

By Mark Mitchell

On March 4, Diana Gonzalez led a hike as a provisional leader for the Sierra Club. On this outing, she suc-cessfully guided a group of hikers on a seven-mile journey to the summit of Jones Peak in the San Gabriel Mountains above Sierra Madre. This was her first official hike leading for the Club.

So how did Diana do? Very well, thank you. She informed the group of what to expect and what they needed to bring with them on the hike. She set a steady, appropriate pace, capably leading a number of people through varied and sometimes steep terrain from chaparral covered slopes to mixed forest. She reached the advertised destination at the top of Jones Peak where all were treated to great views—sweeping from Saddleback Mountain in OC, to DTLA, to the Pacific Ocean with Catalina and Santa Barbara islands, through the Santa Monica Mountains and even the southern part of the San Fernando Valley. Diana had mentioned great views in her trip description, but she exceeded expectations. Then she got everybody back to their cars at the trailhead.

Nobody got lost or died. We do have a ten-percent acceptable casualty ratio for our outings, so she passed the test on this score. Just kidding! (About the acceptable casu-alty ratio. Not about nobody getting lost or dying.)

Diana, welcome to a what we hope is a long career as a Sierra Club out-ings leader!

Now, for those of you who don't know, in order to become a leader for the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club, there are a few require-ments you have to meet. For an entry level leader, these include attending a leadership training seminar, participating in at least 5 experience trips, meeting a first aid training requirement, and leading an

outing as a provisional leader. This last requirement is simply to plan an outing, write-up a description of the outing to be published so as to notify potential participants, have the outing approved by an appropriate individual in the Club, and then lead the outing accompanied by another experienced leader who monitors how the provisional leader performs. After the outing is completed, both the provisional leader and the evaluating leader draft written evaluations of how the provisional leader did on the outing.

When an individual has completed these requirements, they have shown that they are qualified to lead outings in a competent and well-informed manner. The fact that all outings require two qualified leaders distinguishes Sierra Club outings from those that are run by many

other organizations. Having two such leaders helps ensure both a high quality experience (for instance in the place selected to explore, in the route followed, and in information shared about the natural environment being traversed and how it might be pro-tected) and a higher margin of safety.

While the steps to become a leader may sound daunting, they really aren't. And we'd love to have more leaders join our ranks so we can carry on the range of activities we conduct in our beloved wilderness and even expand them. If you want more information, please contact me or any other outing leader with whom you are already familiar. We'd be glad to help you start on the path Diana has just completed.

Here's a plug for taking the first step—enrolling in the Leadership Training Seminar. The next seminar is April 14. Another one will happen about six months later. Details below:

Take that first step and become a Leader!

Offered just twice a year, the next Sierra Club Angeles Chapter's Lead-ership Training Seminar is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, 2018. Apply by March 31 to guarantee a spot and learn all about the best leadership practices of our outings program. This all-day event covers group manage-ment, our ratings system, rules of conduct, safety and much more, from presentations, breakout groups and scenarios.

Pinnacles National ParkBy Marlen Mertz

The bracing nighttime temps, the exhilarating daytime hail (followed by partially sunny skies) and the intermittent first evening rain made this mid-March adventure even more exciting for the 30 intrepid hikers who joined the Pinnacles National Park four day outing. Everyone came prepared with both the right equipment and a positive atti-tude. In doing so, participants were rewarded with perfect hiking days and were able to see Pinnacles National Park in its entirety. All enjoyed the park's riparian areas, famous talus caves, enormous boulders wedged into narrow can-yons and the remarkable volcanic rock formations in the upper reaches of the park.

Nobody could count the number of condors we saw and some flew close and right over our heads to offer perfect views of the largest land bird in America.

At 8:00 AM Saturday morning, for a second year in a row, a park ranger joined us in our campsite to give a private one hour presentation on condors, answering our many questions. This park is part of the California Condor recovery program and is a release site for captive bred

condors. These majestic birds have successfully been brought back from the brink of extinction.

Daytime hikes ranged from 8 to 12 miles and our trek-kers were rewarded with lavish happy hours and a potluck dinner on Saturday night. Evenings were also spent at the park's campfire talks followed by our own campfires where we socialized, enjoyed s'mores and told stories of past hiking/travel adventures.

Pinnacles National Park is located in Central California's Monterey County. Pinnacles was established as a National Monument in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt. The status was changed to a National Park in 2012 and since then it has grown rapidly in popularity and visitation.

Pinnacles is undeniably beautiful and unique. Just be sure not to plan a visit for late spring or summer as it gets very hot! March and April are perfect months for this park though April can be crowded (but has the best wildflower displays) and March gets a little more precipitation. It is interesting to note that Pinnacles is in a rain shadow so gets less rainfall than surrounding areas. Those who can-celed due to fear of the weather missed a great outing at a perfect time.

Thank you co-leaders Gigi Harvey, Joe Harvey and Bob Cody. n

Winter Bus Trip to Mammoth

These photos are from the OCSS bus trip to Mammoth, co-sponsored by Wilderness Adventures, and show some of the ski fun we had. On the first day, we did a small tour in the Obsidian Dome area close to June Lakes. On this day we were fortunate to have some very experienced skiing instructors with us and our focus was on enhancing participants' back-country skiing skills. We also got close to some of the interesting volcanic geology the area. On the second day, we toured from the main lodge at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort to the Minaret Vista and then on up San Juan Ridge a ways. It was a beautiful blue-sky day and the views back towards Mammoth Mountain, west across the San Joaquin River valley to the Ritter Range, and east to the Owens River Valley were our reward for skiing up the ridge. Other people who came on the bus enjoyed the mountains by going on snow-shoe hikes or just skiing downhill at the Mammoth resort. n
