The White Cockade — Sept/Oct 2015 3

Frae the Cha irFrae the Cha irFrae the Cha irFrae the Cha ir

I hope that you have all had a wonderful summer, and are ready to get back to regular dance classes. Dancing in the Park enjoyed perfect weather, and if you managed to attend some of these evenings you won’t be too “rusty” when you show up at your first class. Other summer dancing opportunities included the massed dancers performance at the Highland Games, and the Canada Day parade. A good number of Branch members participated in both of these events, and for the parade our ranks were swelled with friends and relations of dancers, plus a couple of young Glaswegian lassies who were visiting Vancouver, saw our group in the staging area, and ended up carrying flags! Special thanks to Cathrine Conings for organising the RSCDS parade contingent, and to Francis O’Farrell for leading our group with his tartan-bedecked truck.

The White Cockade, as we know it, was in jeopardy this spring. Eleanor Pedersen has done a wonderful job as editor over a four year period, but with the publication of the May-August edition she took her well-deserved retirement. At that time, despite a full season of advertising for a new editor, no qualified volunteer had come forward. Under the circumstances, it looked as though we would be forced to rely solely on our website for dissemination of information to Branch members. Our website is certainly a very valuable resource, but for several reasons I and my fellow Board members strongly desired to continue with the traditional printed newsletter. Among the reasons were: we still have a significant number of members who do not have internet access, the printed White Cockade is an excellent archival document, and many members, including myself, find it very convenient to grab the current issue and flip through it to look something up. It appeared that the only way forward was to retain the services of a professional editor. That was easier said than done, but it was accomplished, and now I am very pleased to introduce our new editor Karen Sommer. Karen is the daughter of Branch member Robin Sommer, and she is an experienced editor. She will be producing both print and electronic versions of The White Cockade. Bringing Karen on board is one factor in the increase in this season’s membership dues ($2.00 for increased White Cockade production expenses, and $5.00 to cover increased fees to RSCDS Headquarters and the poor exchange rate for $CDN versus the GBP). I feel that the money paid to Karen will be well spent. Even with these increases, Scottish country dancing remains one of the most inexpensive recreational activities available.

A reminder: the Branch’s Annual General Meeting will take place at the Scottish Cultural Centre on September 18th, commencing at 7:30 PM. See full details on page 11.

I hope to see many of you at the West End Scottish Country Dance Club’s Fall Frolic on September 5th. The program is always fun, and it’s a great way to start the season.

Happy dancing, Gerry Stensgaard

Branch Branding

Vancouver Branch will be addressing the subject of its “visual identity.” The purpose is to have a graphic image specific to our Vancouver Branch so that all printed and electronic material will be consistent in appearance. A committee of Patsy Jameson, Cathrine Conings, Sandy Caruth, and Simon Scott will gather and review information for this “branding” process. Branch members are invited to forward any comments, ideas or images for the committee’s consideration. These should: ■ convey what we do — Dance Scottish ■ convey who we are — RSCDS in Vancouver ■ be simple ■ have action and attraction. We look forward to receiving any idea, image, or design you wish to contribute. Please forward your suggestions, by 30 September 2015 to: [email protected] or to [email protected]

In Memoriam: Ron Arrowsmith

Long-time Branch member Ron Arrowsmith passed away on July 20th, 2015.

Ron began Scottish country dancing when he registered for the Ottawa Branch’s beginner class in the fall of 1964. After completing two years of classes, he was accepted into the preliminary certificate class. Having gained his prelim. certificate, he was immediately assigned to teaching a beginners’ class and a children’s class in Ottawa. In 1971 he took and passed his full certificate exam under Miss Milligan. He continued teaching in Ottawa as his work schedule permitted, and also danced on the Ottawa dem team.

Ron moved to Vancouver in 1974 and danced briefly with our Branch’s dem team, but work commitments limited his dancing activities for several years. In 1977 he took over the Kerrisdale children’s class, and he also began teaching the West Point Grey group. In 1979 Ron formed the Kerrisdale Seniors’ class which he taught until declining health forced him to retire from teaching in 2013. Beyond his teaching accomplishments, Ron published two collections of dances: The Doune Collection, Volumes 1 and 2. A number of his dances are dedicated to class members and dancing friends. Many readers will have all danced at least one of his dances, “The Royal Deeside Railway,” which was published in Book 40.

In addition to teaching and writing dances, Ron served stints as Branch Teacher Coordinator and as local TAC representative. In recognition of Ron’s contributions to the Vancouver dancing scene he was presented with a Branch Award in 2006.

Ron will be missed.

Bobby Brown Music Apprentice Scholarship 2015

I am extremely honoured to be the first recipient of the Bobby Brown Memorial Scholarship. Bobby Brown and the Scottish Accent Band have been my inspiration to becoming a SCD musician. I have always admired their mastery of the Scottish idiom and Bobby’s style of arranging traditional tunes for dancers. I would like to thank the TAC committee for creating the Music Apprenticeship Program at Summer School. I have been on “cloud nine” since TAC director, Fiona Miller, told me that I would be coached by Bobby’s pianist, Kathy Fraser-Collins on a daily basis at Longwood University, Virginia July 24th–August 2nd. Kathy, TAC music director, devised the apprentice program which was extremely beneficial to me and will be a great template for future musicians. This experience surpassed all workshops that I have attended. The workshop stressed active participation which was tailor fit so I could focus on improving specific skills, which could be assessed daily. Details of the course outline are listed on TAC website under 2015 Bobby Brown Music Apprenticeship. I had the opportunity to play for every teacher and every dance level. It was extremely beneficial to work with highly skilled teachers who gave very clear and helpful directions. All teachers and dancers were very supportive and encouraging. The added bonus was being able to pick up tips on improving my dancing skills. I hope I will prove worthy of this award as I continue the quest of playing traditional Scottish music at a high standard for dancers. There is a shortage of trained SCD musicians in North America. Donations to the Bobby Brown Memorial Scholarship are encouraged to allow future musicians to apply and give dancers the opportunity to dance to live music. Ready and…..

What a fantastic massed dance display! What a great demonstration team performance! I think we, RSCDS Vancouver, put forth a huge effort and attracted a lot of admiration from the spectators. Our booth too was well managed all day long by Helen and Elspeth and our greeters were busy talking to guests at the gate. Thanks also to all behind the scenes who put in hours of preparation. We can be justly proud of our showing there!

The White Cockade — Sept/Oct 2015 17

Well, well, well, a hearty thank you for a healthy turnout for the Canada Day Parade! We had 24 dancing, 1 driving, and 8 carrying assorted banners and flags. All wore a Canada flag-like sash so we actually had a “uniform” that made us look more like a team! A bit of wind mitigated the heat so we were comfortable. Onlookers clapped along with our music and roared when Duncan ran from one side to another inciting each side to outdo the other in a loud cheer! He sure used that Canada flag to work the crowd! To all who came to participate, a huge vote of appreciation! See you again next July!
