August 2017 3

Y ou wonder sometimes whether the local heroes realise the lifelong impact

they make on all the snotty-nosed little kids who are looking up at their

faces as if they are seeing fireworks burst across a sky for the first time.

You wonder whether the local heroes understand the example they set

when they conquer the world and then come back to their local club as living proof

that anyone with a big enough heart and a large enough dream can make it all come

true from an identical starting point.

You wonder whether Peter Doohan had an inkling of how much a town like

Newcastle was buoyed when he knocked Boris Becker out of Wimbledon in 1987

and how he did it.

There was no grandstanding and no histrionics when Doohan just went out there and

did at the All England Club what Novocastrians do best, just having a bit of a crack

without much fuss and bother and seeing what comes of it.

Doohan did not blink when someone more accustomed to the bright lights tried to

monster him. He just did what he had always done from day one at District Park in

the Newcastle suburb of Broadmeadow, served-and-volleyed his way to victory with

the immovable demeanour and physical presence of a BHP smoke stack.

It was surprising and not surprising to the kids who had grown up watching Doohan,

who was eight years older than me, hitting balls on the synthetic grass courts of

Distro. It feels like yesterday.

Newcastle’s complex of 30-plus courts was full to overflowing every Saturday for

the arvo comp, and every Sunday for the district titles. There would be times when you simply could not get a court in what

memory now serves up as heady days for tennis.

On more recent visits home, Distro has resembled a ghost town – the front bank of courts used to be the jewel in the crown. I

still have dreams of playing there when the grandstand would be packed for the better local matches. The last time I saw

them, those courts were in ruin. And if they’re only inhabited now by ghosts, Doohan is among them after one of the more

humble and likeable souls in world tennis passed away on Saturday at the age of 56 from Motor Neurone disease.

I was one of those snotty-nosed little kids who used to watch Doohan – a professional tennis player – rushing the net with a

game that was forged on and ideally suited to Distro. They were more like glass than grass.

When he heavily sliced his serve and covered the net like a warm blanket, he appeared unbeatable. He certainly was in

Newcastle. You wondered how anyone, anywhere in the world on the

professional tour, could get the better of him. If you thought Wimbledon used

to be quick, you should have seen those artificial-grass front courts at Distro.

Thirty years ago, he beat Becker in four sets and put his hands to his head in

beautiful disbelief.

No chest thumping, No showmanship. Just the courage of having attacked

the most attacking player in the tournament.

Not all the snotty-nosed little kids back home could serve-volley as crisply as

he could, as much as we had tried.

It was difficult to rush the net when you could barely see over it, but

Doohan’s win struck a chord. You could go from Distro to Wimbledon. No

one had to play at Broadmeadow forever.

Newcastle itself is like that. Doohan was like that. He twice won the junior

boys’ title in Newcastle. To every other junior champ – look where that can

lead.

His passing has triggered an outpouring

of emotion in the tennis world. This

was a six-feet-four giant, and a gentle

one at that. Reputations don’t matter? In the long run, they do. I’m not sure if the main

court at District Park has a name but there’s a prime candidate for an honorary mention

now. The Peter Doohan court. That’d be suitably low-key and powerful. Serve-and-

volley may have died. Doohan has died. Has tennis in Newcastle died?

The memories of men like him deserve to be preserved on the stamping grounds where

they originally made their marks. Because one thing will never die: the existence of

snotty-nosed little kids needing someone to look up to.

Becker’s loss to Doohan 30 years ago was hardly the only shock defeat in his career.

But something about it always touched him: the sheer old-fashioned decency of the

conqueror with the clunky old Prince Pro racquet.

Becker wrote a perfectly understated tribute yesterday: “RIP mate! You were the better

player.” Acknowledgement to Will Swanton, edited by R Castle.

Australian Teams for

2017 ITF World Championships, Florida USA

August 2017

Natasha Kersten conducted a most enjoyable tournament over three days with brilliant sunshine. Singles on Friday was followed by Doubles and Mixed on Saturday and Sunday.

The women outnumbered the men!

S amantha Janine Reid was born on the 15th December, 1965. Her parents were Malcolm and June Reid. Big sister Kellie was 3 years old. Samantha grew up at 16 Ambleside Drive Castle Hill, one of the three houses that were on the former property of our Grandpa Jack Reid. Grandpa had owned 9 ½ acres at Castle Hill. Behind our house was our

Grandpa’s, and behind his house was Dad’s brothers’ homes. No fences - Reidville. Ambleside Drive was a dead-end street with a riding school at the end. Reid Avenue ran off Ambleside Drive. Yes, we ruled that plot….. Samantha attended the local primary school and then on to Baulkham Hills High. Our life was very much involved with our Castle Hill family and Mum’s family - the Stalkers - that lived at Mortdale and its surrounding suburbs. Mum and Dad both played golf and Mum played tennis. Families on both sides played golf and tennis and went to the beach – a pretty simple life. In 1981, Dad died suddenly of a brain tumour. He was only 51, the same age as Samantha. It was a very stressful time for Mum as she had only just lost her mother a year or so before and then her Dad died a month before Dad. Samantha was 15 and in Year 10 at school. She finished school that year and started work. When she was 21, she wanted to work at Ansett as a flight attendant. At the time, it was a very glamorous, exciting job for a young person. It was difficult to get a job there, but she was determined to get the job. One of the prerequisites was to have attained your HSC. Well, Samantha did not finish her HSC, but that was no problem. She just got mum on board to forge one of Samantha’s friend’s HSC. Mum was good at enabling Samantha, it’s harder to get away with those things these days. The years she spent working at Ansett were some of her best years. She made so many lovely friends who had fun, they were naughty at times and they all grew up together. Samantha worked for Ansett until the day the company went into receivership which was 11 September, 2001. Nine Eleven! Tennis. What a great part of her life this has been. Samantha had learnt to play tennis as a junior but had given it up for a few years in her later teens. Once settled and working at Ansett, Samantha took up tennis again and found the joy of being part of the tennis community in Sydney. Sam played at many clubs and was involved in their committees over the years. She played at Parramatta/Baulkham Hills, Mosman, White City, Cheltenham, Castle Hill and Pennant Hills. She also was active in Senior Tennis which took her to country tournaments. Tom Foord. Tom’s father Rod and Samantha met at White City in 1995, married in 1996 and Tom was born 23 March 1997. Samantha’s life had a new direction after Tom was born, however, Sam became a single mum when Tom was 18 months old. She changed careers so that she would have a more stable life. She moved into Administration and worked at St Vincent’s Hospital, Kincoppal, Sydney Girls’ High and the Hills Sports High. Samantha adored Tom and he went everywhere with her, to tennis, work and play. Many of us were a part of Tom’s life. Samantha became an expert at Football, Cricket, Lego, anything that Tom liked, Samantha would quickly learn about and become an expert (or so she truly believed). Financially, life was hard as a single mother, so when Mum was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Samantha took the opportunity to move in with Mum to help her, as well as to help herself financially. This was 2010 and Tom started high school at Kellyville. At the end of 2012 Tom moved to live with his father and extended family. The last 5 years of Samantha’s life have not been easy and yes, in hindsight she may have wished to have made different decisions in her life. However, she was Samantha and once she decided she was going to do something, it was very hard to talk her out of it. Thus, she lived the life she chose to live. The sadness is that sometimes it takes

these times of finality to make peace. The lesson is that we should resolve things when we can rather than hold on to them for many years. Life really is too short. Kellie Reid.

Notwithstanding the somewhat fractious relationship between Kellie and Sam over the years and more recently her numerous comments that she could actually “kill” Samantha, the way she was behaving, Kellie and Sam were family and that bond was evident. Kellie was there for her, trekking out to Westmead and then Auburn many times a week, sitting, talking, listening. Many tears were shed at home as she tried to stay strong and make some sense of it all. The last 6 months were horrible for Samantha - pain through a chronic infection, and then to be diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, she was given no alternative but to finalise her affairs. From December 3 to May 31 she was in and out of hospital with only a few weeks spent back at home, but there was more to Samantha’s life than this cancer. As we all know, she could be ferocious and a force to be reckoned with. That was because she had lived a life of experience. (By Kellie’s husband, David).

To Sam, from Catherine...

S ome members need a little moral support from members, as they are having health issues of late....

Kristan Renneberg was rushed to John Hunter Hospital with a temperature of 40 degrees...now that’s

really “hot stuff, Kris” – somebody commented that his brain was “boiling”! Luckily after many scans

and other tests, they found no evidence of anything sinister, just his medications playing up with his

system. Glad to hear you’re on the mend Kris! Myra was a very worried girl!

The trip to Florida for Norm Richardson is off, unfortunately. He went (voluntarily) for a few tests and to Norm’s

surprise, the doctor found many diseased arteries that require surgery. We wish Norm well for his operation in

September ... hope your fitness will mean a quick recovery, Norm! Margaret will no doubt look after you well

during that time!

John Morgan is getting close to returning to tennis after having a hip replacement operation - join the club, John -

it is an elite one! Even our President is a member!

Cheerio Corner

F lying was in many ways like going back to a strict private school, there were a lot of Rules and Regulations. Samantha and I met in our early years at Ansett in 1987. I was the type to totally toe the line, Sam was the complete opposite. She’d push the boundaries, I would cling to them. I was drawn to her immediately, she was everything I wasn’t. She was crazy, loud, fun....she was defiant, she excited me, she taught me to push boundaries,

to take risks, to not take life so seriously. She taught me how to drink and smoke, to throw caution to the wind. I admired her confidence, she didn’t need to impress anybody, I always loved that about her. One of my favourite stories from our flying days was a hot January day, we’d gone for a swim at the Football Stadium before work, we both forgot our stockings. She said “don’t worry, Nivea will do it, it will give us the same shine as stockings!” We turned up for sign-on that day and to our great shock were told we were being assessed that day - OMG – not only had we no stockings, neither of us had the required bar change that was always compulsory to carry. All I could see

was INSTANT FAIL... not for Sam, she went straight into action – she managed to acquire stockings for us both and borrowed bar purses from 2 much better-prepared hosties, all whilst arranging for the fellow checking us, to be making us a cup of tea!!! I could not believe her audacity, she already had him wrapped around her little finger. She could be so charming when she wanted to be! Out we went onto a hot tarmac, to our aircraft.. Samantha began to direct proceedings....not how a normal check flight would go. She confidently devised a plan. “Catherine, why don’t you show Robin all the emergency equipment and explain the pre-flight checks, while I get us all a cold drink before we pass out” .... Robin thought this was a great idea, (he was already putty in her hand), and asked for a diet coke, as Sam and I were both having. Quick as a flash, she returned with 3 drinks and passed them around as I recited our emergency procedures. I sipped mine - she had added Vodka to our drinks, not his, so we could not only survive our check flight, but ENJOY it! What a hilarious day it was.....we had 2 vodkas each, he had no idea, and we, especially Samantha, were so funny, charming and warm to all our passengers that day. We passed our assessment with flying colours, being told that we were both true assets to ANSETT. We have had a great friendship that has spanned thirty years. We were so different

– very Yin and Yang. She was all Yang – fiery and strong, I was more Yin – I grounded her, she helped me fly. In many ways our friendship was a coming together of opposites, and somehow it worked so well. She was a fierce.... (sometimes too fierce), loyal friend. At a particularly low point in my own life, she took me under her wing and encouraged me to play tennis. I was nowhere near her standard, that didn’t worry her, she arranged the right groups for me to play in – first at Mosman Lawn and later at White City. She was an absolute pillar of strength for me at that time, and I will forever owe her for all that tennis has brought to my life. Over the years, I had the opportunity to play more tennis than she did as she was working full time. I desperately wanted to close the gap between us and we occasionally got together to play this crosscourt game we devised – she could see the gap was closing, our last game together just after her Mum had passed away, I will never forget – she was up 2 games to 1. I was sure this was my chance.... but no....the heavens opened up and we were washed out! That gap never closed – she was happy about that. If there is any strength I can draw from being privileged to be near her in her final days... it is knowing I told her how much I loved her, how highly I valued our friendship and being able to say thanks for all our wonderful times together. Fly high beautiful Sam ..... save me a spot on the best court up there. Catherine

"Muswellbrook Magic"

T ennis Seniors NSW players were treated to a wonderful empathetic 20thAnniversary

Muswellbrook Seniors’ Tennis Tournament. Of course their signature 7am breakfast delight

started weekend proceedings, chef Ken Smith and toastmaster Garry Potter, at their best, with a

great support crew, providing a great catalyst for excellent tennis and great camaraderie from

the players in perfect sunny conditions, (except for Singles on “windy Friday”).

Saturday's dinner celebration was well attended and serviced at Eaton's Hotel - beautifully adorned dining

room with balloons, the iconic Pam King's wonderfully scripted and delivered

MC'ing yet again a highlight, (with people ducking for cover!) Notable is the

award for “best dressed” - it went to Mick Bruton who had RED tennis shoes,

which he teamed with a red striped shirt and dark shorts. (See the pic)

A delicious and delightful anniversary cake was provided by Doreen whose

management of the kitchen over the weekend, creating more magic delights was

second to none!

Signature pens were offered as a further memento, so I say this is a perfect

example of great administration with tremendous unconditional volunteer support,

all in the interests and welfare of the players. We were so humbled by such

consideration and respect. So to President Noel Fraser, Secretary Val Angel,

Treasurer Dianne Jaskiewicz, Happy 20th, thank you sincerely from all of us in

attendance for providing the Magic at Muswellbrook! A great honour to you!

PS Thanks to TSNSW President Mick Bruton for attending and a special thanks to

John Erwin Lange 1938 - 2017

J ohn Lange, born on May 21, 1938, sadly passed away on Sunday August 13, after a brief but serious

illness in Royal North Shore Hospital.

John had been a long time member of Tennis Seniors NSW, having held the position of Vice President

for several years. He was very supportive of the committee and was

involved in several social tennis groups each week. John also had a lengthy

involvement with Hunters Hill Tennis Club, where he played, mowed

lawns and administrated.

Judy Smith has provided the following info on John’s admin time etc at

HHTC:

Committee 1992, Vice President 1993, 1994 and 1995, Committee 1996

President 1997, 98, 99, 2000 and 2001.

During John’s time at the club he won the Open Singles and Doubles;

Special Singles and Doubles (like B Grade events); and another trophy

called the Meggitt Trophy. It is a pointscore trophy that goes to the person

who has been most successful in our Club Championships in that particular

year but didn’t actually win an event.

He played Badge for the Club for innumerable years.

John always had an extremely keen interest in the actual care and

maintenance of the lawn courts. Up until 2014 he was the backup when

our usual groundsman wasn’t available for the cutting and marking of the 5

courts.

John’s family were distributed around the country, (a daughter and sister in

Adelaide, sons in Melbourne and Sydney and a daughter in Merimbula). I

well remember travelling with John, Tuara and Arthur into South Australia

to places like Nuriootpa, Gnadenfrei and Tanunda, where we checked out

headstones in church yards for names of his (german) ancestors. St

Michael’s Gnadenfrei Lutheran Church is where we found the links to John’s family. It was an emotional

occasion to be there with John. By Robyn Castle

Tuara recounts: John flew to Aitutaki (Cook Islands) after my Dad had passed away and helped us to paint

the walls inside the family home. His help was invaluable, and John was very happy to share his handyman

skills. My brothers bought the paint, and John supplied the manpower – for whatever job he started, he

would always finish it to perfection. (This is what I really loved about John - his generosity and attention to

detail).

After the work was done John enjoyed going around the island on a motor bike and met a few locals who

were involved with making log furniture. John shared their interest and was impressed with their ability to

carve it beautifully into different wooden items. They carved a canoe from the trunk of a Mahogany tree. He

even managed to find a ukulele that was made from coconut shell and a piece of mahogany.

One time I remember, I was visiting my family in Whakatane. About the same time there was a Veterans’

tennis tournament at North Shore Tennis Club, (indoor courts) in Auckland – John rang me from Australia

and asked me to play with him. I agreed, and we played both there and at another veterans’ tournament at a

club in North Auckland. We enjoyed playing because we got to meet lots of other players from different

tennis clubs in Auckland. It was in a round robin format that enabled us to play against everyone, with the

winners playing the winners from the next section. Even though it rained, we managed to complete the event.

The tournament organisers commented that John had travelled from Sydney especially to participate in this

tournament.

John and I shared lots of time travelling to places in Australia – to play tennis sometimes, and also just

sightseeing. One lovely trip was to South Australia with Arthur and Robyn, where we played in the South

Australian State Championships. We won all the events we played in, and came home with the medals!

A group of gentlemen (about 6 of

them) who were ushered out of home

by their respective spouses, were seen

having a marvellous time on the

Forster weekend. We think the spouses

probably did too! (but were not in

Forster). Thursday night, Friday night,

Saturday night....Their favourite

pastime was drinking, and maybe they

needed a spouse to be the driver. (Bad

luck guys, you left them at home!) Not

too sure if they knew what they were

doing, but they slept in more than once

and struggled to get to tennis on time!

They were given free rein, so they

took up the offer! How nice!

Forster - August 4 - 7

F orster turned it on for over 300 players during the Bank Holiday weekend Aug 4-7. And what a weekend! Some players were sent to Taree, to play – an early start, as play is scheduled to start at 7.45. Then there were those who

played at Sporties or Twin Towns – a mere 5 minutes across the bridge, and of course, the Forster complex. Jaime McDonagh had entered several players from his coaching classes, mainly women, and some of them fared very well, others will do better next year! Multiple pools in every event made it a challenge for the court allocation team. However they managed pretty well. Bright sunshine and calm, cloudless skies were the order of the day, except on Sunday afternoon when the wind came up! That made the Mixed events VERY challenging. Another successful weekend at one of the most popular destinations in NSW.
