The new Lions year is now going into full swing. So many things are starting up. This is the perfect time to once again recruit new members. LCI is a great re-source for ideas on making this happen. Simply go on line and check it out. You also have a GMT to look to for ideas as well as the DG team. Building up new members in your club brings new ideas and energy. By adding new members to your club the scope of your service projects and fund raising can grow. All new members added will become Centennial Lions as part of our 100 year celebration. The new member and sponsor’s will get special recognition to mark this event.

The District Governor’s Team is working hard to help with new membership as well. We are ready and willing to work with your club. Many times we will approach people and ask them to join, the quick response is often “No Thanks”. They have reason to say no, sometimes it just because they don’t know enough about what we do. I was one of them. I was asked to join the lions many times before I did. Don’t give up on good candidates just be patient. Just give them a little time. A big reason people us for not joining is they feel they don’t have the time. I tell people give what you can. You don’t need every member to help at every event. Let them know this and explain we all do a number of events. Find one that interest you. This helps get them on board. Many times once they help at an event this gets them hooked on what we do. Adding members can be a challenge but don’t give up.

Proud To Serve With All Of you

Hello to my fellow Lions,

As 2nd VDG, one areas I am assigned to work on is leadership. In this newsletter, I am addressing clubs especially ones without a budget on how to preparing a club budget as a means of providing leadership.

It is recommend that Club BODs taking a proactive role to develop a 2015-2016 Budget that will also serve as the basis for their club’s activity for the year. If your club does not have a budget/plan, then the BOD should develop one by the middle of October at the latest.

The follow is an easy approach to developing a budget. Using your clubs charity checkbook from the past 2 years:

Make a list of all donations (who and amount) Make a list of all fundraising projects (list receipts - expenses = profits) Then put a date (month) to the items on these lists Review the lists to determine if additional items or changes are needed

This will result in a budget and the basis for your club’s 2015-2016 plans for the year. The Budget/Plan should then be shared with the whole club for their review and acceptance. Getting the club acceptance will also help commit them to working the projects. This is a good means to developing and growing the club’s leadership. I can tell you from my club’s experience that creating a budget / plan has help grow our club and better serve our community.

If there are any questions or you want help please or e-mail. Sam Longbook 2nd VDG District 44H E: [email protected] H: 603-329-5603

District Governor Scott has challenged every club in the district to increase membership by 20% this Lionistic year. In order to do this, each club must create a membership plan showing how many new members you expect to get each quarter. The plan should also show

the number members expected to be dropped. In addition to forecasting membership changes, you need to put together an action plan showing how the club plans to obtain the new members and how the club will replace these dropped members. Once new members have joined, how and when they be oriented to help the understand what Lionism is, how your club serves the community, where monies used come from and most importantly how they can help. If your looking for recruitment ideas , check out the LCI links below:

Two Important LCI Programs that Help Retain Members

Lion/Club Orientation

The importance of new member orientation cannot be emphasized enough. Imagine belonging to an organization and having only a vague idea of its goals, programs, history or traditions.

The information presented during orientation provides a foundation for new members. It helps them understand how the club functions, what their role will be and gives them the big picture of their district and the association. When new members are properly informed, they are more likely to feel comfortable with the club and become actively involved in Club activities right away. A properly oriented member

is also one who is most likely to remain in Lions for years.

The Lions Mentoring Program The objective of the Lions Mentoring Program is to help every member achieve the goal of better serving his or her community. It does so through a program of personal development that helps members realize the potential that their unique skills and knowledge offer. The Mentoring Program prepares them for leadership in clubs, in the association and in their personal lives as well. For Lions Clubs International, this means more hands and better service for the people who need it most.

Lions Sight and Hearing News

Has your club considered giving a Granite State Fellow award? This most prestigious award can be given to an individual, a deserving club member or a member of the community at large, or to an organization. If the recipient already is Granite State Fellow, the individual can be-come a progressive Granite State Fellow. The application forms are readily available at http://www.nhlions.org/. There are two forms there, for an individual and for an entity (Organization). The cost is only $500 and it helps Lions Sight and Hearing to build its endowment to fund future hearing aid and cataract surgery cases. For more information, contact PCC Roger LaTulippe, 566-9409,

Facebook is more than just getting the word out about you upcoming events or posting about what happened at those events. It’s also for

passing on information about Lions International and new breakthroughs in vision issues, Guide dogs, hearing programs and

other data. The idea is to like the page and then share it. When you share a district post it goes to all your friends. They find out what Lions in our district are doing as well as finding out about Lions in general. Some of us have the same friends and think that’s already

been shared so we don’t have to. I may not have all the same friends in New Hampshire that you do but I still share things on Facebook. By sharing I reach people all over the globe whom I have friended.

Check it out.

Last fall both Districts 44H and 44N were shown a mock‐up of a possible cross‐hatched Handicap access aisle sign proposed by Lion Ken Jones and PCC Charlie Vars of the Amherst Lions Club, which was unanimously endorsed at both Cabinet Mee ngs as a worthwhile Community Service project.

These signs have been designed to emphasize that the spaces next to a Hcp parking space are not to be parked in by anyone and that the State has now ins tuted RSA's and substan al monetary penal es for doing so.

The sign, shown at right,  has been endorsed by the MS Society and other disability groups, approved by the State of NH, produced at the State Prison and now available to your clubs at a cost of $15.00 each.  The project has also been approved by the legal department at Lions Clubs Interna onal.

While the moun ng holes will already be drilled, your Club will be responsible for moun ng them either on a building or on a metal post procured and erected by the Club.  You will also be responsible for obtaining permission from the business or land‐lord wherever they are to be installed.

Par cipa ng in this worthwhile endeavor will promote and provide visibility for NH Lions Clubs while also protec ng that access aisle for necessary wheelchair use.

Since the State prison system will ONLY sell to one en ty, the Amherst Lions Club has purchased 50 of these signs which can now be ordered by sending a check made out to the Amherst Lions Club for $15.00 each and sent to PCC Charlie Vars, at PO Box 788, Amherst NH 03031.  In order to save your Club any shipping costs, I will agree to personally deliver any signs ordered, to the upcoming Cabinet mee ngs in August.

Camp Pride Updates By the time you all read this the camp will be just about done for another year. We have a new group of High School students in for 4 days then we will be finished. Lots of visitors again this year. All of our partner groups commented on all of the positive changes we have made. Next comes the work party groups. The dates will be announced as soon as we can. We are looking for help with painting, metal roofs, putting the docks to bed as well as brush cutting and general clean up. If you have never been I encourage you to come up and give us a hand and see all of the incredible changes going on. We will always provide lunch for anyone who comes up. It is not too late to order a brick to honor a deceased member, former president or just to reward a hard working member of your club. Thank you for your continued support and interest, Al Goldstein

September is apple month in NH. There is nothing better than sinking your teeth into a nice crisp apple straight from the tree. Whether you have

diabetes, prediabetes, or no diabetes, there are many good reasons why an apple should be part of your daily diet. Apples are high in antioxidants and a fiber called pectin, that may play a role in disease prevention.

Here are 15 health benefits of eating apples: 1. Get whiter, healthier teeth 2. Avoid Alzheimer's 3. Protect against Parkinson's 4. Curb all sorts of cancers 5. Decrease your risk of diabetes 6. Reduce cholesterol 7. Get a healthier heart 8. Prevent gallstones 9. Beat diabetes and constipation 10. Neutralize irritable bowel syndrome 11. Avert hemorrhoids 12. Control your weight 13. Detoxify your liver 14. Boost your immune system 15. Prevent cataracts

HOLIDAYS FOOD DRIVE

Last year at the last minute I challenged all of the clubs to do a food drive in November to help support the Holidays. While it was a little last

minute, many clubs stepped up and got it done. I am once again challenging all of you to do it again.

There are many people in the state that are challenged every day to

provide themselves or their families for a nutritious meal. Anything we can do is a plus. Whether it is a true food drive or holiday baskets or

donations to your local food pantries, let’s see what we can do to make it a little better for our neighbors.

Let’s all share our successes in future newsletter!

Proud To serve With All Of You

The Lions Clubs International Centennial Celebration kicked off in July 2014 and ends in June 2018. Your club has the opportunity to earn a banner patch each year by serving those in four major categories. They are: engaging our youth, sharing the

vision, relieving the hunger and protecting our environment. Sound fa-miliar? They should, as they are four of the categories of giving for the Lions Clubs International Foundation. Your club is already doing service projects in these areas, so all that is required is reporting to MyLCI. Don’t forget to add pictures! They could show up on Facebook, twitter or in the Lion magazine. Another way to participate is with inviting new members. Centennial membership awards are available. Be the first in your club to receive the Centennial Sponsor pin! Here’s a great recruiting tool – every new Lion benefits 23 people! 23 people! Let your prospective members know that and see how quickly they join. Take time to assess your community needs and plan a Centennial project that leaves a lasting impression. HUDSON LIONS CLUB AT OLD HOME DAYS

The Hudson Lions Club parked cars, conducted a raffle table and sold deeds for their annual Cow Pie Bingo at Hudson Old Home Days held August 13-16. In spite of a slight shower it did not put a damper on the Hudson Lions to fulfill their mission: to raise awareness of their club and the services they provide for the community and to seek funds to continue serving.

For many years the Moultonborough Lions Club has hosted an August dinner for residents of Mountain View and Golden View Nursing Homes. This year they added residents of For-est View to the list. Thus, a new tradition has begun.

Lion members love this event because they get a chance to “Serve” and that’s their motto “We Serve.”

As the buses arrived, guests were greeted by the Lions and ushered to their seats. They were then offered a choice of drink along with some scrumptious appetizers. When dinner was ready, Lion members took orders from the guests and served them. The choice was hamburger, hot dog, potato sal-ad, pasta salad and sliced farm fresh tomatoes. Of course no dinner is complete without dessert so when all were finished, ice cream sandwiches were passed out.

President Jeni Williams then opened the meeting by welcom-ing each group and thanking them for coming out for the night. She then thanked all the people working behind the scenes to make the dinner such a success.

After a patriotic song was sung, President Jeni told a short story – with a moral – which put a smile on everyone’s face and set the mood for the rest of the night. She then introduced the entertainment for the night “Johnny’s Animal HiJinks.” A thirty minute tape of Johnny Carson’s most unforgettable moments when being introduced to wild and exotic animals by Joan Embery of the San Diego Zoo and Jim Fowler of Wild Kingdom.

Everyone present laughed out loud as they watched this tape. Johnny Carson truly was the King of Late Night TV. His facial expressions were hilarious!

The Moultonborough Lions Club July Dinner Meeting is always “special” because it honors the Club’s scholarship recipients and their families as well as recipients of the Annie Forts “UP” Syndrome Fund scholarships. (The Moultonborough Lions Club established the “UP” Fund in 1997 in honor of Lion Ann Forts). Sadly the recipients of the “UP’ Fund scholarships had other commitments and could not attend the dinner this year. They were truly missed and the Lions wish them well.

Because of their motto “We Serve”, the Moultonborough Li-ons Scholarship Committee places much emphasis on communi-ty service during their deliberation process. This year 10 de-serving applicants were awarded $11,000. When choosing the winners, the committee has no idea of the name of the stu-dent.

Elaine Veile, from Moultonborough Academy was awarded $2,000 and $1,000 went to Veronica Diltz, Kelsey Coppinger, Zachary Atwell, Chelsea Stockdale also from the Academy along with Kalee Tinker, Peter Baker, Sarah Dunlap and Logan Goewey from Inter-Lakes and Sage Lincoln from Kingswood.

When the students received their scholarships in June, in-cluded in the packet was an invitation for their parents and themselves to attend the July Scholarship Awards Dinner. Four of the recipients could not attend due to other commit-ments. Those who did attend enjoyed a delicious dinner cooked by Donna Grow and friends.

After dinner President Jeni Williams introduced each student and gave them the opportunity to say a few words and let club members know what their goals were for the future. Every-one in attendance could “feel” the Lions Pride.

In order to encourage students applying to two year schools, the Moultonborough Lions voted a few years ago to split their awards 60/40. Unfortunately, this year no students seeking to attend a two year school applied.
