Do not simply drop off your kids and rely on other adults to do all the work. PAST VOLUNTEERS: To those adults who volunteered in the past, we are grateful for your past service. BUT, the kids today need you just as much as the kids of yesterday, probably even more so. We welcome adults who are more mature in their faith to serve as Christian role models for our children. NEW MEMBERS: Volunteering for the children and youth programs is a wonderful way to connect and build relationships. Personally speaking, I have also discovered I have a much closer relationship with God now that I am consistently serving Him through our church. There are many ways to serve Sunday mornings: nursery, SHINE Time, Sunday school (teachers and assistants). We also need greeters and hall monitors for the education building to welcome kids and their families to our church. Just five hours of your time each year would make a huge difference to our ministry. That’s less than an hour, every other month! If you could volunteer more hours, great, but if not, just know we appreciate each hour, and each hour is valuable to us. In closing, I encourage you to read John 13:12-17 and contemplate Jesus’ command to serve one another. We should all be thankful that God has given us the opportunity to serve HIM by serving the children and youth who attend our church. My husband and I joined Belin Memorial UMC because of the many children and youth programs it offers. I am so grateful my kids feel “at home” when they are at Belin. That is due to the loving SHINE Time leaders, Sunday school teachers, and volunteers. Even members who don’t have children or whose children are now adults should recognize it is good for children and youth to be involved with church.

A few years ago, I remember coming to worship one Sunday and being informed that some of children’s programming would not be offered for a few weeks because there were not enough volunteers to help out. We do not want that to happen again, but unless more members of our congregation come forward to help, we will not be able to continue all the programs we currently offer on Sunday mornings.

In hopes of solving the “lack of volunteers problem” before our church is forced to cut back on its educational programming, we are reaching out this summer to individuals in three specific groups:

PARENTS: Kids learn what is important in life from you – by volunteering your time, your kids will learn that supporting our church is important to you. Do not simply drop off your kids and rely on other adults to do all the work.

PAST VOLUNTEERS: To those adults who volunteered in the past, we are grateful for your past service. BUT, the kids today need you just as much as the kids of yesterday, probably even more so. We welcome

adults who are more mature in their faith to serve as Christian role models for our children.

To sign up to help us, you can either email Jane Sparks at [email protected] or call the church office at (843) 651-5099. You can also email me at [email protected] or call at (843) 222-8647.

Faithful, Abundant, and True - New Women’s Study

FAITHFUL, ABUNDANT, AND TRUE: Three Lives Going Deeper Still!

A new woman’s study is starting on Tuesday, July 7, at 6:30 PM in the Family Life Center. Ladies, plan to join us for this six-week study led by three powerful women. Kay Arthur teaches on the book of Hebrews as both an example of God’s faithfulness and a challenge

to believers to be faithful in difficult times. Priscilla Shirer teaches from Ephesians 3:20-21 on God’s abundance. Beth Moore teaches on the topic of discernment. While these three women each speak on the distinctive topic the Holy Spirit lead them to teach, the messages result in a marvelous blend.

Blessed by Africa University Choir

The Worship Arts department extends its thanks to all those who gave generously of themselves as we welcomed the Africa University Choir on June 14. From host families to cooks and servers to those who donated goodie bag items and all who gave to the love offering, our young guests were overwhelmed and felt so blessed. And, if you were fortunate enough to be at one of our traditional worship services, you, too, were certainly blessed. Thank you, Belin Memorial!

“Amazing Grace,” performed by the Africa University Choir is now available here: www.youtube.com/austinebond. CDs are available to order in the church office by calling 843.651.5099.

International Missions Update . . . Fourth of July Parking

Thank you, Belin Memorial, for your wonderful support through all of the International Missions Team fundraisers and for your continued prayers. Thank you, as well, to all who helped assemble pillow case dresses! The recent yard sale was a great success.

The Mission Team will gather for dinner and communion on July 11 and will depart on July 12 for Guatemala. We are excited and blessed to be an extension of the Body of Christ to help two families with housing and to help the community kids with Bible school.

Prayers for our Guatemala Mission Team members: Merideth Bennett, Richard Bennett, Pat Byerly, Sue Byron, Barbara Charles, Catherine Corcoran (granddaughter of Cary and Marilyn Smith), Sara Corcoran (daughter of the Smiths), George Fain, Jan Finnical, John Finnical, Kathy Fox, David Goettel, Dave Hobson, Michelle Juback, Bill Keesee, Jason Killam, Cain Lee, Willie Lee, William Lee, Jr., Caroline Morris, Catherine Morris, Jean Morris, Judy Price

Fourth of July Parking The International Missions Team will be parking vehicles on the 4th of July in the grass field adjacent to the church office for the parade and fireworks. The parking is free; however, donations are greatly appreciated to help with our upcoming trip! Bottled water will be for sale throughout the day.

This is the 21st year for this event, and it has become the signature fundraising function for the Belin Endowment Fund. This is a fun yet competitive tournament that features plenty of great food such as Chick-fil-A biscuits and Krispy Kreme donuts to get you started and a seafood and pork barbeque lunch to wrap up the day. A Word About the Endowment Fund

Are You Aware? - a message from your Stewardship Team

The purpose of the Belin Endowment Fund is to provide members and friends opportunities to make charitable gifts to Belin Memorial that will be a permanent endowment of financial support. These gifts, and the income derived from them, are devoted exclusively for the benefit of the church. The Endowment Fund is intended for purposes that are not part of our established programs funded in the regular

operating budget supported by members’ contributions. The Endowment Fund is designed to seek, receive, and manage gifts, bequests, devises, or other contributions to insure the long term existence of the church’s physical assets.

The business of the Endowment Fund is managed by the Endowment Trust Team which is made up of twelve duly elected members who serve a staggered term of four years. Gifts made to the Endowment Fund serve as a living memorial and continue into perpetuity. Part of the sense of satisfaction that comes from making a planned gift lies in the knowledge that we can make a lasting impact and leave a legacy for generations to come.

Profiles of Service - by Carrie Humphreys (sixth in a series of interviews with the staff at Belin Memorial)

As the Director of Youth Ministries, Austin Bond’s easy walk to the church from the parsonage is an advantage. He's a busy guy, heading up dozens of youth programs for our sixth through twelfth graders. "I've been blown away at how many kids support our youth programs," Bond confides. "So many churches struggle to get participation."

Not Belin.

Anywhere from 60 to 130 youth gather each Sunday evening in the Family Life Center during the school year for dinner, games, and a lesson, later breaking into smaller groups by grade. The Youth Praise Band led by Bond provides the music. Youth workers (parents and volunteers) provide the simple suppers. Bond says they could use more youth workers, not just to prepare meals, but as chaperones and drivers. There is no Belin church bus.

Besides the Sunday night worship, Bond's youth unite locally each Tuesday morning before school for breakfast and devotion. "Pretty amazing to see sixty teens in a circle praying at Chick-fil-A at 7 AM. Then we take them to school."

Bond offers additional activities for his contingent, including Middle and High School Sunday school, older youth Confirmations classes, ski trips, mud football, whitewater rafting, Bible studies, even an annual baptism in the inlet for those teens (or adults) desiring it. Blessing of the Inlet t-shirt and fish fry sales help support the programs.

Prayer requests from some of his flock suggest Bond's mentoring is making a difference in our youth's spiritual journeys. "They are trying so hard to follow God in a world which is not following God. They ask God to show them how to live according to his plan."

Bond particularly recommends two profound and life changing youth retreats to students. One is called Chrysalis, a three day Christian retreat in Cherry Grove, plus the annual Belin mission trips. "The Salkehatchie and Middle School Mission trips are very powerful, and they make a huge impact on our young people."

Many believe the time of being set apart from their normal routines is a key to the success of the retreat because it allows them the freedom to focus on their relationship with Christ.

Bond, raised in Conway, recalls how his life was changed after attending a Chrysalis retreat when he was a Junior in high school. Later, at Clemson University, he studied microbiology, planning to become a doctor. "Then one day I knew it was the wrong plan for me. I felt the call to become involved in youth ministry."

Bond sandwiches his work responsibilities with family, wife Katharine and children Sierra, 11; Caroline, 9; and Dakota, 5. He's also a talented musician and photographer.

Can You Step In? We are always in need of volunteers in our nursery and SHINE Time programs as well as acolytes and crucifers. Contact Blair Delappe to step in, 843.357.5175
