Duke Talent Identification Program

Pastor Brian’s Chapel Challenge

The Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) 4th/5th Grade Talent Search provides academically talented students in the 4th or 5th grade additional scholastic opportunities. Eligibility for enrollment is an honor and indicates outstanding intellectual ability. To be eligible, students must score 125 or higher on a IQ test such as Inview (given in 3rd grade at Woodlands Christian) or score in the 95th percentile or higher on the previous year’s Stanford Achievement Test or Terra Nova in language, reading comprehension, reading (total), reading vocabulary, math problem solving, math procedures, and/or math (total). In other words, Duke TIP identifies students who perform in the top 5% of the NATION on an achievement test! Once students are enrolled in the Duke TIP, they receive access to enrichment materials and further opportunities for academically advanced students. This year 83% of our fourth graders and 74% of our fifth graders scored in the

TOP 5% of the NATION on a standardized test! Way to go! Thank your teachers for preparing our students so well! The following 4th and 5th grade students qualify for the Duke TIP:

4th Grade: Jacob Allen, Cooper Bennett, Preston Culberson, Andrew Forbes, Haley Goodney, Kate Kenisky, Josh Mueck, Reese Ray, Ben Smith, Eli Thompson, Emily Traweek, Tyler VanHorn, Chloe VanTil and Cash Walker. (see photo below left)

5th Grade: Cannon Brand, Nicolas Bryngelson, Caleb Chappelle, Jordan Enriquez, Colten Glover, Micalah Goodwin, Monet Guilbeau, Braden Harvey, Lauren Leppert, Hannah Mirbahaeddin, Grant Perry, Joshua Sweeney, Cesar Vargas, Carla Williams and Luke Yanochik. (see photo below right)

This week in chapel we continued our study of the names of God. We talked about the name El Olam today which means Everlasting God. We discussed how we live in a world where things change all the time: hair styles, how we dress, etc., but God does not change. El Olam, the Everlasting God, is the God of the past, the present and the future. He is not a new God on the scene (like many religions that pop up all the time). He is not a has been God (like many religions that die out). He is not a God that will be replaced one day, but rather, in the very end He will set up His kingdom here on earth (He has the future in His hands). Chapel Challenge: Discuss together as a family why you are grateful that God is the God of the past, present and future. In Christ,

Pastor Bryan

Spirit Week!

High school students (and faculty!) got into the homecoming spirit with themed dress days this week as follows: Tuesday-America Day; Wednesday-Neon Day; Thursday-Camo Day. All students in lower, middle and high school will show their Warrior homecoming spirit by dressing in green and gold on Friday.

Fall Band Concert

The sound of music filled the air on Wednesday evening as the middle and high school bands, under the direction of Mr. Charlton Hughes, presented their fall concert. Selections ranged from Tchaikovsky to Glenn Miller and John Coltrane. It was a wonderful evening of inspired performances by both bands.

Go Warrior Football!

Warrior Cross Country Update -- by Coach Tom Earle

On the very wet, sloppy Saturday, our Warrior runners pushed themselves and did very, very well at the Houston Christian Cross Country meet. This was at the end of the toughest, longest week of workouts for the year as the high school group put in close to 40 miles last week! For the high schoolers, the girls’ team amazed us all by finishing in third place out of 41 teams - many were much larger schools! This is their third team trophy this year. What a team! Riley Farra and Hailey Hanigan medalled by finishing in 18th and 22nd place, respectively. The remainder of our girls team pushed for points and each point counted! There were 88 total runners, and all of the girls’ times were very close to their best -- even with

the tough conditions and the hard workouts this week. The high school guys finished overall in 17th place in a very competitive group of

runners. There were 134 total runners, and our guys likewise set times that were very close to the season best even with the tough conditions. For the middle school group, this was the longest race of the

year with the two mile course. Hannah Shearer medalled by finishing in second place out of 78 runners and Madelyn Rasberry won a 5th place medal out of 58 runners. For the middle school boys, everyone ran very well, and we are setting ourselves up for the NHAL District race on October 23.

Warrior Girls’ Basketball Sign-ups

All middle school and high school girls who are interested in playing basketball should sign up on the clip-board in the girls’ locker room in the SLC or see Coach Stacie Phillips in The Armory. Try-outs for high school girls will be Monday, October 15 from 3:30-5:30 p.m., and Wednesday, October 17 from 3:45-5:45 p.m.

Try-outs for middle school girls will be Wednesday, October 17 and Friday, October 19 during 8th period.
