The Connection

A CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN BUSINESS WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION

We are deep into Fall now, although in South Florida there are no leaves on the ground, unless you count the palm tree fronds that fell in the wind. It is a time of Thanksgiving, a time of pa-rades, and football games; of homecomings and of enjoy-ing food and time with our families. As for our busi-nesses, it's a time of last min-ute preparat ions, keep-ing ourselves and our busi-nesses protected against the effects of the flu season, and of planning holiday parties, and getting ready to make our last stand so we can end our business year in the black. Our last chance to be productive and have a good year end, even when we face economic times that make our efforts appear to never be enough.

We must never give up our hope though. Consider the c o u r a g e t h e p i l g r i m s had...coming over to a new land, setting up their settle-m e n t s , a n d t h e i r b u s i -nesses. If they could do it and be successful with so little, then certainly we, with so much abundance, can aim that much higher!

This month, on November 5, 2009 along with our turkey dinner we will feature our own, ABWA Top Ten, Kathy Gallagher from Key Techni-cal Resources, Inc. speaking on "Put Your Best Foot For-ward: Interviewing Tips and Tricks" and we will be hear-ing from our meeting spon-sor Wendy King of Juice Plus.

Kathy will help us in our role as interv iew er or inter-

viewee, and Wendy will keep us healthy so we can do both roles ever easy.

November also gives us a great opportunity to show-case our business or to just enjoy and shop as we hold our Ladies Night Out Event on November 10th at the Carolina Club. Our fashion show will feature Talbots from the Promenade at Co-conut Creek.

Each year one of our members is honored as CHAPTER WOMAN OF THE YEAR. This honor will be conferred at our March meeting.

If you've applied in the past, do it again. If you've never applied and fulfill the criteria, please detail the highlights of your life and career, and become a part of this great program.

Criteria:Criteria:Criteria:Criteria:

♦ Be a female.

♦ Be a current or past chapter officer or committee chairperson.

♦ Be a chapter member for at least one year (as of December 1, 2009).

♦ Have made a major contribution in time or effort to the chapter.

It is suggested to have two applications – carry one around with you and when you think of things to include, jot down notes in the proper category. Then, when you put it all to-gether, it will be easy. Update them from year to year and keep it current.

Presentation does affect the judges, although points are not given for it. Traditionally, our judges have been non-ABWA professionals from our surrounding business community.

Applications will be available beginning at our November chapter meeting, or contact Randee Abramson directly at (954)288-5726 (or via email at [email protected]). The deadline for completing the application is January 31, 2010.

The search is on. . .

sidekick for the rest of the week-end.

Saturday: In Track C sessions: “Social Media Explosion” & “The Perform-ance Optimizer” I grew closer to the darling Nan Gaisbauer from Califor-Califor-Califor-Califor-nianianiania, who giggled with me like we were back in grammar school, be-came more intrigued by the fasci-nating Laura Barron from Tennes-Tennes-Tennes-Tennes-see see see see who shared with me the won-ders of Virtual Assistants, and was inspired by the effervescent Mar-quesa Petteway from New YorkNew YorkNew YorkNew York, who is continuing to coach me in a 28-day marketing program called Get Clients Now!

While our hearts live and work with our own Coral Springs chapter & Tri-County Council, it is important to keep in mind that we are members o f t h e A M E R I C A N B u s i n e s s Women’s Association, which means we have ABWA Sisters across the nation on whom we can rely, from whom we can learn, and w i t h w h o m w e c a n flourish now & forever!

NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Sixty years and still going strong! This year’s National Woman’s Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Missouri was filled with reflections of how this association has grown and evolved since 1949, as well as with excitement and promise for the next 60 years. Attending from our chapter were: Juli Evans, Lynn Fedoriw, Kathy Gallagher, Kandyce Key, Lois Margolin, Paula Pirozzi, and Nancy Wolfe. Be sure to check out the latest Women in Business magazine and see recaps and pictures of the exciting weekend.

Nancy Wolfe brought her wonderful cookies made especially for the 60th anniversary of ABWA, and presented them to ABWA’s CEO Carolyn Elman, the Executive Director Rene’ Street, and the 2009-2010 National Board. Pic-tured are: National President Casey Coven, National Vice President Pam Car-vell, National Secretary-Treasurer Lynn Drowne, followed by the District Vice Presidents: Anne Pasquini (D1), Tina Gandy (D2), Jan Stewart (D3), Bar-bara Pedersen (D4), Tracy Sweet (D5), & Debbie Shadaram (D6).

Friday night was the Awards Ceremony and this year 49 chapters got to walk across

the stage and receive their Best Practices awards. Twenty chapters/networks made the Level III Best Practices, ten made Level II, and 19 were awarded Level I Best Practices, the highest honor. Our District 1 had 7 chapters make Level I, the most in any district. Here we are receiving our Level I award from National President Vicki Marlett (left) and District I VP Lynn Drowne (right). Don’t we look smashing in our red gowns?

The Surprises that Come with ABWA

had already been speaking face-to-face with the Executive Director! She spoke with us about the revolu-tionary Women’s Instructional Net-work that created opportunities for ABWA sisters to communicate, learn, and facilitate with each other across borders like no other organi-zation could! Even before the Con-ference started, I knew that this weekend really was all about Team-ing Together for a Common Goal.

Friday: I selected Track C: Dare to Discover from the other great op-tions (A: ABWA KU MBA Essentials, B: Dare to Reach, & D: Dare to Evolve), so in addition to the fabu-lous all-conference events I at-tended 2 breakout sessions: “Profits Aren’t Everything, They are the Only Thing” & “The Practice in Real Life: What Every Business Person Needs to Know about Litigation.” Honestly, the presenter of the “Profits” session was not the best, but to every grey cloud there is a silver lining, because at this session, I met the lovely Rebecca Boles from TexasTexasTexasTexas, who would come to be my

Wednesday: I flew into Kansas City early Wednesday afternoon, and had no sooner stepped into the h ote l lobby w h en my ph one buzzed with a text message, “Are you here yet?” from Pat Johnson from MississippiMississippiMississippiMississippi. Within 10 minutes we were hugging, laughing, and catching up. Pat’s warm welcome coupled with the distinct sound of “Quack! Quack! Quack!” through-out the weekend made for a de-lightful reunion with the lovely la-dies I had met at the Ft. Lauderdale District I Conference in April 2009.

Thursday: I entered the lobby on Thursday morning, and introduced myself to a group of marvelous la-dies who were sitting & chatting: Marty Kauffman, Pam Martin, Liz Ishimitsu, among others were from OhioOhioOhioOhio & HawaiiHawaiiHawaiiHawaii chapters. This was followed by the first Pre-Conference Session “WIN in ABWA!” lead by Rene Street, Executive Director of ABWA, from MissouriMissouriMissouriMissouri. Imagine! Within the first hour of my 2nd day, I
