HAMILTON EISTEDDFOD All students in Mr Smith’s class (except Cahal McNaughton, Jordan Cross, Sam Riddle and Matt Fry) plus Jemma White, Miranda McIntyre, Vincent Huf and Jessica Field from Mrs Higgins’ class are involved in the Hamilton Eisteddfod on Tuesday 5 June. The 24 students involved will need to be at the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre (PAC) by 9.15am.

Mr Gleeson and Mr Smith will bus the majority of the students into Hamilton but parents are welcome to bring their own children to the PAC for the day’s competition. Mrs Macgugan would appreciate some help to unpack and set instruments up in the PAC at about 8.45am if you are travelling in by private car. We have the two large marimbas to move up the side steps into the supper room without losing any ‘bits’! Thank you to Mrs Helen Hanson for offering to transport the large marimba, we hope it fits into her crew cab!

The large recorder group, two smaller groups, the Consort of four players and the multi-instrumental group will all play before lunch. Students not involved in the afternoon program will return to school in the bus. The following students will be required after lunch from 1.30pm onwards (we will all eat lunch together, students can bring their own lunch or money to purchase at Macca’s. Mrs Mac shouts an ice cream!):

Lachie Field, Ryan Burgess, Abby Hayes, Airlie McIntyre, Casey White, Taylah Fenwick, Aleisha McDonald, Josh Mawson, Gemma Hill, Ben Cullinane, Jemma White, Amy Boland, Anna Kelly and Sophie Schurmann. The students involved in the afternoon program will need to be collected by their parents from the PAC at the completion of the program. Approximate times and a program will be sent home as soon as they are available.

Could parents please ensure students have ALL their music and instruments.

FULL winter school uniform is required. Only black

leather shoes or black leather boots, long navy pants for boys and tartan pants or skirts for girls, navy/black socks for boys and girls, navy hair ribbons or headbands, School rugby jumpers (perhaps borrow if you don’t have one). A small admittance charge is required at the PAC. Please encourage your children to practise in the next two weeks and if you could arrange a couple of practices with the partners in duets, trios etc that would be appreciated. The children are sounding great, and would love you and your family to be an audience next Wednesday 23

May in the school hall for

Education Week. This will help the students to familiarize themselves for playing in front of an audience especially the discipline for an adjudicator and calming nerves for playing a solo or duet/trio etc. Heather Macgugan

GRADE 3/4 SHEEP DAIRY EXCURSION On Monday we went to the sheep dairy. I had a great time. We got to taste four types of yoghurt. There were natural, lemon, vanilla and coconut. My favourite was coconut and vanilla. All of the yoghurts had a very strong taste. When they milk the sheep they can only milk eighteen sheep at a time. The person who showed us around was called Mrs Cuming. She was very nice and sweet. To make the milk go thick they had to add some cultures to it. The milk was in little cups. They would then put it into a warming room for ten hours. The workers then put a label on it and there you have it; a cup of yoghurt. By Jemma White

ANZAC DAY 2012

On Tuesday 24 April we held the Dunkeld School ANZAC Day Service in the afternoon. Mr Kent came to speak to us. We all did a few items. There were two poems called ‘Remember Him’ and ‘A is for the Australians’. The Preps sang ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’ and then we all sang the ‘Song

of Peace. By Gemma Hill, Year 5/6 On Tuesday 25 April, lots of Dunkeld residents came and respected the soldiers who died in all wars over the last 150 years. There over thirty students and the weather conditions didn’t help even though the number of people attending was phenomenal. Mr Terry Noble and Mr Peter Hinchey told stories about the war and the Victoria Cross recipient from Heywood in our district. Lots of people laid a wreath and the Lions Club gave us a sausage sizzle. From the Kitchen

Garden …

During this month of May we have learnt many techniques and terminologies in the kitchen.

Congratulations to all the Year 6 students who all have the long awaited “Knife Licence” and are chopping and

slicing like professionals, remembering to have hands in the ‘bear paw’ position to keep our fingers out of the way. Parsley is finely chopped to garnish soup, spinach and herbs chopped for our muffins and larger items such as marrow and pumpkin have also allowed for good knife skills in action. A very mature approach and responsible behaviour has been shown when we use the kitchen equipment by all students, well done. All of the Year 5 students, if displaying good listening and safety will have their knife licence before the end of term. The following meals have been prepared and shared over the last 3 weeks with the Year 6 students having a special class on Tuesday to prepare lunch for special guests of the school. Thank you to Sandy Roache and Terrie Nicholson for helping me in the kitchen on this day. Terms such as Rosti, Cannelloni, Granita, Acidulated water, adaptation of a recipe and many more recipe and kitchen terms have been talked about and origins of words sort from many sources such as the internet, the dictionary, or the glossary of recipe books. Our “Kitchen Detectives” work very hard to find out information for us. Our Menu for May has included the following: Potato and Zucchini Rosti Roast Pumpkin Cannelloni and Freshly Made Pasta Sheets Watermelon Fruit Punch with Fresh Mint Watermelon Granita Roast Pumpkin Soup Spinach and Herb Muffins Sweet Pastry Apple Pies Freshly Made Fettuccine Garden Tomato and Basil Sauce Parsley and Garlic Butter Pizza

Please ask your child what they made and tasted, what they liked or didn’t and what ingredients and techniques they remember.

Call in to the kitchen on a Friday from 9.15am and see the kitchen and the children in action. Year 5 and 6 students from 9.15am – 11.00am and the Year 3 and 4 students from 11.30am – 1.00pm. Clare Kennedy, Kitchen Specialist Last week we had three Year 12 students and Mr Mark Howard (their teacher) visit us in the garden. They are completing their Agriculture/Horticulture course and wanted to see how our SAKG program ran. They worked with the Grade 3/4's and did a great job - constructing a compost bin, putting in posts for our roo scarer fence, and carting soil for our wheat paddock. We'd welcome them back again anytime!!

6

We have had many veggie seeds self seed in our garden, so rather than waste them, we have been transplanting them into pots, to either use for ourselves, sell at fundraising stalls or give to our "Friends" as a way of thanking them for their help. We've planted lettuce, calendulas, coriander and a bay tree (we put it in a pot as they can grow very large!)

We started another worm farm - thanks to the White Family for giving us some worms to live in it. We have got a terrific harvest of pumpkins, and some of these ended up on the produce table, on national TV last Sunday morning. We hope to sow our paddock of wheat this week - thank you to Don Robertson who kindly donated the seed. We hope you all had a lovely Mothers' Day last Sunday. Lisa McIntyre, Garden Specialist Dear Mr and Mrs Crawford (Bill and Jenny) Thank you for the apples that you gave us. We have made lots of yummy things to eat. We made oat and apple scones and sweet short pastry apples pies in our kitchen class with Clare. We appreciated you giving us your lovely apples.

From Vincent Huf on behalf of the Year 3 and 4 Class, Dunkeld Consolidated School

FROM THE LIONS DEN Well we have had the German Night and it could only be described as a great success. Approximately 160 people came and enjoyed great German food, history and a talk by German national Christian Paul. They also enjoyed the Tabor Men’s Choir and as one visitor said ‘we had our money’s worth by the end of the first verse of the first song.’ To everyone that helped us to put on this event the Lions thank you because we cannot do it without your help. This was the ninth year that we have had a night such as this and some of the helpers have helped us each year. Again, thank you. The old Lion meets his match-again The old Lion was in the middle of a very important meeting when he received a phone call from his wife She said, “Dear, I’ve got some good news and some bad news.” The old Lion said, “Loved one, I am in the middle of a very important meeting, please just give me the good news. ”Well”, replied his wife, ‘the airbag on our new car works perfectly.” Peter Hinchey

DUNKELD RSL SUB-BRANCH Traditions and Symbols - The Dawn Service The Last Post: The Last Post historically has been used to signify the end of the day. A Period of Silence: Silence for one or two minutes give an opportunity for reflection on the significance of the day and is a sign of respect.

11

Reveille and Rouse: In major ceremonies, the Last Post is normally followed by Rouse except at the Dawn Service when Reveille is played. Historically, Reveille woke the soldiers at dawn. The Ode They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. DUNKELD MUSEUM UPDATE

Committee Meeting Our next monthly Committee Meeting will now be held on Tuesday 21 May commencing at 8:00pm at the Dunkeld Museum. Guest Speaker Meetings

On Monday 7 May, Mr Richard Beks, Managing Director of the Hamilton Spectator Partnership spoke about the history of newspapers in the area. Mr Beks is the second youngest of ten children and was born in Geldrop (Holland) to Antonius and Maria Beks, during the Nazi occupation. In 1949 the Beks family arrived in Australia as part of the refugee exodus from Europe. In 1967, Nola (nee Hoy) and Richard Beks took both

shareholding and management roles in the Hamilton Spectator Partnership. On 23 July 1859 the first issue of the ‘Hamilton Courier and Normanby, Dundas, Follet and Villiers and Heytesbury Advertiser’ run by Thomas Shevill, was printed. On 11 February 1860 George Robinson bought the copyright of the ‘Courier’ from Shevill and the ‘Courier’ became ‘The Spectator’ and was published each Saturday. Other newspapers in the early years included the Hamilton Free Press, Hamilton Tribune and Western Farmer Record, Hamilton Independent, The Western Advertiser, Port Fairy Gazette, Portland Chronicle, Portland Mercury and Western District Reporter.

A reminder that Guest Speaker Meetings are not held during the winter months (June, July and August). Our next Guest Speaker Meeting will be held on Monday 3 September.

Dunkeld Museum annual membership of $10.00 is now due.

Dunkeld Mountain Marathon Carnival 1935 On 14 October 1935 the Dunkeld Development League organised a Dunkeld Mountain Marathon Carnival to raise funds for the Hamilton and Glenthompson Hospitals and local charities. The first prize of £100 attracted 37 entrants from all over the state for the main event which involved a run from the racecourse to the top of Mount Abrupt and back. It was won by Bernie Burke of Essendon and the first local home was Buster Middleton.¹ ¹Clabburn, Elise; Field, Iris; Gordon, Betty & Dickie, Kath; Dunkeld &

Is it your groovy clothes or the way you cut your hair? Is it the circle of friends you have or the club you belong to? Does it come from your parents or where you grew up? Is it your genetics, or your culture? What is it that gives you your unique identity? This is an inspiring evening showcasing the work of two very different artists, Frances Rings and Anton. Each reveals their perceptions of the unique Australian cultural identity. Frances Rings has earned a reputation as a leading indigenous choreographer with her two award winning works for Bangarra Dance Theatre whilst Anton takes a more global view of Australians. GARDEN NOTES – MAY Main vegetable plantings during May include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, peas, broad beans and turnips. During May your peach, apricot, nectarine, apple and pear trees should be sprayed with a copper fungicide. This helps to control various fungus diseases such as brown rot, shot hole, scab and freckle. Now is a good time to plant citrus trees, lemon, orange, lime etc. A sunny, well drained position is required – also protection from any strong cold winds. The soil well worked up with the addition of some well rotted animal manure too. Eureka, Lisbon and Meyer are the best lemon varieties for this district. Talk to your nursery man about the merits of the varieties. Washington, Navel and Valencia are the recommended orange varieties. Lime, grapefruit, cumquat, mandarin and tangelo can also be grown successfully. If you wish to change the colour of your hydrangea flowers, you should start treatment in May and continue regularly till flowering. Acid soils produce blue flowers, alkaline produces pink flowers, whilst white flowers will not change according to soil ph. Hydrangea Blue fertiliser will acidify the soil – changing flowers to blue or keeping them blue. Epsom salts or garden lime will keep them pink. Hydrangea pruning can start in May, all that you need to do is to remove any dead or very weak shoots. Flower heads for the next flowering are produced on new shoots, so any old flower heads should be removed down to a good plump bud, well down the stem. May and June are good planting months for strawberries. They need an open, sunny, well drained position with reasonably rich soil. You should make sure that you only plant Government Certified virus free plants which are best purchased from a reputable nursery. Each planting lasts approximately 3-4 years, with the best crops produced in years 2 and 3. After 3 years the plants begin to decline and should be replaced. The main things to watch for in growing are to keep snails, birds and weeds under control. Also it is a good idea to remove diseased, surplus ‘runners’ produced by your plants – as these will drain the plants ‘energy’, reducing the size and amount of fruit. Happy Gardening Stephen Hughan
