Tena Koutou, e hoa ma. Nga mihi nui kia koutou. Dear Parents, Caregivers and friends of the school.

We have had a fantastic term of learning at St Joseph’s. We have learnt a lot about our theme of sustainability. The children and adults who visited the recycling centre were amazed at how our recycling is sorted and utilised. The senior children also enjoyed visiting the waste water treatment plant and water quality checks of the Huatoki River. Thanks to the parents who supported us with these learning experiences. We have another waste audit later in the term and we are looking forward to seeing how our waste has reduced. The enviro team of children are looking at options as to how we can sort waste in the playground - look out for some new bins to collect our recycling and organic waste shortly. On Friday the students participated in the Clean Up NZ challenge. It was amazing to see the rubbish collected from St Joseph’s, the Mangaotuku Walkway and Lynmouth Park. Thanks to Miss de Ridder for organising this event.

Recently the community were invited to complete a survey on the Health Curriculum and Safe Behaviour at school. While we only had 41 families complete the survey we were very encouraged by the results. We are of course aware that there will be incidents between little people in any school but we are determined to make the school safe and therefore conducive for learning for everyone. On the question about how we have dealt with incidents involving the respondents children; 56% of the sample had not had their child involved in an incident of note and a further 40% felt the school dealt with the incident in a timely and appropriate fashion. The students also completed a safe at school survey. 80% of students reported having no worries or concerns at school. The 20% of students who mentioned a concern were in regards to individual fears such as more flooding, their own health, not getting picked up after school, siblings leaving to another school, etc. There were also some mentions of name calling and friend exclusion which we will monitor. While the children were very good at mentioning that they would tell a teacher or myself if they did not feel safe at school, not enough mentioned that they would tell their parents. We will be having some conversations about this at school. Parents can help us out by talking to their children about the need to tell adults at home, and school, when they do not feel safe or if they are worried.

This week I am spending time with principals from all over New Zealand at our annual Conference. It is always great to connect with other principals and hear their stories and challenges and to borrow some of their ideas. There are 23 principals from North Taranaki heading to the conference so we also have time to be together as we work for the common good for the children from our area.

Our cross country was another great St Joseph’s event. I was really pleased with the confidence the children showed when completing our course, especially after the limited build up due to weather. I enjoyed supporting the children at the New Plymouth champs last week also. Congratulations to Paige Scannell who won the nine year old girls.

Last week we received confirmation from Emma McIntosh that she will not be returning to St Joseph’s in a full time position next year. Emma has been on leave this year after a few years of full time work at St Joseph’s. We will be farewelling and thanking Emma for her contribution to St Joseph’s shortly.

You may have noticed some jobs in the paper recently. We are advertising for a new Deputy Principal of the senior school to replace Mrs Morris and we have several teaching positions advertised as well. Some of the positions will be taken on by teachers already in the school. We will also have some new teaching faces in the school in 2018 due to roll growth positions and the need to appoint a new ‘tagged Catholic’ teacher to the team.

Next term we will welcome Mrs Fiona Hopkirk back to the school after her sabbatical. I would like to thank Deborah Boon for covering in Pohutukawa this term and to Jenna Sullivan for her work as the acting Deputy Principal of the Junior School this term while Fiona has been away.

God Bless Mike Dowd (Principal)

BOT REPORT

Thank you to all the parents who participated in the recent Health and Safe at School

Survey. Whilst we would like to have received more responses, we were pleased with the

feedback around student safety and behaviour. The ideas around the Health Curriculum

were also great and will be used by the teaching staff as they further develop our Health

Curriculum Topics.

Next term we will be asking for feedback from the community around the Special Catholic

Character of our school as we prepare for our external review in 2018. We would love all

families to complete this survey when you see it in November.

Mike presented a Ministry of Education report around our student attendance. In all areas,

including similar decile schools, schools in the central North Island, ethnicity and gender,

the St Joseph’s attendance rates are considerably higher than the schools we were

compared with.

We also spent some time comparing our school wide National Standards data from 2016

with the recently released NZ achievement data picture. Once again the St Joseph’s data

was excellent and something we can all be proud of. If you would like to have a look head

to the ‘Education Counts’ website.

The school recently received information on proposed changes to the Devon Street West

road corridor near St Joseph’s. At our Board meeting we reviewed this proposal and

provided feedback to the council. The BOT were supportive of a right turning bay being

introduced into Calvert Rd from Devon Street and safe crossing points at the top of Calvert

Road and the top of Lorna Street where our walking bus students cross. The roading

changes are only at a planning and discussion phase and we will keep the community

informed of developments.

As a board we also discussed some of the feedback from recent meetings held with all

schools in North Taranaki around the Communities of Learning Initiative. The Board is

interested in being involved in conversations around collaborating with other schools

although we still have some concerns around the resourcing and staffing initiatives that

work alongside this initiative.

We recently accepted Emma McIntosh’s resignation. Emma has been on leave this year and

has decided to take on part time employment. We wish Emma all the very best.

Recruitment has begun to fill the Deputy Principal Position in the senior school following

the departure of Sarah Morris. You may have also noticed some other teaching positions

advertised. These vacancies are due to roll growth, replacing Emma and also changing

status of some positions from fixed term to permanent positions which also need to be

advertised.
