found his handicap a wee bit too much!! It was a most enjoyable afternoon of fun bowls followed by our traditional barbecue dinner. Thanks to our new Social Committee Chair Jenny Hole and her team for this green and gold event! The Wrong Bias Jar represented $1035 worth of indiscretions last year, and I have chosen Mary's House, a North Sydney refuge for women and children, as the beneficiary. I will invite a representative from the refuge to the Club to receive our donation. We now have 20 MBC members who have qualified to hold a Responsible Service of Alcohol Card, and are therefore able to serve behind our bar. During this month they will be familiarising themselves with the bar operation and help out on playing days, so please be patient while they learn the ropes. With the 2017 Pennant Season just around the corner, practice sessions for our men have commenced each Friday afternoon from 2.30pm. As well as training drills, members of our coaching team will provide individual assistance to enable

t's been a busy start to the year, and with only one green available we have experienced capacity participation throughout January. The school green was returned in great shape and has earned many compliments - thanks to our greenkeepers Scott and Snowy for an exemplary job. The new reticulation system was also installed during the renovation period, and is now fully operative. The first Club Championships for 2017 got underway in January, with both the Men's Minor Singles and Fours attracting strong fields. Good luck to all participants! We also have strong Club representation in the year's first Zone Championship, the Men's Triples. Two Mosman teams are entered for the Senior Triples to be played at Harbord BC at the end of January, and two teams in the Reserve Triples which will be played at Pittwater BC the same weekend. Go Mosman! Our Australia Day celebrations were again a great success, with over 60 members attending. The 2017 Thong Throwing Champion is Ann Barron who enjoyed a narrow win over Bill Haran who

Pennant players to add to their skills. Everyone wishing to be a part of Mosman's Pennants effort this year are urged to attend. I am pleased to advise that our Selection Panel will again comprise Brian Spear (Chair), Bruce Bodinnar, John Rock and Scott Denham. Thank you for your contribution again this year, gentlemen. February will see the scheduling of Pennant trials to compliment the training sessions - the 2017 Pennants season commences on Saturday 4th March. Please keep an eye out for the the team selections and venues on our Noticeboard. The Club Mufti Pairs also starts this month, always one of our most popular competitions, and played on Friday afternoons. I hope everyone is now regularly using the MBC Website! It is unquestionably one of the most user-friendly and current sites of all Australian bowling clubs. Members can keep up to date with news as it happens on the Home page, Club Championship and Competition draws with progressive results (Latest News-

Latest Results page), enjoy photos of Club activities on the Gallery page, check the full calendar of events for the year and, of course, access the monthly Club Newsletters. There is also a link to the Zone 9 website. Thanks to everyone who has made the Mosman BC website so effective. Two of our more senior members, Bruce Ironside and Jim Kemp, have started sharing a position in their social bowls team. This sees each bowling 2 ends and then sitting out the following 2 ends, giving them a very manageable game. If other members are f inding it challenging to play a full 21 ends, particularly through these warmer months, they should talk with Bruce, Jim or the Bowls Office so they can play similarly. Congratulations and thanks to our catering team, Fran, Jennifer and Corinne. Following a regular inspection of our kitchen and bar areas, the NSW Food Authority have awarded MBC a 5-Star certificate for Hygiene and Food Safety! Good to know we are in such safe hands......

by our own Selectors and we wish her well. It is nice to see Jill Jefferson out from the UK for several months. Welcome back Jill and happy bowling at Mosman. We also have two new members, Karen Van Whye and Ann Titterton so please make them feel welcome at the club. The Membership Committee will be appointing mentors for all new members but there is still nothing like a friendly face and some help in learning the ropes when you are new to a club. Sixty people attended the Australia Day celebrations this year and special thanks go to Morag O’Gorman, Cathy Wilson, Judy and Graham Mitchell and Peter McAdam for their help on the day. Many others also helped spread the workload which is one of the wonderful things about our club, so thank you all. As mentioned, the bowling year has really kicked off. This is, therefore, a good time to remind a l l m e m b e r s p l a y i n g i n competitions that they must wear full club uniform. It is also a good time to ask members to have a good look at their uniforms to see whether anything needs replacing. I would like to see all Pennant

he beginning of the bowling year certainly starts with a bang and we have members playing in our own Major Singles as well as District Fours, starting on 13th February, and a whole raft of carnivals at Belrose, Newport, St Ives and Harbord. Please look at the board in our locker room to see what carnivals may interest you as they are a great way to practice for Pennants as well as an enjoyable day out. Entries are also open for the Saturday Regional Triples Championship but you will have to be quick in getting your entries in. If you can’t form a team please contact De Brown to register your interest. Serious Pennant practice starts Thursday 2nd February and continues on the 9th and the 23rd. We are very fortunate in having Corinne Crouche helping us with these three sessions as well as some of our club coaches, so hopefully this will stand us in good stead when games begin on 14th March. Congratulations go to Corinne who has been appointed to the NSW State Selection Committee. It must be a very difficult job, judging by the comments made

At the January Board MeetingAt the January Board Meeting

A roster for all Responsible Service of Alcohol cardholders to familiarise themselves with our B a r o p e r a t i o n h a s b e e n distributed, and will commence from Wednesday 1st February. The scope of renovation of our kitchen has been approved by Mosman Council. It is expected work will commence in March, and will comprise a renewal of all s u r f a c e s a n d c u p b o a r d s , replacement of the refrigerator, oven and dishwasher, installation of a new double sink and a repaint. Installation of a new gas hot water system to feed the unisex bathroom and ladies powder room will take place in February. It will also supply gas to the barbecue eliminating the need of gas bottles. A series of coaching sessions for women by Corinne Crouche was approved and has commenced in January. Another suggestion from the 2016 Q&A session was for a variety of game types for social bowls. John Dale's working party presented its recommendation which was approved for trial implementation in March, initially on one Wednesday each month. A suggestion to positionally grade all men was discussed, but as no

benefit could be found, the idea was rejected. The new Security system is having some teething issues and will be modified to make it more user-friendly. It is important that as many relevant members as possible know how to engage the alarm, and one-on-one training will be provided.

Communication Practice.

Some of us are better than others at communication between the director at the head and the player on the mat.

Good communication is often the key to winning or losing.

The following simple exercise may help bowlers understand the importance of good communication to and from the head. Follow up discussions may also improve each individual’s awareness of their own communication skills.

The Game Awareness Challenge. This exercise can be carried out with any team format (Pairs, Triples or Fours) but as we approach Pennants it is probably best practiced in the Fours Format.

Set up teams and play four sets of 3 ends.

In the first set absolutely no communication is allowed between the player at the head and the one on the mat.

In the second set verbal communication only is allowed and must be used. (No hand of foot indications from the head)

In the third set visual

communication only is allowed and must be used. (No speaking).

In the fourth set both verbal and visual communication must be used. At the end of the exercise players should meet together and discussed the following:

Which worked best?

Where was any failure or confusion/misunderstanding?

H o w e f f e c t i v e w a s t h e communication process in each case and particularly in sets 2, 3, and 4.

How can each individual improve their communication t e c h n i q u e . S u g g e s t improvements to each other.

Don’t forget that communication is a two way street. The player on the mat should always seek clarification if unsure and should suggest a different shot to the direction given should they see a possible better alternative from the mat.

Other Thoughts

Skips are all different and will have varying views on the degree of help they need from the head. Some like continual advice and encouragement and others prefer to be left alone once they leave the head to go to the mat end. Each skip should let their

third know before their match how much advice they would like to receive. Normally, as skips leave the head, they should have decided exactly what they are going to bowl and if

there are alternatives should have taken time at the head…often with their third… to work out which shot is best. However if the head is altered then any changed circumstance needs to be pointed out by the director in the head.
