SPEAKING FROM THE HEART May arrives with a flourish of warm days, fragrant flowers blooming in a colorful symphony that speaks of variety, vibrancy and joy, and a songfest of light and hearty melodies orchestrated amongst the birds. With each advancing day the sounds, colors and sweet smells of new life surround us. There is an awareness about the beauty, delicacy and ever changing world that surrounds us bringing peace and clarity to our

days. How absolutely beautiful is this newly born day with the opportunity to mold it into our unique vision of fulfillment, purpose and satisfaction.

What are the lessons of spring? What can we learn from this new season of delicately fashioned days? Perhaps it is that after the bleakest of winter days we can realize the warmth, brightness and hope that springs forth from the darkness and despair. There is always a reason to believe in tomorrow - for new opportunities to craft our individualized picture of meaning, purpose and direction. Let us go forth with a stated goal, always cognizant that the initial plan is subject to change in the beat of our heart.

Plans offer structure and focus. Changes in health, finances, living situations and family dynamics may necessitate that we re-negotiate or alter our preliminary course of action and embark on a more prudent version that fits into the re-configured framework. There is the tremendous challenge of repositioning and refocusing the updated picture of tomorrow to fit into who we each are and how we define our lives.

As this month evolves into full bloom spring weather, take advantage of every opportunity to enjoy the mild gentle breezes, warm sunshine and display of hopefulness that the singing birds and nature's bounty of foliage and small wildlife offer. Embrace those people whom you love with tender hugs and soft kisses while carving out quiet moments of honest heartfelt conversation. PLEASE REMEMBER SNAP IN YOUR WILL OR TRUST

There are many ways to give to charity and good causes. Bequests can serve as a memorial to honor the memory of a loved one, or establish a fund for a particular aspect of SNAP. Bequests are often a final communication one has with descendants, a way of demonstrating your values and setting an example for your heirs. A planned gift or bequest to SNAP helps you to determine your legacy in a truly meaningful way and have a profound impact on the future of the organization. Please remember SNAP so that we can continue to provide important services to others in our community. If you have any questions, you may call Ronald J. Schwartz, Elder Law Attorney at 718-347-6100.

MESSAGE FROM THE CENTER DIRECTOR

How Do You Say Goodbye …by Jen Bailey

… When we’re laughing so hard in the dining hall from the joke you’ve told me 100 times? …When we’re dancing and singing together even if there’s no music playing? …When you’ve taught me hilarious swear words in other languages I probably can’t repeat? …When you’re weeping because your hands don’t work as well as they used to? …Or when your eyes aren’t as clear as they used to be? …When your mind is still sharp as ever, despite what your body tells you? ..When you’re spitting nails because now you have to use a cane, or a walker, and @#$% it, you never had to before? …When you let loose your gifts through your quilts, paintings, photography, jewelry, dancing and writing? …When you get me every time with those card tricks you learned here? …When despite all loss, despite all sorrow, despite Life’s churning waters, you show me again and again your courage and resilience? ..When we share the best (I mean THE Best!) hugs? ..When there’s so much fierce light and joy blazing from your faces? I really don’t know how to. So I don’t think I will say goodbye this time. Instead, I’ll take all of you with me into my heart and say: “Thank you, thank you, thank you.” You have been extraordinary teachers to me. All my love, dear ones. All my love. MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD

At the meeting held on April 20th, we had a discussion about the lack of enthusiasm exhibited by both staff and members. It is finally spring and our moods should brighten with the sun. Most classes will be held on a regular basis now that there is no snow and ice to keep us away. We welcome back our snowbirds and ask that everyone make an effort to also welcome new members to the center. Paola Miceli was scheduled to attend and bring some news regarding the work going on at the new center but unfortunately business kept her away. We are still expecting to move by the late fall so keep your fingers crossed. Mindy and Jennifer were in attendance and helped to clear up some items we had on past agendas. Jennifer Bailey left for a new job as of April 30th . She will be working to make the day brighter for a group of people who will welcome her talents and personality. We will miss her terribly and send her a barrel of good wishes for her future. The annual dinner dance is coming soon. Anyone who has not made arrangements to go as of yet, please see Linda Nadel. As president of the board it is my honor to work with such dedicated board members. We have a small say in bringing your suggestions to management and will continue to work hard for resolutions. Please have your questions ready for the open board meeting on May 18th at 10 AM so we can address them.

Carole Vahey, President

IN MEMORY OF JACK FRIEDMAN

SNAP EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER

We sadly announce the passing of one of SNAP’s devoted Board members. Jack Friedman, the Executive Director of the Queens Chamber of Commerce has been an active member of the community all his life, working with civic and religious groups to affect positive change. Under Jack’s leadership, the Chamber of Commerce has taken on a dedicated advocacy role on business issues, not just within the Borough, but throughout the city. Before coming to the Chamber of Commerce, Jack was Chief of Staff to City Councilman David Weprin.

Jack had a very strong sense of civic duty. He was active in all aspects of life in Queens. Having lived in Queens his entire life, Jack had an intimate knowledge and history, combined with his experience as a small business owner, which allowed him to help countless entrepreneurs. Jack Friedman was instrumental in getting the city funding which helped us to purchase the former Bellerose Jewish Center. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Jack’s family and many friends who will miss him very much.
