NEWSLETTERISSUE#26 | JUNE 2018
MALC has been working since 1956 towards Leprosy elimination.Over the passage of time MALC added other disciplines such asTuberculosis and Blindness Control, Maternal Child Health Care(MCHC) and Community Based Inclusive Development (CBID), withthe sole purpose of serving marginalized communities.
Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), like Persons with Leprosy relateddeformities are highly stigmatized. As per the 2017 consensusconducted in Pakistan, the total population with disabilities stood at3.2 million, with around 66% of them staying in marginalized areaswith no access to basic facilities such as healthcare, education oremployment opportunities. Moreover, PWDs in urban areas are alsocompletely excluded from social and economic participation and facebarriers in every walk of their lives.
Through the support of German Leprosy and TB Relief Association(DAHW); MALC’s longstanding partner, MALC was able to concludethe CBID project which successfully ran for a period of 2.5 years.3,822 PWDs in selected project areas of Karachi were identified, registered and provided with necessary intervention in the form ofassistive devices, mobility aids, house modifications, economicassistance for their own chosen income generation activity, vocational training, educational assistance, disability certificates, etc.
MALC along with other network partner organizations workedcollectively to create a political will for the inclusion and rights ofPWDs in Sindh province . As a result, the Sindh Assembly passed a billfor empowerment of PWDs; bill consisting the right of PWDs to lead adecent life with equal opportunities and without any discrimination.
MALC will continue with its CBID acitvities in Karachi, and aspires todisperse in other areas of Sindh as well.
