Resident Council Update October 2020

Tribute to Rev Carroll J. Olm It is difficult to imagine Fairhaven without Rev Olm, who passed away in late September. He was the origi-nal administrator-chaplain of our community, having been hired by the first Board of Directors at an Octo-ber, 1960 Board meeting. In his last report to the Fairhaven Board on June 22, 1989, Rev Olm said “So, thank you, Lord-thank you for nearly three decades of ministerial privilege…Yes, Fairhaven, God has nur-tured us. Through God’s grace we have grown from acorns into oaks.” Rev. Olm’s contributions and dedi-cation to Fairhaven are renowned. He was a true servant leader, and we are grateful for his friendship and ministry. Rev. Olm’s two-volume history of Fairhaven, Fairhaven: God’s Mighty Oak, is a remarkable, de-tailed account of how our community came to be. Copies are available in the Fairhaven Library. Kathy Ross has them for any Prairie Village residents who may be interested.

Dale and Barb Green, Residents of the Month

There are residents who come to Fairhaven and immediately get involved, get to know people, and seem like they’ve been here forever. The Council is pleased to honor such a pair – Dale and Barb Green - as Residents of the Month. Dale has achieved great renown as a gardener in the flower beds and the vegetable garden. He also enjoys working in the woodshop. Barb has a reputation as a great pianist who plays for Wednesday devotions and, as often as the opportunity presents, for Sunday Vespers. She’s also enjoys the bell choir. Here’s what the Greens have to say about their move to Fairhaven, “Moving to Fairhaven a year ago was one of the best decisions we ever made. We are so thankful to be here. We have made many wonderful friends. When things are normal, we marvel at all the activities and opportunities that are available here. The staff is wonderful. There are no regrets about our choice.” When asked, the Greens provided the following information about their pre-Fairhaven lives and fami-ly. “Dale and Barb moved to Fairhaven after living in Janesville for 55 years. Dale worked as an engineer for the City of Janesville until retiring in 1993. Since Barb was still working he was the homemaker for the next 7 years. In addition, he drove truck at various times for MacFarland Pheasant farm and BJ Electric. He also was a volunteer driver for the VA, driving disabled veterans to Madison for their appointments. Barb worked as an Occupational Health Nurse starting that career as a per diem nurse for General Motors and then moving onto fulltime work at Gilman Engineering and later Lear Corporation. Retiring in 2001 she became the parish nurse at the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church, a volunteer position she still is active in. Barb and Dale’s 3 children live in Berlin, NY (near Albany), Chicago and Omaha. They enjoy 6grandchil-dren and 1 great granddaughter. They enjoy traveling and have been on several river and ocean cruises seeing many places they never thought they’d go. Our youngest son is responsible for this wanderlust having lived with his family in Ger-many, Morocco and Cairo so we had no choice but to visit them. Another activity they participate in together is the AWANA program at the Seventh Day Baptist church. Barb works with the Cubbies (preschoolers) and Dale goes wherever he is needed but he really likes the Cubbies best.” Many Fairhaven residents know and appreciate Dale and Barb’s contributions to our community. We are grateful for those and are pleased to recognize them as the October 2020 Residents of the Month.

Nominations for Resident/Volunteer of the Month Please note that the Council has added “Volunteer” to this designation. That gives us an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of non-Fairhaven/Prairie Village residents who contribute to our community. (There is a list of previously-honored residents and volunteers posted on the Lower Level Resident Council Bulletin Board. That list is also on the bottom of each month’s Council agenda which all members have.) Nominations can be made by any Fairhaven or Prairie Village resident to any Resident Council member, preferably in writing. You can always leave your nomination in the Main Lobby Suggestion Box, located by the Main Lobby Coffee Bar.

Little Free Libraries Did you know that there are 10 Little Free Libraries in the Whitewater area, not counting Fairhaven’s? That

one can be found during October in the First Floor “D” Lounge.
