WORKPLACE LITERACY
For more info, call 753-6658 or email: literacy@ literacyvolunteersandro.org
How would you make a go of things if you lost your profession, fled your country and arrived in the United States, a new place with a new language?
Maybe you were a teacher, or a pipefitter on an offshore oil rig, or a physician in a country torn by war and woefully deficient in healthcare. Now you’re here. You want to improve your English, learn about U.S. workplace conventions and prepare to reenter your profession, while contributing to your new community and supporting your family.
Our English Workplace Literacy conversation class, held each Monday evening and run by Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin, is one resource for such new residents.
In this class, we explore American workplace expectations and terminology. We talk-talk-talk in English about work, culture and grammar. We ask questions from what makes a good supervisor to
how best to network with other professionals.
This year our students have come from 11 countries. Many have rece ived the ir work authorization and begun new jobs. Every Monday evening, we work again to equip our students for their new roles.
— Mark Schlotterbeck, ELL instructor
CULTURAL PROFILES PROJECT WITH BATES STUDENTS
In response to requests from last year’s tutor survey, we were able to partner with Bates students Amelia Keleher and Cameron Huftalen to begin a collection of cultural profiles from the various home countries of our students. This is the pilot of a long-term project, with the goal of capturing useful information about the culture and customs of 36 different countries.
T h e p r o j e c t i n v o l v e d a combination of research about specific countries, then an interview with a Literacy Volunteers student from those countries. From there, Amelia and Cameron
summarized the information, using a template, and created a useful profile about each country. We are
starting small, but the profiles they created are eye-opening and very helpful. The first four countries included in the project are Angola, the Central African Republic, China, and Jamaica. Many thanks to Amelia and Cameron for all of their hard work, Sam Boss for coordinating this, and the four LV-A students for sharing
their stories about their home countries. We will have a notebook of these profiles at Annual Meeting for everyone to view.

Literacy is, finally, the road
