Newsletter Spring 2016Connections

Last year, the Winslow Township School District demonstrated continuous improvement in Instruction and Programs, district communications and student attendance. The 2015-2016 school year promises to build upon that momentum with the implementation of new academic programs, the expansion and

improvement of the district’s technology, and the renovation of our buildings.

This fall marks the second year our students are wear-ing uniforms. We believe the program has achieved initial success; in this second year, the Board will strictly enforce the Uniform Policy, particularly at the High School and Middle School. We ask parents/guardians to continue your support of the Dress Code/Uniform Policy by sending your children to school properly dressed and prepared to learn.

Student achievement always has, and will continue to be, our highest priority. We are placing even greater emphasis on developing our Middle School academic programs this year. We are adding a Journalism Class and expanding our present STEM Program to include Environmental Science. These additions will enable us to accommodate more students interested in the Sciences. Also at the Middle School, five teachers will pilot a one-to-one iPad Program that will integrate personalized learning by engaging seventh and eighth grade students, empowering teachers and increasing

academic achievement. Additionally, the Middle School’s TV Production classroom has been upgraded with new wiring and lights to enhance the students’ learning process and increase productivity.

We are welcoming a new Assistant Principal to the Middle School, Mr. Shane Rubin. We have made other administrative changes for the 2015-2016 school year.

We are excited about some of the staffing changes at the High School. Mr. Kurt Marella is the new Principal, and we welcome Mr. Christopher Chambers and Mr. William Shropshire as new Assistant Principals. We also have a new Head Football Coach, Mr. Kemp Carr, who has generated a lot of excitement as we look forward to another season of “Friday Night Lights.”

On the academic side at the High School, we are excited to be implementing an afterschool STEM Program. We hope to have a full-day program in the near future.

We are adding more Chromebooks district-wide, and upgrading the overall infrastructure to accommodate our ever-increasing use of technology. To help facilitate the district’s growing technological needs, the Board hired an additional Supervisor of Technology, Mr. Michael Aponte, who will be joining our staff for the 2015-2016 school year.

When staff and students return for the 2015-2016 school year, they will see the new windows that have been installed at the High School and Middle School, new unit ventilators have been placed in several classrooms at the Middle School, and the courtyard drainage system at School No. 2 has been repaired to prevent future flooding.

Newsletter Spring 2016ConnectionsThe expansion of School No. 4 has been approved and work is scheduled to begin this fall.

Our students always make us proud as they continue to raise the bar with their accomplishments. As in previous years, many of the members of the 2015 graduating class are attending some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the state of New Jersey and in the country, this fall. The Class of 2015 was offered $3.4 million dollars in scholarships.

When we speak of accomplishments, we cannot forget this year’s “Trailblazer for Education,” Austin Yanez, who just returned from his two-month visit to China. Austin, who will be a senior at Winslow Township High School this year, received the National Security Language Initiative Youth

Scholarship, to learn a less commonly taught language (Mandarin) through immersive programs in the country where the language is spoken.

The accomplishments of our students are examples of the district’s growth, improvements to our curriculum and instruction, but more important, to the commitment of our staff.

Winslow Township is a story about growth, and the school district is committed to keeping pace and meeting the educational needs of all of its students. Let us continue to work together to give our children every opportunity for success.

What a summer the 140+ kids who attended Winslow Township School District’s Super Summer Camp had this year! What did they do? Everything!

Each week there was a different theme: STEM in the Summer; Respecting & Honoring Diversity; Castle, Kings and Horses…Oh My!; Show Me the Money; We are ALL Going to College; Art Goes to Camp; Passport to the Universe; and Animal Advocate. Each week’s theme was carried through character education and a sport clinic.

Super Summer Camp also means FIELD TRIPS! Mr. Jack Mills, Director of Special Projects, says field trips are a big favorite with the kids. He said this year the field

trips were really fun! The campers had the opportunity to splash around at Sahara Sam’s Water/Swimming Park, lunch and watch jousting at the Medieval Times Lunch and Tournament Show, tour the US Mint in Philadelphia, visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Edelman Planetarium at Rowan University, and go to the Rainforest Café in Atlantic City – a Super Summer Camp tradition.

During “We are ALL Going to College” week, campers made a special trip to Stockton University, where they toured the school and had the opportunity to eat lunch in the College’s cafeteria.

That’s a lot – but there was more! Campers also had opportunities to enhance their computer skills every day in the Computer Lab. Plus, each day, there was a special STEM educational “power half hour” that focused on science, reading, library skills, math, and engineering. And, of course, every Monday was Motown Monday!

Super Summer Camp Fun!
