Vision and Values Roll Out We have just finished our second Value or Partnership .Due to operational issues we have slipped a bit and many services have only just started on the Recovery Value.
Despite the delays there continues to be great passion and creativity in this piece of work. Here
are some photos linked to the Partnership value
Birmingham Time to Change Hub is now open!!!
This is a call to arms for Challenging Stigma and Discrimination around mental health and is bigger than just Birmingham
Mind. So we are looking for passionate
people to sign up to become Champions within the Hub.
Time commitments are variable and there is some funding available for individuals to do one off events and we will also
be organising three large events over the next 15 months.
So whether you are a staff member, service user or volunteer and you want to be part of the largest social movement in the county please email
[email protected] for when the next information sessions are.
Executive Update We have just recently held our Executive Committee Away Day. Some of the day was given over to Safeguarding Training to ensure all Trustees and Service User Representatives are all up to date on Safeguarding and know what our responsibilities are. We were also joined by our new Deputy Director of
Operations—Ruth Coates and our new Operations Manager for Support Service—Alice Godridge.
We have also held an Executive Committee, Clinical Governance Committee and Finance Committee since the last Newsletter. Some of the issues/reports these committees have considered include
Trustees signed off the budget for this coming year which included inflationary pay increases and increases to mileage rates.
Considered a new mobile phone contract which gives us much better value for money.
Update on Birmingham Mind’s Business Plan
Debated about whether we should do PURE employment support service. Managed to negotiate with BCC a slight revise to the Support Services and there fore we agreed to do PURE and sign the two year extension for Support Services.
Considered the future of Sycamore Lodge due to financial shortfall (since then we have been able to secure additional funding and therefore Sycamore has a longer term future)
Usual reports on Accidents and Incidents/Health and Safety/Complaints and compliments/Trend analysis on Grievances and disciplinary actions/Summary of Self assessments .
Crisis Cafe In partnership with Birmingham and Solihull
Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust we have secured further funding to keep open Birmingham’s first Mental Health Crisis Café.
Located at our Beechcroft site, in Erdington,
the café is open to anyone in crisis between
5:30pm-10pm every, Thursday, Friday and
Saturday.
The service is managed by Donna
Henderson, for Birmingham Mind and
provides support from staff members from
both the Trust and ourselves.
We are keen to let as many know about it
this as possible, so please do share this
with others and make sure that we put the
crisis café in peoples support plans/crisis
plans as an alternative to turning up to A&E
for a mental health crisis.

Pilots Birmingham Mind has always led the way in innovation and testing out new
ideas.
Recently we have been involved in a number of Pilots and we thought we
would share the learning from them
Liaison Psychiatry.
A six month pilot involving two Birmingham Mind recovery support staff
working as part of the Crisis Intervention team at the Queen Elizabeth hospital.
Working alongside clinicians our staff have been involved in supporting
individuals who are turning up to the Accident and Emergency department
distressed as a result of social and environmental issues that are impacting on
their mental health. Birmingham Mind recovery staff offer support in relation
to issues concerned with homelessness, threat of eviction, tenancy and relationship breakdown, as well
as issues to do with lack of money and poverty.
During the period of the pilot, January to July 2019, clinicians have referred approximately 150 individuals
to this service.
Primary Care Liaison
A twelve month pilot that involves Birmingham Mind working closely with BSMHT and Forward Thinking
Birmingham (FTB) clinical staff across a number of federated GP services to support primary care
patients who are experiencing a range of mental health needs. Based in two GP practices, one in the
South and one in the North of the city, our recovery staff have assisted our clinical partners in the triage
of patients, signposting, and supporting individuals who are presenting with a range of social issues such
as poor housing, threat of eviction, benefits advice, homelessness, lack of money, relationship
breakdowns.
The primary care liaison service has now been externally evaluated and the evaluation report highlights
a number of significant benefits to patients and support of GP practices in using this particular approach.
This is definitely seen as the future model of community support and we need to think about how we
position ourselves to be part of the future.
Forward Thinking Birmingham (FTB)
We continue to have a strong and effective relationship with Forward Thinking
Birmingham. The hospital discharge and connections coordinator service that works
closely with young people who are inpatients has been funded again by FTB this year.
The role is primarily to support a positive discharge process from inpatient care for young people,
working closely with a range of accommodation and care providers ensuring they have access to good
accommodation as well as follow up and ongoing support to prevent re-admission.
More recently FTB have approached Birmingham Mind to develop a further role to work across and
between the four recovery hubs managed by FTB Birmingham. We have now successfully recruited to
this role, Morgan Beck one of our Recovery Navigators at Rookery Gardens has appointed to take up
this one year secondment from July. The role will involve supporting community based recovery support
d intervention for young people who are experiencing crisis as an alternative to hospital admission
Have you thought about volunteering? Last year corporate volunteers donated 1890 hours of volunteering and we had over 300 people support the various projects.
Projects coming up are gardening and garden furniture assembly at rookery gardens, car park and garden tidy up at Beechcroft and a greenhouse floor made for support services east. All materials used are to be donated. Interested? Please contact Eamon Reynolds on 0121 608 8001
Welcome Abdi... We are pleased to have recently recruited a Service User
Volunteer at Flint Green House. Abdi has now started
volunteering in our service for 3 hours each week. Since
completing his induction, he has spent time getting to know our
residents, helped out with a resident survey, and attended some
of our sessions on Visions and Values. Those attending the
Service User conference will also see Abdi here as he will be
helping to sign people in.
So here’s an official “Welcome” to you Abdi. A big Thank
You for donating your precious time to Flint Green House and
we look forward to all the great work you will be doing with us.
Thank You RBS... Rookery Gardens would like to say a very
special Thank You to the volunteers of
Royal Bank of Scotland for constructing our
new greenhouse and new tree bench in the wellbeing orchard.
Volunteers painting fences at
Webbcroft Road in Stechford.
We Love Volunteers Corporate and Individual volunteers are invaluable
in supporting the work we do, so in honour of volunteers
week, we have showcased some of their amazing stories.
We extend our continued thanks to everyone who has
volunteered for Birmingham Mind.

PURE Employment Support This is an exciting and unique opportunity for Birmingham Mind and
we are please to announce our formal involvement as one of the providers of the Pure Project.
The Pure Project brings together a range of co-ordinated interventions all tailored to meet service users aspirations and goals.
We have a staff team of Employment Intervention Workers embedded within Support Services ready to provide both one to one support and access to a range of services / interventions all aimed at supporting people in their journey into training, education, apprenticeships and or employment opportunities.
The support includes:
- Building your confidence and resilience
-Set and achieve employment, training and educational goals
-Support you to develop skills such as assertiveness, motivational, stress management and effective communications
-Support you to develop your career planning including: CV preparation, job and educational application processes
-Practical support such as travel training, time management,
interview practice
Provide better off in work calculations to enable you to make informed judgements in relation to their financial circumstances
Access to work support
Provide access to business support and tools to set up own business or a service user led social enterprise.
If you are interested in participating in the Pure Project all you need to do is contact
Birmingham Mind Pure Project on0121 359 1151 or via [email protected] to request an initial appointment.
The Linked Up (pilot) aims to change the way older people’s hobbies, interests and
aspirations are heard, understood and used to reduce loneliness and increase community and
neighbourhood connectivity within retirement housing and extra care services.
Each element of the project design and delivery will be created in co-
production with the residents and supported by a staff team led by
Birmingham Mind in partnership with Housing 21.
This idea for the project is in direct response to the many older people in
existing accommodation services expressing a sense of loneliness who do
not want to burden family and friends or to access services as they feel it
would label them as failing but have a desire to connect to others through
shared interests as well as explore new challenges and opportunities.
The partnership has recognised that older people living in retirement or extra care housing where
there is no longer any onsite provision or support focussed on their holistic needs is contributing to an
increased numbers of people with moderate mental health issues with main causes being isolation,
loneliness and lack of stimulation.
We have appointed Rebecca McGrory To the role and we will update people with how we get on.
Baking for Wellbeing
Staff and Residents at Flint
Green House recently
participated in Cupcake day and
raised some money for
Alzheimer’s Society by baking
and then selling cupcakes. We
also utilised our Resident
Meeting to raise awareness of
Alzheimer’s. Our bakers said “I
really enjoyed making and decorating the cakes - it was therapeutic” and “it
was really worth doing and makes you happy that you are helping others”.

EFL Trophy
On the 13th May , the English Football League (EFL) Trophy toured
Birmingham, as part of the 2018/2019 partnership between Mind and the EFL. John Lewis in Grand Central hosted the tour for us, giving Birmingham shoppers the chance to have their picture taken with the trophy. Lots of visitors donned their self sticks
and smart phones to take a snap! Many thanks John Lewis and EFL !!

Birmingham Mind at Birmingham Pride
For our fifth year
running, Birmingham
Mind was extremely
proud to take part in the
annual Birmingham Pride
parade. We had a
wonderful day and so
many people shared
their support and told us
that it was great to see
Birmingham Mind in the
Parade.
Catch Us If You Can... Summer offers us lots of opportunities to join lots of com-
munity events. Our Community Development Worker
Team will be at a number of events throughout the sum-
mer, promoting our work, so please do pop along and say
hi if you see them—we will be at
1. Moseley Street Festival on 6th July
2. Balsall Heath Carnival on the 6th July (PM only)
3. Handsworth Park on the 7th July — see flyer.
Football In Mind
Richard Waite, Damien Perry and Damien Triplett decided to host a charity football in aid or Birmingham Mind. Football In Mind was created because these young men all felt passionately about mental health after having experiences in their lives. They managed to organise a fun packed day at the Trico stadium in Redditch. They had ex-footballers from Birmingham City, Aston Villa and the Baggies to take part - who drew in a crowd of hundreds even though the heavens opened for the best part of the day. The CDW team were there to promote Birmingham Mind and support the event.
They managed to raise approximately £2,700 which will be matched by Taylor Wimpey, a fantastic amount. Well done and massive thanks Richard Waite, Damien Perry and Damien Triplett for all
their hard work and effort.

Roots & Shoots Roots and Shoots vegetable growing group first met on 05/02/19. It was formed to compliment Meet and Eat healthy eating drop in. It provides healthy home grown veglables that can be cooked at Meet and Eat. Service users are also able to benefit by being able to take produce home.
For service users past and present experiencing isolation , this project provides an opportunity to come together in a relaxed friendly environment to prepare
raised beds, plant and gain learning in growing vegetables.
Having gained funding from Quakers for Meet and Eat, we were given the opportunity to use an unused raised bed. We have also had support from Elaine Kite who is a volunteer for Tower Hamlets Parks and Open Spaces running the growing zone at Mile End Play Park. Elaine has donated onion bulbs and vegetable seeds that we have planted. This creating more opportunities for partnership working and adding social value to what we do.

Spotlight of Success
Name of your team: Support Service—North Team
Numbers of people in your team 20
What does your team do? The North team provides Supported Housing and Floating Support to the citizens of North Birmingham. Our aims are to meet Birmingham City Councils supporting Peoples contractual requirements within our service model.
Our aims and objectives are to build and develop resilience within communities in the North. Most of the work is carried out on a one to one basis with people in their own homes an in the community but due to the levels of need we have started to develop more groups. So where there is an identified need for a service we aim to support our service users and ex-service users to set up and establish their own support / activity group which they will run independently. The North Team works in a person centred approach to support service users “to do for themselves” ensuring that we don’t fall into the practice of “doing for” which whilst can be quicker and achieve good outcomes it can encourage dependency on the service/worker.
Our new service model is more tailored to the demographics of Birmingham Communities, we live in a diverse and effervescent city and one type of support does not fit all. Support has to be needs led and person centred, teaching, coaching or enabling are the vehicles we now pride ourselves on using when delivering support for the ultimate goal of independence and recovery.
Please tell us about some positive achievements that have been made over the last 2 years that meet Birmingham Minds Aims and Objectives.
The North Team pride themselves on their ability to develop strong links and partnerships, over the past two years the North Team have established working relationships with Sutton and Erdington Jobcentres where clients have sought advice and guidance and have been sign posted or referred to Birmingham Mind for Floating Support. The Job centre advisors have really benefited from having Birmingham Mind staff being part of the drop in at their centres as they have gained knowledge, information and understanding on Mental Health issues and how they can impact on some ones lives.
The North have had their North Connect running for two years which is currently undergoing some reconstruction, we have also made links community hubs, libraries, churches, leisure centres, food banks, community cafes,
There are some exciting plans for the future in meeting the community’s needs and we are limited only by our imagination—and funding of course!! But it is great news that we have a further 2 years worth of funding as our contract has been extended.
