MONACO SOLAR & ENERGY BOAT CHALLENGEThe curtain came down on the MonacoSolar & Energy Boat ChallengeSaturday 6th July with a prize-givingceremony rewarding both thecompetition winners on the water andthe Tech Talk presentations.The event was the perfect opportunityto highlight and put into practicesolutions for sustainable yachting, theresult of years of Research &Development. Organized by the YachtClub of Monaco in partnership with theInternational Powerboating Federation(UIM) and Prince Albert II of MonacoFoundation, the 6th edition of acompetition that is unique in the worldand which attracted 34 teams (14nationalities) offered a glimpse of thefuture in which all are winners:researchers, academics, engineeringstudents and professionals working inthe yachting and energy sectors. Allare committed to developing andtesting credible alternatives to fossilfuels to shape the future of propulsionfor the boats of tomorrow.An incubator that puts the spotlight ondevelopments taking place, theMonaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge2019 is very much in line with the visionof Yacht Club de Monaco PresidentHSH Prince Albert II, who came to meetexhibitors and encourage contestants:“Training and educating our youngpeople, their development, creativity,awareness and involvement are theguarantors of a better future (...). Let usgive them a chance, give them all the

tools they need to succeed and aboveall put our trust in them.”

Be it in the Solar, Offshore or Energyclasses, competition in the race eventswas intense. In the solar group that hasbeen here since the start and was bestrepresented with 19 entrants, the Dutchcontinue to sweep the board withvictories for New Nexus (Open Class)and Sunflare (A Class). For the first timesince this event was launched in 2014,the solar fleet managed a three-hournon-stop race covering nearly 20nautical miles (nm) on the sea,evidence of how progress continues tobe made with this technology.In the Offshore Class, the battle for topspots was between Dutch students inthe TU Delft Solar Boat Team andScots yachting professionals in the VitaYachts team. The Scots won the 16nmendurance race, while tomorrow’sengineers from the Netherlandsclinched victory in the 32nm Long Racewith a focus on maintaining theirmachine’s range and not speed.Launched only last year, the EnergyClass proved to be very popular withseven entrants responding to achallenge to design the most powerfuland durable propulsion system for astandard catamaran hull supplied bythe YCM. Victory went to the FrenchWave ESTACA Team, who dominatedall the contests – endurance race,slalom and match race.

Sunday, 7th July, EVIAN (France): Team Amaravati’sJonas Andersson held of a sustained challenge fromShaun Torrente to take a well-deserved sixth career-victory at the UIM F1H2O Grand Prix of France inEvian to move into second place in the worldchampionship standings. “It is great to win again,”said Andersson after taking his first win since 2016. “Iselected a prop that would give me a chance to beatPhilippe [Chiappe] to the first corner but I didn’t do itand he just went away and was so fast. But then hebroke and from that point I just tried to control therace. I knew Shaun was there, but I didn’t think hewould take any risks in terms of the championship.But if he had tried to pass, I had more speed so Ithink I would have covered it off.”

Third place went to Torrente’s Abu Dhabi teammateThani Al Qemzi, but once again there was moresuffering and heartbreak for CTIC F1 Shenzhen driverPhilippe Chiappe whose race came to a prematureend for the fourth time in five outings on Lac Leman,retiring from a comfortable lead on lap 15 of 40..

The battle for the win and podium places hinged ona The battle for the win and podium places hingedon a dramatic turn of events on lap 15 when pole-sitter and race leader Chiappe suddenly slowed andpulled off the circuit handing the lead to Andersson,with Al Qemzi closing down and passing histeammate just before the yellow flag was raisedwhen Maverick F1 Racing’s Cedric Deguisne barrel-rolled out of the race. But the order for the restartreverted to the positions of the lap before with theunfortunate Al Qemzi losing out.

From the restart Andersson was able to control thepace out front but was unable to shake off Torrente,his lead fluctuating between two and four seconds,but held on to run out the winner by 1.97s.

Second place for Torrente keeps him on top in thechampionship standings with Abu Dhabi extendingtheir lead in the Teams Championship to 30 pointsfrom Team Amaravati.

For the first time in the history of powerboat racing,in Latvia, Karlis Degainis from team Motorsport 77Aizkraukle participated in Latvian championship racewith speed boat with electric engine. This speedboat is equipped with 48 V 10 KW engine with aircooler, 24-72 V 500a controller with air-cooler andbattery 48 V 2.3 KW and is capable of developing aspeed of 40-45 km/h. The unique project combinesclassic powerboat with modern technology - awooden racing boat with an electric motor! The hullof this speedboat was built in 2018 from a mahoganyplywood, weighing 45 kg without pilot. The GT15 hull

has been designed and built in Jelgava, Latvia byJanis Millers- Millers Boats.

Atis Slakteris, President of Latvia NA said: ”This yearwrites a new page in the history of Latvia'spowerboats. Latvian Water Motorsports Federationis proud that a new, perspective, environmentallyfriendly boat class with electric engine has come toour country. The present and future plans of theFederation are closely linked with involvement ofchildren and teenagers in water motorsports.”

On Saturday 6th July, the UIM and the Yacht Club Monacoco-hosted the 3rd edition of the International Motorsports &Environment Workshop. The event held alongside the 2019Solar and Electric Boat Challenge was presented by UIM andGAISF President Dr. Raffaele Chiulli and Engineer MarcoCasiraghi, and assembled multi-stakeholder representativesfrom the FIA, FAI and UIM, the renewable-energy industryand Universities, all presenting their own experiences & bestpractices with sustainably powered propulsion systems formobility on water, land and air.

The main goal of the workshop was to share knowledge andexperience in the field of sustainable mobility and to providea platform to discuss “How to contribute to a better worldthrough sustainable green energies”.

The basic principle of information and educationprograms is to preserve the spirit of sport asdescribed in the WADA Code. It is also to provideAthletes with the information, values and life skillsthat they need to stay “clean”. Article 18 of the 2015WADA Code states that information and educationmust be mandatory elements of any preventionprogram. Awareness campaigns aim to make surethat the target audiences are conscious of an issueand they can be part of an information andeducation program.

Effective prevention and clean sport value-basededucation programs are important to create astrong doping-free culture. WADA has developedresources for pilots, riders, coaches, doctors andany other person who wishes to know more aboutanti-doping that everyone can easily consult byclicking here.

The International Powerboat Federation (UIM) haslaunched this year the “UIM Anti-DopingEducational Program”, aiming to increase theawareness about Anti-Doping and Clean Sport.The “UIM Anti-Doping Educational Program”provides factual knowledge (what people shouldknow) within a specific and relevant context that is

immediately accessible by the Powerboating pilotsand Aquabike riders.

The UIM Educational Program delivers through theUIM Officials the most important keys and facts ofa free and clean sport to all pilots and drivers.

Educational programs have been delivered duringthe UIM Formula 2 World Championship in Kaunas,Lithuania, UIM F1H2O World Championship inPortimao, Portugal and during the UIM-ABPAquabike World Championship in Olbia, Italy andthis is just the tip of the iceberg, as the UIMEducational Program has just started!
