Haidong Gumdo news from Korea

Huge congratulations to HDG Instructor Luke who has a

bit of extra baggage to bring home after the Haidong

Gumdo World Championships. Luke and Megan joined

the Australian National Team to take part in the 2012

World Championships in Korea. Luke has also been part

of the coaching team for the Mountain Wolves contin-

gent.

The Championships are divided into three parts - the

Koreans hold their own preliminary competition while

the competitors from the rest of the world compete

amongst each other. The Koreans then compete against

the best of the rest of the world competitors in the fi-

nals. Luke won his way through to the finals for both

bamboo cutting and patterns, defeating over 40 interna-

tional contestants. He finished the Championships with

bronze medals in both events - a fantastic result.

The object of bam-

boo cutting is to get

a perfect 45⁰ angle

on every cut. Luke

demonstrates a

perfect right angle -

darn fine cutting,

good enough to

compete on the

international stage.

Term 3 Sparring Workshop - Saturday, July 28

We will be holding our second sparring workshop on Saturday

morning, July 28 from 10am to midday at Glenmore Park Public

School. This is the perfect opportunity to really polish up your

sparring skills, working with our instructors and senior team lead-

ers.

Students need to bring along ALL their guards. We will have chest

guards available on the day but you will need to bring your

mouth guard, arm and shin guards, and groin guard. If you have a

head guard please bring that along too.

If you would like to be part of this session, please let Sue or

Dave know before the day.

Master Andrew’s “flip side”

Many of you know Master Andrew

is our Wolves Master, the “ginger

ninja” who presides over our grad-

ings and keeps us all inspired. How-

ever, there is another side to Mas-

ter Andrew. He has also been a pro-

fessional musician for many years and is about to release a very

special album of his own material, some of it inspired by his work

with a terminally ill boy, Joel. The album will raise funds for a

Spiritual Black Belt program that will help other children like Joel.

Look out for the Dragon Fly album which will be released in Sep-

tember/October this year. It’s a beautiful album that will help

make a difference to the lives of terminally ill children.

Sue Adlam all completed their TKD black belt gradings, and

Blake Stevens completed his TKD 2nd Dan with a very ac-

complished and confident performance.
