2015 MCOA Board President

I want to thank my fellow Board members for giving me the opportunity to serve as President in 2015. As a Board, we greet the New Year with a great deal of optimism as we embrace the responsibilities and challenges that lie ahead. We are dedi-cated to continue the Moss Creek tradition of managed growth tempered by financial discipline.

2015 Board Officers Lawrence Taylor, Vice President Lou Natale, Treasurer Katy Myer, Secretary

Committee Chairs Barry Burgoyne—Long Range Plan Peter Carlson—Water Oak Utility Diane Dahl—Bostwick Recreation Katy Doran—Architectural Review Board Chuck Eberly—Green Lou Natale—Finance Katie Myer—House & Grounds Lawrence Taylor—Marketing

In addition, Dom Bonanno, 2012 President of MCOA is serving as chair the Audit Committee and Dave Neff has agreed to be the Board Representative on the Nominating Committee.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our retiring Board members, Jan Alpert, Jim Vogel and Dave Neff. Individually and collectively they have put in numerous hours working on projects and issues on behalf of Moss Creek. Their contributions are too numerous to list but suffice it to say that they added a great deal of value to the board and they will be missed.

I had the pleasure of attending the annual employee appreciation luncheon in late November. Many service anniversaries were recognized including the Edward brothers who have combined service of 60 years! It was gratifying to see the spirit and dedication our associates have for Moss Creek and to witness first- hand the energy and enthusiasm of our support team.

2015 will be a challenging year for the Board as we undertake the renovation of the North Course, the remodel / expansion of the Tennis Clubhouse and the implementation of Phase 1 of the Bostwick Point Park project. In addition, we will con-tinue to develop plans and cost estimates for the Causeway construction project scheduled for 2016. A significant amount of research was conducted last year by the Master Plan Task Force led by Chuck Eberly. This plan as it continues to be refined will serve as a blue print for the future best use of our open land and recreational areas. Should you want to review the details, the plan is located on our website.

As of this writing, the 2014 financial reports are close to being finalized. While several year- end balance sheet entries have yet to be complete, we have enough data on hand to know that our net operating surplus will be better than planned. On the non-operating side, we ended November with 78 property transactions that generated $1,300,500 in certificate in-come. These monies will be added to the capital reserve fund targeted to underwrite the ongoing maintenance and re-placement of our existing capital assets. Every three years we have an independent review of these assets to identify fu-ture expenditures that will be necessary to properly maintain our facilities and equipment.

It is interesting to note here, that over the last five years, we have had over 350 property transfers resulting in a new wave of Members who have found Moss Creek to be a compelling place to live. We hope to tap into the talents and time of our new neighbors in the years to come.

For 2015 we expect total operating revenue to be $9,329,118. This number includes Association and Activity Fees along with golf and tennis revenue, food and beverage income, marina and dry storage charges, fitness center revenues, front gate fees, Water Oak Utility revenue and some miscellaneous income. Total operating expenses are anticipated to total $9,264,460 leaving us with a planned net surplus of $64,658.

We were fortunate this year to have a large number of Members volunteer to serve on committees. The downside of this was that we had so many volunteer that all requests could not be satisfied. In selecting Members for committees, we at-tempted to strike balance of new Members and those who have served in the past. As a Board, we were excited to see the number of first time volunteers willing to take on the challenge of committee work.

A note of thanks to Lawrence Taylor and the Marketing Committee for taking the initiative to plan the development of a pro-motional video and Member/Staff testimonials for use on our website and other marketing purposes. A special thank you to Scott Caywood for producing a first class product at a deep discount to our Community. We owe Scott a note of grati-tude for all the time and effort he put into the project!

I also want to thank the residents of Palm Isle for their wonderful holiday light display. We are lucky to have our own ver-sion of Dove St. Another example of the tremendous spirit embedded into the Moss Creek culture.

In November our General Manager, John Miller, earned the designation of Certified Chief Executive (CCE) from the Club Managers Association of America. John has been an active member of CMAA for over 25 years. The CCE designation is the second highest level of professional certification awarded by CMAA and only about 4% of their members have attained this level.

I think it important to clarify the policy regarding jeans in the Clubhouse. As stated in our Rules and Regulations “casual sports attire is acceptable throughout the clubhouse. During the evening meal hours, resort or dressy casual attire is ac-ceptable in the Blue Heron and Egret dining room; casual and sports attire is acceptable in the Grill Room. Dress jeans are considered casual attire, but are restricted to the Grill Room, except Wednesdays after 5:00 pm. Wednesday evening is casual dining at the Clubhouse and jeans are permitted throughout the Clubhouse”. This last sentence was added to the Rules & Regulations in December in support of the Casual Wednesday initiative that the House Committee is promoting beginning in January.

As a final note, I’m excited to leave the turmoil of the unfortunate Fitness Center situation behind us. Special thanks to Suzanna Johnston and the entire staff for all the time and effort they put in to minimize the disruption to our Member when Active Private abruptly terminated their services. Sharon McDonnell our new Fitness Director brings a wealth of education and experience to the position and has an expansive view of what her role will be going forward. As a Community we will all benefit from this wonderful addition to our Staff.

General Manager

Randy Connelly

Chief of Security

I would like to invite all Members to come to the Clubhouse on January 21st at 2:00pm for an informative crime prevention seminar. We will have a representative from Beaufort County Sheriff’s Crime Prevention to discuss a variety of topics that will be very beneficial to all.

Master Sergeant Mike Jennings has various topics to discuss, including the list that I will ask him to cover. *Home Security Guidelines *Apartment/Condo Security Guidelines *Neighborhood Watch *Crime Prevention for Senior Citizens *Crime Prevention for Persons with Physical Disabilities *Personal Safety for Visitors/Contractors

We anticipate a large participation from the Membership, as well as staff, so please RSVP to Melissa Sheire at [email protected] or 836-6121 so Mst/Sgt can prepare for handouts, etc.

*Fraud Prevention *Alzheimer's Disease - Safe Return Program *Safe Shopping Tips *Door, Locks, Lighting, Windows, Safes & Alarms *Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

It’s hard to believe that I have been at Moss Creek nearly a year already. I have met a great number of members, and I am developing better knowledge of both the operations and the culture of our community. I am looking forward to 2015 and the exciting challenges that we will tackle this year. And for those of you who I still haven’t had the pleasure of meeting, please know that I welcome your call or visit at the office, and I will continue to be visible at events and activities around the commu-nity.

Beginning in January, we will have a casual theme every Wednesday evening in the Clubhouse. Chef Lenny will prepare a special menu, and casual attire including blue jeans will be welcome throughout the Clubhouse. This Casual Wednesday con-cept is another effort by our House Committee and Clubhouse Management to provide dining and social opportunities for all members. To accommodate the new theme on Wednesdays, we will be moving some monthly specials to Thursday evenings. The Birthday Buffet and Chef Theme Dinners will join Trivia Night to make Thursday evenings the event night at the Clubhouse. Remember that the Clubhouse will be closed from January 1 through January 8, and will reopen for dining at 4:30pm on Friday, January 9th.

Our new Fitness Director, Sharon McDonnell, is planning a broad array of classes and activities to promote fitness and well-ness at Moss Creek in 2015. She outlines some of what is in the works in her Advocate column this month. Along with the tran-sition in personnel in the Fitness Center we have also made a few changes in the layout of the center itself. The most notice-able change is the creation of an office area to your left as you enter the center. The main purpose of this area is to provide a private space for our fitness professionals to meet with members. The personal training process includes consultation with members about health matters which requires a private setting. While we were reluctant to take away any of the already limited space in the Fitness Center, continued use of the mechanical room as an office and meeting space, as had been done by prior trainers, is not permissible under the building code and thus is not a suitable option going forward.

Early in the new year we will be introducing a new reservation system for golf tee times, tennis court reservations, and club-house dining and events. The new system, ForeTees, is used by several of the other quality clubs in our area. It will offer a more comprehensive and user-friendly system for golf and tennis reservations, and introduce an on-line reservation option for dining and events. We will have some orientation sessions in January to introduce members to the new system, and ForeTees also has “how to” videos online describing use of the systems.

Finally, I want to convey a big “Thank You” to all of our members who contributed to the Employee Holiday Fund this year. This special gift was distributed to our employees shortly before Christmas. Your generosity is very much appreciated by everyone on our Moss Creek team.

The water filtering process is very important to the environment before it reaches our bodies of water. Moss Creek has numerous ditches that provide natural filtering of water during rainfall. The slower the water reaches the water bodies, the more filtering is done to the water. Water filtering also provides plants the chance to absorb some of the water as well as help to refill the water table in the soil profile. We occasionally meet with Beaufort county officials that monitor the rainfall runoff. They have programs in place with tax incentives for com-panies who work to improve their storm water run-off quality. Many of these programs we are already doing. Moss Creek is a known natural area in the Lowcountry and leads in many areas when it comes to pro-viding a positive impact to the local environment. We will be looking to continue to be a leader in 2015 by increasing our storm water system maintenance. Slow draining or water sitting in ditches can look bad. However, if you look at it as a process for nature to filter the rain before it gets into our beautiful water features around Moss Creek; it could provide an under-standing of the use of our drainage ditch system at Moss Creek. Thank you for helping us in having a positive impact on our environment here at Moss Creek.

It's time for garden catalogs to arrive in the mail. January is a great time to start planning what you will be planting in your garden. Look through your catalogs and find the vegetable seeds for your garden. Some flower varieties should be started in January. In a warmer environment you can plant certain vegetables but must be ready for a frost. Indoor herbs are always great to grow in a sunny windowsill. Herbs Herbs are defiantly the most popular indoor plant to grow throughout the winter months. Try your hand at these 5 most popular herbs: Basil, Chives, Oregano, Parsley, Thyme. Annual and Perennial Flowers

Now is a great time to get your spring flowers germinating and ready for spring! There are many different varieties of annuals and perennials with different growth times. Pay attention to grow times so that your flowers are ready to be planted after last frost. Below are some good varieties to start in January for a last frost in March and April! Annuals: Zinnias, Marigolds, Geraniums Perennials: Rudbeckias, Daisies, Poppies, Coneflowers

Golf Shop Tip of the Month:

[täx çÉâ xäxÜ v{|ÑÑxw ã|à{ çÉâÜ {çuÜ|wR

Happy New Year! The Golf Shop staff is excited for the beginning of another great year at Moss Creek. We strive every day to exceed your expectations and create an optimal golfing environment for everyone to enjoy. To provide you better service and improve op-erations we are moving to a new on-line starting time reservation system called ForeTees. January is our test month to ensure we have all details programmed correctly on the back side; we are shooting to go live to the Membership in February. In an effort to make this a smooth transition for the Members, Tom and I are holding three demonstration seminars in January to show you how the new system looks and works. A ForeTee’s feature we are very excited about is on-line event registration for Men’s 9-Hole Club Tee, Men’s Day, Ladies Day, Ladies Nine, and all of the Moss Creek Golf Club events. The seminars take place in the Clubhouse at 3:00pm on Friday, January 9th, Wednesday, January 14th and Saturday, January 17th. We may add more training dates in February if neces-sary. So please come join us and learn all about ForeTees.

I would like to welcome two new staff members; Isaac Gatewood and Jim Harrison. Isaac joined the Outside Ser-vices staff in November. Isaac is from New York and is aspiring to begin the PGA apprentice program. He previ-ously worked at Moon Brook CC, Lost Tree Club and The Pepper Pike Club. Isaac attended Kent State for three years and hopes to attend USCB in the near future to com-plete his accounting degree. Long-time starter, Bob Wolff, has decided to hang up his Starter/Ranger hat. We thank Bob for his years of service, but not to worry, you may oc-casionally see his smiling face as a substitute. Jim Harri-son has joined the Starter/Ranger crew. Jim is from Ohio and has retired to the Lowcountry. Please join me in wel-coming Jim and Isaac to the team. Lastly, I want to thank staff member, Scott Schoiack, for his eight years of service to Moss Creek. Scott is planning on a move in the near future to North Carolina and we wish him well in his pursuits. Scott is a tremendous gentleman, has been wonderful to work with over the years, and will definitely be missed.

2015 Golf Booklets/Schedules

Just a reminder, the 2015 booklets will be sent out by mid-January to all Golf Club Members. They will also be available in the Golf Shop.

This is a tip we covered in one of our videos and it is such a great tip, I thought it would be good to repeat. When you are in a closely mown area and not too far off the green, putting is a great choice. If you get more than a few feet off the green, the putter gets more diffi-cult to judge the speed because the putter only has four to six degrees of loft. If you use your 22-24 de-gree hybrid, the ball will not get caught up in the grass and the ball will roll out beautifully. Set up taller to the ball than a full swing, choke the club slightly if it is more comfortable for you, and feel free to use your putting grip. Give it a try!

Fitness News

I would like to thank everybody for giving me a warm welcome to the Club. Moss Creek has a beautiful fitness and pool facility with the best sunrises and sunsets anywhere in the Lowcoun-try. I am excited to be a part of the management team and looking forward to assisting everyone with their health and wellness goals. Currently the Fitness Center is offering 12 physical fitness classes a week. One goal for the fitness department is to add more variety of classes to the aerobic schedule that would accommodate participants of all levels of ability. In the month of January, I will be instructing a new Stretch with Core class on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. Join me and learn how to stretch muscles you thought you never had. Stretching increases your range of motion, which means your limbs and joints can move through a greater range of mo-tion helping to ward off injury. I noticed that Moss Creek has numerous areas available for outdoor activities. In 2015, you can look forward to the Fitness Center providing activities which utilize the open areas, water access, and beautiful pools to host both health related activi-ties and family oriented celebrations. I like to offer theme classes during specific times of the year. Theme classes would be special classes scheduled in addition to our normal sched-ule of classes that would end with a social allowing Members to meet fellow Members. Another goal for the fitness department is to add new fitness and wellness programs; such as, nutritional coaching, grocery shopping tours, aquatic post rehabilitation, and fit for golf and tennis conditioning programs. In January, join me for our Wel-come Back to Fitness program on one of the following dates: Wednesday, January 7th—10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 13th—2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 15th—11:00 a.m. Friday, January 23rd—1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 28th—10:00 a.m.

The main objective of the Welcome Back to Fitness program is to orient Members to the fitness facility. Join me for a compli-mentary guided tour of the Fitness Center. I will be demon-strating how to operate all the cardiovascular and strengths machines correctly and safely. In addition, I will be providing tips on how to maximize your time and effort spend in the gym to increase your metabolism and muscular strength. Please call the Fitness Center to make a reservation for the Welcome Back to Fitness clinic. We will be limiting each clinic to 10 Members. Please note, these tours will be informational and reviewing basic exercises. I will be happy to schedule a private personal training session for those Members seeking guidance on a specific conditioning program tailored for each individual. Thank you again for welcoming me into this wonderful Com-munity. 2015 will be a great year as the fitness staff continues to expand and enhance physical fitness programs and ser-vices to meet the expectations of the Membership.

Clubhouse News

Jim O’Connor

Clubhouse Manager

As I always do at this time of the year, I want to thank everyone that made 2014 a great year. I would like to thank the entire Clubhouse staff that put in hours and dedication to help ensure that the Member first culture is alive and well. Also, I want to thank all of the other de-partments and their staff for working together and making sure all the events we do come together without a hitch. Lastly, before I move into 2015 I want to thank all the Members and their families, the committees and Board for all their hard work. With all that being said, we have some wonderful changes coming in 2015. As all of you know, the trend for clubs across the nation has been to relax the dress code policy. We have seen through feedback from surveys that Moss Creek is no exception. We have decided to make Wednesday nights a casual night where denim will be permitted throughout the ENTIRE Clubhouse. We will be offering our Grill Room menu along with some fun casual special entrees and appetizers. I know some of you are already thinking what about our Wednesday Night Birthday Night on the last Wednesday of every month. Well, this is where it gets interesting! We will dedicate Thursday nights as theme nights. We will be offering special dinners on these nights such as our Calabash Seafood Buffet on January 22nd. We will of course have Trivia on the third Thursday of every month and the “It’s Your Birthday” night on the last Thursday of every month. We will be then try to fill the few remaining with Chef Dinners, Wine Dinners, and other fun events. These changes should help the entire Membership enjoy their Club with an even more diverse schedule of events. I am very excited to see these changes take effect. Now this next change has been a long time coming and has been given a lot of thought. With golf and tennis moving to online reservations with the FORETEES reservation system, we will be doing the same in 2015. We wanted a system that would let the Member be able to work through one system and didn’t have to learn multiple systems for reservations for golf, tennis, and dining. I am very excited for these systems to come online in 2015. In closing, I again thank everyone for making 2014 special and look

forward to an even better 2015.

I know its cold now, but believe it or not the culinary team is already working on menu planning for the 2015 pool season. The biggest hit of the 2014 season was a healthy option chicken breast flatbread topped with an oregano-yogurt sauce. This is a great condiment and is a healthier way to add flavor to many grilled dishes. It works well with shrimp, pork tenderloin, and even beef. The key is to have some nice fine shaved lettuce or cabbage along with some chopped tomato and onion. The contrast of the char grilled flavors along with the crisp vegetables and the cool yogurt sauce are a great combination. For the most health benefit, be sure to use whole grain flat bread.

Oregano-Yogurt Sauce • 32oz. Plain yogurt • .5 tsp. coarse black pepper • 1 tsp granulated garlic powder • 2 tsp dry oregano
