    During a scheduled dry-

    docking in Gdansk,

    Poland, the propeller

of a 121 me tre ro-ro ves sel t hat

    had suffered severe cavitation

    damage was given a protec-

tive Ecospeed coating after it s

    blades had been cropped.

To save the owner the cost and time of

having a new propeller designed and

manufactured, it was decided to resto-

re the propellers efficiency as close to

its optimum level as possible. This

was achieved by first cropping the

four blades, followed by a treatment

    with the unique Ecospeed coating.

The cavitation pitting that was pre-

sent across the blades was filled with

Ecospeed to regain a smooth surface.

Once this was done the required twolayers of the coating were applied,

    effectively providing the propeller

    with an impenetrable protective layer

    from then onwards. The coatings

    flexibility enables absorption of the

forces that are produced by cavitati-

    on, preventing similar damage from

    reoccurring.

Other ships that had their propellers

recently coated with Ecospeed includetwo 230 metre car carriers, a 175

    metre reefer ship, the icebreaker

Ymer and the fourth in a series

    of passenger ferries owned by

    Scandlines.

One of the other passenger ferries

was inspected during its yearly dry-

dock visit after one year of sailing

with Ecospeed. The coating wasfound to be still in excellent condi-

tion with no need for recoating.

With the right planning, grit blasting

and application of the two required

layers can be performed in just one

day, making the speed of application

    of Ecospeed a further advantage.

As demonstrated in the case story

above, Ecospeed can be applied overexisting cavitation pitting without

preliminary repairs and will serve as

a filler. This keeps the efficiency of

    propellers at an optimum level

between scheduled drydockings, preventing unexpected work on the

propeller to be carried out in this

    period.

Ecospeed ship hull perfor-mance technology laststhe lifetime of the vessel.

    The need for full repaints

    during future drydockings iseliminated.

    An impermeable and extremely

    tough coating is combined with

    an underwater cleaning system

    keeping the hull roughness at

an optimum level and resultingin a major saving in fuel.

    Its surface texture will improve

    over time with regular inwa-

    ter hull maintenance. Ecospeed

    is a 100% non-toxic techno-

logy and is guaranteed for10 years.
